The booklet contains many names: many early settlers, first merchants, government officials, lawyers, early mill owners, justices, and doctors. Besides the names mentioned in the first part of the booklet, there are some fairly lengthy biographies, which generally include ancestors, previous residences, children, in-laws, affiliations, war records and military encounters, and business activities. In the course of this they often shed light on the early businesses, professions and institutions in the county. The biographies include: J.H. Cumings, J.A. Dement, Josephus Finley, D.D. Hare, W.C. Houston, James A. Jones, L.L. Melton, W.T. Mingle, and J.G. Moore. Brief excerpts from Counties of Tennessee by Austin P. Foster, and Tennessee, a Guide to the State, compiled and written by the Federal Writer's Project of the WPA in 1939, are included. There are a few illustrations, but the quality of these is only fair.

The next several paragraphs recall early settlers, including Col. J. Purdy, James Thomas, James Clifford, Jere Hendrick, Micajah Jones, Stephen Beaver, Samuel and James Neill, and many others. Communities discussed include Henderson (county seat), Montezuma, Mifflin, and Jacks Creek. Other subjects include the organiation of the county, county schools with 50 day sessions, West Tennessee Christian College, Henderson Male and Female College, and various churches. The second paragraph goes into the early settlers, beginning with Col. Joseph Hardin in 1815. The 45-page b…ooklet has the print enlarged for easier reading. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. The murder or suicide of Meriwether Lewis (famous as one of the leaders of the Lewis and Clark Expedition) at a tavern here not only put Lewis County on the map, so to speak, but provided a name for it. Today there is a National Monument at the site of the famous explorer's death. Other items in the history of this county include a description of the land, names of early settlers and early county officials, and a little on the various communities of Newburg, Hohenwald, Voorhies, Carpenter's Station, and Palestine. We've added some other references to clarify (or add more confusion) to the death of Lewis. There are only three biographies for Lewis County: Z.V. Dabbs, Samuel L. Massey, and James W. Stockard. Hickman County was named for a surveyor who was killed by Indians while surveying the area. The history portion for this county includes names of early settlers, description of the land, early mills and other enterprises, controversy over the selection of a county seat, the court house, county officials, participants in the war with Mexico, the Civil War, the town of Centreville, with names of businesses, Pine Wood, Schools, and Churches. The 55-page book has the print enlarged for easier reading.… A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. The first 19 pages are devoted to the history of the county. Included are a physical description of the county, names of many early settlers, early merchants and industries, creation of the county, justices, first courthouse, county court clerks, masonic lodge, newspaper, divided Civil War sentiment, schools and churches, etc. Manchester is the county seat. Tullahoma is located here, as are several small communities: Beech Grove, Hillsboro, Summittville, and Noah. Besides the names mentioned in the first part of the booklet, there are biographies of many county residents of yesteryear. Most are fairly lengthy, and include ancestors, previous residences, children, in-laws, affiliations, war records, and business activities.
