Harry Shannon, who wrote as "The Rambler" for the Washington Sunday Star in the early twentieth century. Shannon's weekly columns, appearing between 1900 and 1927, documented the landscapes, buildings, and people of Virginia during his travels through the state. While some of his images accompanied the original newspaper pieces and a portion have surfaced in reprints over the decades, a substantial number of the plates gathered here had remained unpublished, in several cases unseen even by Shannon himself.
