Integrating collage, impasto and oil stick, the recent paintings contain a zigzag retrospective of Prince's earlier work, intercut with appropriated photographic images. Repeating motifs include close-up shots of eyeballs, sutured skin and mouths with a cigarette dangling between the teeth, which he has scrawled over and around with swaths of oily pigment and thick, impasto brushstrokes, creating a collage of found imagery and original mark-making. The book also highlights recent sculptures comprised of shredded denim and card tires. Published by Fulton Ryder, Prince's private imprint, Folksongs continues a series of artist's books on both retrospective and new artworks. At first glance, the New Paintings are in a similar vein as Prince's New Portraits. However, unlike that series, the New Paintings focuses on portraits of painters painting on Instagram, very often with back to the camera, facing away from the viewer. The resulting images are ambiguously manipulated; the series is self-described as an act of social science fiction. The image captions, integral to the artwork, contain a dense Bird Talk text, including ambiguous autobiography and art history commentary.Joan Katz offers some explanation in a comment found in a New Painting, stating: Deep Nostalgia. Legitimate Doubts. Safeguards to prevent misuse. Digital imitation. Resemblance without manipulations. Skilled impersonations. Staged illusions. Imitation of Life (the sequel). Beginning in 2008, Prince began sequencing found photographic portraits into a simple count: one person, two people, three people, four peo…ple: 1-2-3-4. This process, applied to musicians, actors, celebrities and anonymous individuals, transforms the photographs into acts of performance: solo artist, duo, trio, quartet. The numbers 1-2-3-4 act like the count-in of a punk/garage rock song (by The Rascals, The Modern Lovers or The Ramones), an archetypal pop song rhythm signature. The numbering of the images gives the sequence an immediate sense of action, while the appropriation of jersey numbers turns it into a sport.
