Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fair. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No Dust Jacket as Issued. REF 039981 This leather bound collection of letters "by WRITERS eminent for Perspicuity and Elegance of Expression" is a rough ex library copy but a scarce early printing by the press Charles R. and George Webster, noted Albany printers, who also o…wned a bookstore "in the White House, corner of State and Pearl Streets". The original calf leather binding is tight albeit worn through at corners, particularly the front bottom. The library that owned this has written the title and call number in white ink on the spine. Endpapers have been amateurishly replaced and reglued and thus the left margin of the title page is glued to the front endpaper for about an inch and a few letters obscured. Library stamps on the endpapers and inside boards. Portions of page 29/30 , 75/76, and 237 /238 are missing. Page 119/120 is totally missing.

Rare and desirable. One of the founding fathers of the United States, Thomas Paine authored two of the most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution, which ultimately inspired the 1776 Declaration of Independence. Small quarto (5" x 7-3/4") bound in leather; xii, 60, [2], 186, 41, [3], vi-vii, [2], 10-70, [2], 24, [2], 124, [2] pages. Contains 1. Common Sense; Addressed to the Inhabitants of America (Albany: Re-Printed, by Charles R. and George Webster, 1791); 2. The Crisis: In Thirteen Numbers. The first collected American edition of "The Crisis," the first time individual numbers were printed together in America. "Crisis" as issued with page 180 mis-numbered 178 and Numbers 10 and 12 omitted, as the printers were unable to obtain a copy of the text. Of the articles in "The Crisis," only 5 were issued in pamphlet form, with the others appearing only in newspapers. After publishing articles numbered I-IX, Paine did not assign number X, though in its place he published "The Crisis Extraordinary", which was followed by number XI. He skipped number XII and called the final article in the series "The Last Crisis, Number XIII." Although 9 parts are listed on the general title page, 4 of them--the Letters in Section 5 above--are included as one part. HOWES P-34 states that the First Edition consists of 7 separately paginated sections totaling 517 pages, and the Second Edition consists of 9 sections totaling 623 pages. James Parker (1714 1770) was a Colonial printer and publisher in British America during the reign of George II of Great Britain. Parker was born in 1714 at Woodbridge Township, New Jersey, the son of Samuel Parker and Jana Inglis Parker. Parker had a brother named Samuel, who died at 20 and was buried at the First Presbyterian Churchyard in Woodbridge Township. Parker had a daughter Jane Ballareau Parker who married Gunning Bedford Jr., a Founding Father of the United States and a signer of the United States Constitution. A popular American legal manual issued by different printers and publishers largely based on English sources, primarily Burn. The first edition by Parker appeared in 1764. The 1792 Philadelphia edition was the last to include the Ten Pound Act and the sections on military and excise law, which were omitted from subsequent editions after the Whiskey Rebellion in Western Pennsylvania. The preface says this edition, though useful throughout the country, is especially suited for justices in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Albany New York imprint. Añadir al carritoSoft cover. 1st Edition. 8vo., (6 ½ x 4 ¼ inches). Original publisher's printed paper self-wrappers stabbed and sewn as issued (Lacks final leaf; chipping to last page, evenly browned throughout). First edition. Contains Washington's farewell address ("America's Legacy"), delivered September 17, 1796. "All the calculations, astr…onomical notes, and weather predictions on the calendar pages are identical with those in Hutchins improved for 1797. The notes also duplicate almost entirely those in Greenleaf's New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey almanack for this year. Both of these almanacs were calculated by Andrew Beers, though without his name on the title pages. The notes are identical also with those in his Beers's almanac and ephemeris for 1797, published at Hartford, and in Stoddard's diary or The Columbian almanack for 1797 (Hudson, N.Y.), also issued with Beers's name as calculator. "Evans attributes this issue of Webster's calendar, as he does nearly all almanacs published under the Bickerstaff pseudonym, to Benjamin West. The attribution is traditional, but the majority of these almanacs can be shown to have been the work of other calculators" (Yale online catalogue).
