It seeks to answer the question, "How well has social science approximated the natural science model?" Professor Lachenmeyer offers a semantic-communicational analysis of science. He develops a minimal model similar to that proposed by Wittgenstein in his concept of "language games." Emphasis is placed on developing a meta-theory of science consisting of testable hypotheses about requisite scientific action to formulate adequate hypotheses. The author compares current social science to the model and exhaustively examines deficiencies. A range of methodological solutions are alternately scrutinized and rejected in favor of a complete overhaul of the discipline. Part One of The Essence of Social Research utilizes the communication model of science. The first chapter deals with questions about the events in the scientific domain. Specifically, language and reality are discussed and related; the statement components of the action of scientists is schematized; and the core requirement of science as communication is introduced and defined. The second chapter analyzes the statement form of problems, questions, identity, and measurement and their interrelationships in the communication scheme. Chapter three discusses the auxiliary hypotheses needed to attain the scientific goals of prediction and control of the events. Part Two deals with the inadequacies of social science given the model of science presented in Part One. In the fourth chapter, social science identification and measurement is considered. Finally, the fifth chapter is concerned with the weaknesses in social-scientific hypotheses of all types. Most of these weaknesses are directly implied by the failure of identification and measurement and by the general lack of precision of social science theory. Familiar metatheoretical solutions to the inadequacies of social science are examined-an important subsection because many familiar methodological edicts are open to question. Significant among these are the use of indicators and the sophisticated mathematical procedures implied; the current emphasis on conjoint and fundamental measurement in psychology; the use of multiple measures in psychology, sociology, and economics; and the extensive logic of control employed by most social scientists. The critique that emerges has the benefit of emphasizing continuities and consistencies among social researchers of different methodological persuasions. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
