Paperback. Condición: New. In the years leading up to the American Revolution, tensions were high, but not everyone felt the same effects of British oppression. Connecticut newspapers took up the mantle to not just report the injustices, but actively convince and insight their readers to stand up and rebel. Charles Cutter lays bare the influence of the press to start the war that gave birth to our nation as we know it.As one phase of the Bicentennial observation, The American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of Connecticut has authorized scholars in a wide range of study to write a series of monographs on the broadly defined Revolutionary Era of 1763 to 1787. These monographs [appeared] yearly beginning in 1973 through 1980. Emphasis is placed upon the birth of the nation, rather than on the winning of independence on the field of battle.…

Paperback. Condición: New. America won the Revolutionary War against all odds. They were outnumbered and outmaneuvered for the majority of the war, but a few strategic wins turned the tables. One such strategic encounter occurred after the war was won-in Danbury, the British planned a massive raid on Danbury's magazine of stores in April 1777. Robert McDevitt outlines the leading causes and comprehensive history of this tumultuous time from a British viewpoint. As one phase of the Bicentennial observation, The American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of Connecticut has authorized scholars in a wide range of study to write a series of monographs on the broadly defined Revolutionary Era of 1763 to 1787. Paperback. Condición: New. Black soldiers of the American Revolution? Not a credible statement in light of what most Americans have read about the Revolutionary War. We have heard of Casimir Pulaski the Pole, Marquis de Lafayette the Frenchman, and Baron von Steuben the German, but not black participants. Yet, close to 5,000 blacks did ?ght in the war against the British, and others served as laborers, spies, and guides. The absence in our general histories of their activities in this struggle lies with the misconception that the Afro-American has contributed little or nothing towards the creation of the United States and its subsequent development, for in most studies made of the Revolutionary era, there has been little impulse to search for evidences of service by blacks, except perhaps to note the existence of slavery. Histories of Connecticut have generally treated the Revolution in a similar manner. Few of them have acknowledged the contributions of the black soldier. This is partially true because the story of Connecticut's black participant is one about the regular foot soldier in the Revolution and not about the men who led him into battle or the political leaders who guided the nation. And it is these men who most often fill the pages of our history books. As one phase of the Bicentennial observation, The American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of Connecticut has authorized scholars in a wide range of study to write a series of monographs on the broadly defined Revolutionary Era of 1763 to 1787. These monographs [appeared] yearly beginning in 1973 through 1980. Emphasis is placed upon the birth of the nation, rather than on the winning of independence on the field of battle.…

Paperback. Condición: New. From the Preface: In the 1700s, American colleges like Yale were hotbeds of intellectual activity that lead the country to revolution. According to author Louis Tucker, this volume is a study that "seeks to assess the role of Yale College in the American Revolution. It especially focuses on the part played by Yale in the development of the spirit of rebellion in Connecticut.A number of Yale trained Whigs carried the torch of rebellion into other colonies and assumed roles of leadership when the political crisis deepened." Paperback. Condición: New. Hiking and backpacking are unique "sports" which require a unique blend of strength, conditioning, and athleticism unlike most recreational physical endeavors. People need strength to climb steep ascents, conditioning to endure long mile days, and athleticism to handle their own body on rugged terrain. Now add on the harsh, rugged conditions of the mountains and it can be a recipe for struggle - but it doesn't have to be. Hike Strong: The Complete Guide to Building Trail Strength, Endurance, and Confidence for Hiking and Backpacking will help alleviate the "fitness anxiety" that some can experience when thinking about tackling the mountain they've always wanted to climb. Written by a licensed hiking guide and professional strength and conditioning coach, this book will be a transformative fitness guide designed for outdoor enthusiasts who want to confidently enjoy the trail. This guide will offer a practical, step-by-step approach to preparing readers both physically and mentally so they can arrive at any trailhead fully confident in their abilities. The tools and programming they'll learn will help them feel strong and perform well from trailhead to summit and back again. In Hike Strong, readers will find training programs that combine strength-building, conditioning, balance, and mobility tailored specifically to the demands of hiking and backpacking. They'll also learn the "why" and "how" behind these programs. Conventional wisdom has told people to "just go running" to get in shape for hiking. This guide takes a vastly different approach and instead teaches that strength training is the way to properly prepare oneself for the demands of the backcountry. The author's training modalities have been proven over and over by the successful results his clients have experienced in the mountains following his training program. This book will inspire readers to be excited to embark on new adventures, knowing they have the tools to make every step of the adventure a rewarding one.…

Hardback. Condición: New. Dawn moves through three phases, each one represented by different bird species awakening with their unique songs. Robins warble first during Astronomical Dawn when the sun is still 18% below the horizon. This is followed by Nautical Dawn (12% below the horizon), heralded by the song of a chickadee. Finally, a towhee serenades the arrival of Civic Dawn, when the sun is 6% below the horizon and objects can be clearly seen, and on it goes as other birds join the chorus. This poetic book about songbirds describes the unique voices of thirteen common species, and helpful back matter provides further information on how and why birds sing the way they do. Paperback. Condición: New. The reason why protests have caused maximum pain for minimum gain is that they have done everything right. Well-developed consensus practices from activists have been put into practice in highly coordinated fashion internationally: keep messaging simple, restrict communications to a few media-trained representatives, maximize social media spread, try to provoke reactions, do not compromise, and do not legitimize the opposition by speaking to them. As a result, most observers not already sympathetic to the cause have come away with a picture of students as obstinate, naïve, and inclined to violence.Daoist philosophy holds a set of principles that are completely opposite to the normal modes of social activism. It opposes conflict, striving, standard-setting, clever techniques, and any kind of trust in language. Instead, it promotes grounding oneself in the reality of the world, looking to flow in natural directions, disengagement from conflict, and patience. This may all sound very mystical and not of much use to protests; but viewed in another light, it results in some common-sense conclusions. Would you be more easily persuaded by someone who sat down with you for a conversation, or by someone who yelled angry accusations at you from across a barricade? The Activist tries to bring out the "common-sense" aspect of Daoist ideals to advocate for a new kind of social activism. It critiques common modes of social and political activism and proposes new modes of activism that might be more effective in promoting positive change in the world.…

Paperback. Condición: New. Credited with vividly recreating an early chapter in American history with his first novel, A Matter of Honor, William C. Hammond continues the seafaring adventures of the prominent Massachusetts family in this second novel. Set in the years following the American Revolution, it offers an exciting look at the young republic at a time when America remained a weak nation with no Navy to protect its prosperous merchant fleet from Barbary pirates or nations intent on crippling its shipping. The novel opens with the capture of the Cutler merchant brig Eagle by Barbary pirates. Young Caleb Cutler and his shipmates are taken as prisoners to Algiers, and his brother Richard, the novel's main protagonist, is sent to North Africa to pay ransoms demanded by the Dey of Algiers. But Richard learns of the Dey's intent to reject the ransom, as well as threats from the British and French, and fights a fierce battle in the Mediterranean with two Arab xebecs. Victorious at sea, Richard travels to Paris to report to John Paul Jones, his former naval commander who now serves as American emissary to the Barbary States. The author's careful historical research and thorough knowledge of sailing and the ways of the sea bring an authenticity to the novel without detracting from the entertaining storyline. The book includes a romantic interest involving a desperate race to save the beautiful Anne Marie Helvétian and her two daughters from the guillotine. Hammond's focus on the American perspective of the Age of Fighting Sail in the years following the American Revolution adds a fresh dimension to historical novels of the period.…

Paperback. Condición: New. The Power and the Glory is the third novel in the historical, nautical fiction series from William C. Hammond. It follows in the wake of A Matter of Honor and For Love of Country, and features the adventures of the seafaring Cutler family of Hingham, Massachusetts and an ever expanding cast of characters. Set during the Quasi-War against the French Republic during the late 1790's, The Power and the Glory offers the reader a stirring and authentic look at the birth of the modern United States Navy during the Age of Fighting Sail. Whether confronting French pirates off the coast of Nantucket or heavily armed French frigates in the Caribbean, Capt. Thomas Truxtun, Capt. Silas Talbot, Lt. Richard Cutler and other early naval heroes --most real, some fictional -- personify the best of American honor and courage. Beyond electrifying sea battles and the challenge to French colonial rule in Haiti and in the French West Indies, The Power and the Glory provides intriguing glimpses into everyday life of the era, be they in the bedroom of the Cutler clapboard home in Hingham, on the island of Barbados where the Cutlers' own a sugar cane plantation and run a far-reaching commercial enterprise, or aboard Adm. Sir Hyde Parker's flagship in Port Royal, Jamaica. And at the center of all the excitement, passion and intrigue are two of the finest "super frigates" ever constructed: USS Constellation and her sister ship, USS Constitution. As with all books in the series, the author's careful research and attention to detail, coupled with his thorough knowledge of sailing and the ways of the sea, bring history alive in a refreshing and entertaining fashio.…
