It was first printed in 1950 by Cambridge University Press in a limited edition, and reprinted with corrections in 1966. Its point of departure is the role of printing as a vehicle for the transmission of knowledge, art, and humanist ideas. Geoffrey Dudley Hobson traces the emergence of the richly interlaced fanfare style in Paris during the later sixteenth century, its relationship to earlier French decorative binding, its influence on the seventeenth-century pointillé style, and its dissemination through French and Italian workshops.
