Añadir al carritoFull-Leather. Condición: Good. Reprint. Later edition from 1771 in five volumes but missing volume V: I (311pp including essay), II (300pp), III (340pp) and IV (335pp). Contemporary full leather binding. The title and volume number panels have been lost on all the volumes. The volume numbers are stamped on the spines. The spines… have chipping at the tops and bottoms with some vertical cracking to the surfaces. There is also little cracking to the edges - the binding is firm with the exception of volume I where there is a gap along the top half. The corners are bumped with some rubbing and fraying and there is some light surface wear to the front and rear panels. Name of a previous owner in ink to the title pages - Lady Wale of Shelford near Cambridge - and there is the name of an earlier owner above this. Browning and some spotting to the endpapers. Volume I has a little more wear to the spine than the other volumes and there is a little edge creasing and tearing to the fold-out illustration of Troy. Volume II has two pages which protrude slightly with some edge wear. Volume III has quite heavy staining over half the surface of the front panel and a large stain which affects the top half of the pages through to page 30 and then diminishes gradually through to page 150 with these pages only a little affected. There is also a little creasing to the top corners of pages 77 to 86. Volume IV has an eight page section of the text which protrudes a little with some edge creasing. There is light browning to the pages with some spots and marks in places and in particular to the pages at the front of the books but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked. Heavy item due to it being four volumes so there will be an additional postage charge for overseas orders.

Añadir al carritoFirst edition. [4], cxiv, 153pp, [1]. Contemporary blind-stamped calf, contrasting gilt-tooled red morocco lettering-piece. Rubbed and marked, with surface wear to boards, spine slightly pitted. Very minimal touch of spotting to endpapers, otherwise internally clean and crisp. The first edition of a report recounting disputed pa…rliamentary elections under James I by Sir John Glanville the younger (1586 â" 1661), English politician and Speaker of the House of Commons during the Short Parliament. A staunch Royalist during the Civil War, Glanville would be imprisoned in the Tower of London by Parliament for three years from 1645 to 1648. The extensive preface establishes the motive for the volume's eighteenth-century publication: 'in the Editor's judgement, these sheets contained much useful and general information on the subject of Controverted Elections, and that there never was such a time, in his opinion, when such kind of knowledge and information, was more likely to become of general utility to the public, than the present.' In the tumultuous political climate of 1775, amidst the outbreak of the American war, it seemed likely that Glanville's insight could prove valuable. ESTC T99928. Size: 8vo.

Añadir al carritoFirst edition. [2], xxxiii, [3], 242, xii, 259pp, [1]. With an engraved folding map 'of Europe for the Illustration of King Aelfred's Anglo-Saxon translation of Orosius', without half-title. Contemporary gilt-ruled calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Rubbed to extremities, chipped to head and foot of the (slightly dis…coloured) spine with some starting to joints; nevertheless a strongly-bound copy, with small diamond-shaped shelfmark label to foot of spine. With the bookplate of 'Jn. Free. Milwd. Dovaston, the Nursery Library' to FEP, and the characteristic inscription and price note of 'Jn: Dovaston's, 1799. Pret. 0. 7. 0.' to head of title. Dovaston has also inscribed 'The Saxon alphabet, for the better reading of the following book' to the verso of the blank fly-leave opposite the title, and added a handful of short annotations to the margins of the text. A choice copy of the first English translation of Alfred the Great's version of the fourth century historian Orosius' Historiæ adversum paganos, made by English lawyer and antiquary Daines Barrington (1727/8-1800), presented following a reprinting of the Saxon. According to the Bowyer ledgers, this - the sole edition - comprised 250 copies. Pleasingly, this copy has been improved by an early owner; the Shropshire nurseryman and antiquarian John Dovaston (1740-1808). The Dovaston library, continued by Dovaston's son (poet, ornithologist and friend of Bewick, and whose bookplate adorns this copy) was dispersed by Hall, Wateridge & Owen in Shrewsbury, 1910. This narrative supplied his grandson, Lord Byron, the poet, with many particulars for the shipwreck in Canto II of Don Juan. Byron, known as "foul weather Jack" commanded a voyage round the world in the Dolphin from 1764-1766. He was later governor of Newfoundland and became an admiral in 1775." (HILL).
