Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Prior to World War Two, Wing Commander Guy Gibson joined the Royal Air Force. In 1944, he wrote down his experience of serving in the RAF. Aged just 25, Gibson had completed two full tours, each of 30 operations, with Bomber Command, and had led the now-famous Dam Busters raid against the dams of the Ruhr Valley in May 1943. He died aged 26 in 1944, when his Mosquito crashed near Steenbergen in the Netherlands. Gibson's story is an incredible one. He struggled daily to work the Handley Page Hampden, and then the Avro Manchester, flying both into enemy airspace with great difficulty. He goes into detail on this, describing the troubles facing him, and how he managed to overcome them. He also addresses the rapid professionalisation of the Bomber Command. At the start of the war, they seemed ill-equipped and unprepared to confront Germany, but they grew in confidence and stature, to represent one of the defining units of the Second World War. Gibson recounts this change. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. In August 1914, Von Hindenburg defeated the Russians at Tannenburg, overcoming a much larger enemy force. He was promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the German armies in the East, where he achieved a number of significant victories, most notably at the Battle of the Masurian Lakes. Much of this success has been put down to the brilliance of his chief-of-staff, Erich Ludendorff, who served as von Hindenburg's deputy throughout the war. These victories on the Eastern Front caused von Hindenburg to become a cult figure in Germany, where he was seen as the perfect embodiment of Germanic strength and moral decency. Wooden statues of von Hindenburg were built all over Germany, onto which people nailed money and cheques for war bonds. "The Great War" gives unparalleled insight into German military thinking during World War I, and offers the rare perspective of one of Germany's most senior military figures. This is the first edition of von Hindenburg's memoirs in more than fifty years. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. It shows the variety and depth of the men sent into harms way during World War II, something emphasised by the population of Stalag Luft III. Most of the Allied POWs were flyers, with all the technical, tactical and planning skills that profession requires. Such men are independent thinkers, craving open air and wide-open spaces, which meant than an obsession with escape was almost inevitable'- John D Gresham Between dusk and dawn on the night of March 24th-25th 1944, a small army of Allied soldiers crawled through tunnels in Germany in a covert operation the likes of which the Third Reich had never seen before. The prison break from Stalag Luft III in eastern Germany was the largest of its kind in World War II. Seventy nine Allied soldiers and airmen made it outside the wire - but only three made it outside Nazi Germany. Fifty were executed by the Gestapo. Jonathan Vance tells the incredible story that was made famous by the 1963 film, The Great Escape. The escape is a classic tale of prisoner and their wardens in a battle of wits and wills. The brilliantly conceived escape plan is overshadowed only by the colourful, daring (and sometimes very funny) crew who executed it - literally under the noses of German guards. From their first days in Stalag Luft III and the forming of bonds key to such exploits, to the tunnel building, amazing escape and eventual capture, Vance's history is a vivid, compelling look at one of the greatest 'exfiltration' missions of all time. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. This provocative alternate history looks at the Second World War from a new angle - what might have happened had the Germans taken Moscow in 1941. Based on authentic history and real possibilities, this unique speculative narrative plays out the dramatic consequences of opportunities taken and examines the grotesque possibilities of a Third Reich triumphant. On 30 September 1941, the Germans fight their way into the ruins of Moscow and the Soviet Union collapses. Although Russian resistance continues, German ambition multiplies after this signal victory and offensives are launched in Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Hitler's armies, assured of victory, make their leader's dreams reality and Allied hopes of victory seem to be almost hopelessly doomed. David Downing's writing is fluid and eminently believable as he blends actual history with the stimulating world of alternate events. The Moscow Option is a chilling reminder that history might easily have been very different. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Real history with the narrative grip of the best fiction. The best background to the sea fiction of C S Forester, Alexander Kent and Patrick O'Brian. Specially commissioned cover painting by Geoff Hunt. This is a gripping account of how the men of Nelson's navy lived and fought, written by the author of the ever-popular Ramage sagas. Based on years of research and reading in contemporary sources, it brings alive, in a way that few other books have done, naval shipboard life during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Every aspect is covered: the Navy's ships and their weapons, the daily routine of officers and men, the harsh discipline and punishments, the Press Gang, the threat of disease and how the Navy sought to combat it, and the ever-present lure of prize money. It describes how the men who won the battles of Cape St Vincent, the Nile and Trafalgar lived their daily lives, and how in spite of all the hardships they faced, they dominated the seas so completely throughout the Napoleonic Wars. This highly readable book will delight and enlighten all those who seek a vivid yet accurate account of life in the Navy of Nelson's era. DUDLEY POPE served in the Second World War as a cadet in the Merchant Navy until wounded in the Battle of the Atlantic. During seventeen years in Fleet Street as a naval correspondent he began his career as an historian and in 1959 he resigned to become a full-time writer. In 1965 he set sail for the West Indies, where he and his wife lived and cruised until his death in 1997. His other non-fiction books include the best-selling England Expects and Flag 4, both available from Chatham. SEVENTH REPRINT OF THIS EDITION. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. A visceral account from contemporaneous diaries of a soldier who frequently came close to death but somehow survived. Following his Abitur (A-levels) in 1940, Rehfeldt volunteered for the Panzer Arm but was trained on the heavy mortar and heavy MG with Grossdeutschland Division. He was on the Front from 1941 fighting for the city of Tula, south of Moscow. Battling in freezing conditions, at its lowest -52?, the descriptions of the privations are vivid and terrifying. With no winter clothes they resorted to using those taken from Soviet corpses. In 1942, fighting near Oriel, however, his batallion suffered heavy losses and was disbanded. Ill with frostbitten legs, Rehfeldt was treated in hospital and once recovered was dispatched to the Front. Following various battles (Werch, Bolchov) his batallion again suffered heavy losses and it merged. In agony from severe frostbite to his legs, Rehfeldt defied the odds and astonished his surgeon when he walked again. He was promoted from Gunner to Trained Private Soldier in 1942, and to Corporal for bravery in the field in 1943. He was awarded numerous honours including the Wound Badge and the Infantry Assault Badge. On 3 May 1945 he was captured by US Forces and held as PoW for one month in a camp at Waschow before internment in Holstein from where he was released in July 1945 after agreeing to work on the land. In December 1945 he began studying veterinary medicine: his future career. This astonishing account of a man who kept bouncing back from near death is a testament to the author's determination and sheer strength of spirit. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. This is the definitive biography of one of the most controversial figures of World War II. Sir Arthur Harris remains the target of criticism and vilification by many, while others believe the contribution he and his men made to victory is grossly undervalued. Henry Probert's critical but sympathetic new account draws on recent research and, for this first time, all of Harris's own extensive papers, to give outstanding insight into a man who combined leadership, professionalism and decisiveness with kindness, humour and generosity. Probert examines Harris's life from youth in Rhodesia to fighting in World War I, the interwar years, his two families and his post-war years in South Africa and England. He reveals and analyses how Harris did his job in RAF Bomber Command during World War II, his leadership of his men in the face of appalling casualties, his disagreements with higher authority, his dealings with Churchill, his close links with the Americans, his role in directing the bombing raids against Germany, most notably at Dresden, and the way he was treated afterwards. Bomber Harris provides the most complete and rounded picture of one of the great high commanders of modern times and an outstanding military personality of World War II. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. For the majority, sea travel was a novel and exotic experience, and a surprising number of 'Great Britain's' voyagers recorded their impressions in letters home or journals passed on to their descendants. Every aspect of this curious world was found worthy of comment, from the food to the onboard entertainment, not to mention the dubious, colourful and eccentric characters encountered. From this rich variey, Nick Fogg has fashioned a vivid depiction of shipboard life at a crossroads in history when the miseries of passaging under sail were beginning to give way to the kind of luxuries modern travellers take for granted. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Few episodes of British military history have been as dramatic as Sir John Moore's retreat to Corunna. March of Death is the full story of that adventure and a gripping tale of a fight for survival amidst the Spanish snow. In the bitter winter of 1808, a small British force found itself outnumbered and outmanouevered by a French army led by none other than the emperor Napoleon. Faced with crushing defeat, the British, commanded by Sir John Moore, turned and began a legendary march through the snow and ice of northern Spain to freedom and escape. Napoleon, swearing that he would drive the British leopard into the sea, pursued and an epic was born. March of Death is the story of the terrible retreat through the eyes of those who were there and who survived. Relating the horrific ordeal through excerpts from survivors' diaries, letters, memoirs and reports, this fascinating narrative brings to life the heroism and glory of a real fight for survival. Christopher Summerville paints a vivid history of the retreat, and of the heroic climax in which the British turn and inflict a defeat on the pursuing French. It was a defeat Sir John Moore was not to see completed, for he fell mortally wounded in the battle. Summerville also shows that a remarkable number of British soldiers lost their lives not at the hands of the French, but by succumbing to typhus. British hospitals, even then suffering from a lack of bed spaces, were woefully ill-prepared to treat the returning men. Christopher Summerville is an expert on Napoleonic history and the editor of The Exploits of Baron de Marbot and Segur's Napoleon's Expedition to Russia. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Frederick Marryat was a novelist, for both adults and children, between Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. He was also known as Captain Marryat, naval hero of the great war with France, who went on to become a celebrated figure in Dickens' literary circle. A man about town, a journalist, duellist, courtier, and an acutely observant traveller in the United States, he finally settled as a farmer deep in the English countryside. This is his biography. Marryat's life was as extravagant as anything in his books. As a boy he went to sea with Lord Cochrane, a dashing frigate captain, and saw action in several engagements. He fought the Americans in 1812, but was later lionised by them as a famous author - only to be reviled for helping to suppress a French-Canadian rebellion. A man of charm and wit, Marryat also showed a hot, violent temper and was fined for brawling in London streets. Spending his way through three inherited fortunes, making and wasting huge earnings from his writing, he finally gambled away his smart London house to become a farmer in Norfolk. There, he planned house parties for his famous friends, but what transpired in that remote corner of England forms an appropriate but poignant surprise conclusion. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Snipers at War is a detailed history and analysis of the equipment, tactics and personalities of the sniping world , from the pursuit of accuracy to the latest electronic aids to observation and ranging. Technology and marksmanship from the Crimean War to the present day is examined in detail. The role of the sniper was largely ignored until the Winter War of 1939-40 between Finland and the USSR showed what could be achieved by specialist marksmen: Finn Simo H yh amassed 505 kills in less than a hundred days, a lesson learned by the Red Army to its cost. By the Germans invasion of 1941 the Russians were prepared: when the war ended, in addition to men such as Vasiliy Zaytsev, a Stalingrad hero with 242 accredited kills, the USSR had trained more than 2000 women as snipers. After 1945, the sniper s reputation declined again. However, the Vietnam War, seemingly unending Middle Eastern conflict, internal strife in Sri Lanka, and ever-present urban threats have given new impetus not only to sniping but also to the development of new and more effective weaponry. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. In the age of sail, the boats were an essential part of any ship's equipment. They moved stores, towed the ship in calms and in confined water, and, for warships, were an extention of their armament. Over the centuries there were almost countless sizes, hull forms and rigs employed, so the exact details have always been a problem to modelmakers, marine artists and even those building replicas. This book, originally published by the National Maritime Museum in 1974, is a study of the whole history of this neglected topic. Now revised, expanded and much more thoroughly illustrated, it covers the boat 'establishments' (the sixes and types of boat formally allocated), the methods of hoisting and stowing them aboard ship, the design and construction of the boats themselves, their fittings, rigs and armament - guns, howitzers, and even Congreve rockets. Although primarily devoted to the age of sail, coverage extends to the steam boats of the late nineteenth century. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Unlike most of the sailors' memoirs of the Nelsonic navy, gardner's was not written for publication: it was purely intended for the entertainment of his family and friends, and did not see publication until long after his death. As a result potential problems of libel did not constrain him to bite his tongue when it came to opinions of individuals, high and low, in the naval service. He himself saw plenty of action and served in some famous ships, including the "Victory", but what interests him most is his mess-mates and their eccentricities. The pranks, scams and amusements that broke up the claustrophobic life of a warship's crew form a large part of his narrative, and some of his stories are almost surreal in their detail - a tale of the mayhem caused aboard his ship by 86 huge Newfoundland dogs is only one example. Somehow Gardner's vision of the bawdy, drunken and often comic-opera life of the Navy rings more true than the usual Victorian image of the heroic Wooden Walls of Old England. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Offers a unique insight into Lawrence of Arabia through his formative writings With material previously available only in limited editions Compiled by the noted Lawrence scholar Malcolm Brown 'These wartime reports provide illuminating insights into aspects of Lawrence's enigmatic character which would later be suppressed as his darker side emerged in Seven Pillars of Wisdom' - Simon Courtauld in the Evening Standard The writings presented in this volume shed tremendous light, both on the character of T. E. Lawrence and the current situation in the Middle East. Despite being written more than seventy years ago, the thoughts of Lawrence of Arabia remain remarkably pertinent. This collection includes Lawrence's wartime reports from the desert, along with later writings in which Lawrence attempts to cope with the consequences of war in the circumstances of peace. Many of the pieces have previously only been issued in limited editions. T. E. Lawrence in War and Peace is an invaluable companion volume to Seven Pillars of Wisdom, which offers a self-portrait of its author long before he became an international celebrity. It gives us the man before the myth, writing fluently, vividly and with a total command of his subject. This edition has been compiled by the acclaimed writer Malcolm Brown, who is the co-author of A Touch of Genius: The Life of T. E. Lawrence and edited The Letters of T. E. Lawrence. The publication coincides with the 70th anniversary of Lawrence's death in May 1935 and an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, which Brown curates. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. A country of fiddlers and poets, whores and scoundrels"--Nelson's famous description of Naples--was a world eagerly embraced by a young Irish doctor called James Lowry who went to sea, apparently, for the sheer sense of adventure and a desire for exotic travel. Sent to join Nelson's victorious fleet after the Battle of the Nile, he experienced more naval action and saw more foreign climes than he had anticipated. What really engaged his interest (and enthusiasm) was the relaxed sexual mores of Italian society. With no thought that his memoirs would be published, he recounted his adventures in rather more detail than might be thought proper. This fascinating account lay hidden in the hands of Lowry's family for two hundred years before its first publication in 2006. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: "Presents first-hand, eye-witness accounts and reminiscences by participants in the Anglo-Zulu War. Many officers who fought in the war wrote memoirs later in their careers and these books have long been sought after as first-hand source material. Most have been out of print for many years and are collectors' items, and yet all are of vital importance to the understanding of this fascinating conflict. Now, Ian Knight, author of Brave Men's Blood, the most comprehensive account of the war yet published, has carefully selected the most interesting and important Zulu war reminiscences in one volume. The extracts range from the recollections of commanding officers life Colonel Evelyn Wood, to leading officers, such as Hamilton-Browne, Harrison, Bengough, Greenfell, and less figures such as Smith-Dorrien, who nonetheless had fascinating stories to tell. There are accounts of great battles, such as Isandwana, Hlobane, Khambula and Ulundi, all vividly evoked by eye-witnesses, as well as minor incidents and scares, and the drudgery of day to day campaigning: even a little of the humor of camp life is included. In each case Ian Knight has linked and evaluated the accounts, and provided a brief outline of each soldier's career and his role in the war. The result is a vivid picture of the Anglo-Zulu war as it seemed to the men who fought it, an entertaining read for the general reader and an essential reference for serious students of the war."
