A shortage of small change resulted in many shopkeepers and tradespeople issuing their own tokens between 1648 and 1672. These provide a tangible record of a group of people who otherwise do not appear in the history books. One hundred such issues can be attributed to the county of Bedfordshire. This new book lists not only many unrecorded varieties but also opens a window on the lives and day-to-day activities of the token issuers themselves. Extensive use of contemporary records sheds light on the trades, wealth, status, religion and beliefs and final wishes of the token issuers. The photographs, along with an analysis of some of the design features of the tokens, allow comparison with the issues of other counties. This book was five years in the writing and was our response to the frustration we felt at the varieties not properly described, or not illustrated in the pages of The Nineteenth Century Token Coinage of Great Britain, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man by W J Davis. It was inspired by an American numismatist Colonel Axel Wahlstedt, who wrote: 'It is not sufficient that a coin-catalogue is chronologically arranged, so that the different coin-types follow each other in the same way and in the same succession. A scientific coin-catalogue must also give an account of the economic conditions that form the background to the activity of the monetary workshops. Thus placed in their natural environment the coins can contribute to make a picture of the pulsating life they once assisted to maintain' in Transactions of the International Numismatic Congress 1936.

This work was begun because there were no books on the subject available when we needed it in the 1970s when we began to collect con-weights. Little was known about them, so we had to develop a system of cataloguing the weights that we collected. It was some time before we realised that we realised that weights were mostly issued or sold as sets, or part sets. The book was more than a decade in the writing. The list of collectors, dealers, institutions and museums we had to acknowledge was more than a hundred, including the Bank of England, encompassing almost everybody who is anybody in the Museum and collecting world.
