Softcover. Condición: Very Good. First edition. Small quarto. 16, [12, plates] pp. Illustrated from black and white photographs, and from a drawing. Printed wrappers over stapled textblock. Ownership stamp and signature of a noted American psychologist, as well as the subject written along the spine, both on the cover. Staples a… bit oxidized and a couple of leaves very lightly foxed, lower corner creased throughout, very good. A very interesting document, proposing the possibility of attaining vision through the cheek, via medical hypnosis or Buddhist concentration development. Illustrated with half-tone photographs of a 1959 demonstration of the phenomenon, and from a drawing of the proposed "extra-ocular pathways." Published and distributed on the occasion of Mahidol Memorial Day (Prince Mahidol Adulyadej is regarded as the father of modern medicine and public health in Thailand), and with the author's compliment slip tipped-on to the copyright page. *OCLC* locates only five copies, two in the U.S. (Chicago, National Library of Medicine).

The president would have been Benjamin West, who served from…1792 to his death on March 11, 1820, a Saturday, or Thomas Lawrence, who succeeded West and died on January 7, 1830, which was a Thursday. Sotheby, who knew everybody, was not a member of the Academy, but his friend Lawrence produced a chalk portrait of him, now in the National Portrait Galley. One page, 5 lines, in Fine condition.

Basil Montagu was "on intimate terms with Wordsworth and Coleridge." His first son, Edward, lived with Wordsworth as a boy, and "is mentioned in Wordsworth's lines 'To my Sister' and 'Anecdotes for Fathers'." Montagu's third wife, maiden name Benson, had known Robert Burns in her youth, "was a fine woman, (who) in her middle age fascinated Edward Irving" Irving introduced Carlyle into her circle in 1824 (James McMullen Rigg in DNB, who found nothing indicating disrespect of the family in "Reminiscences"). The letters in this volume, written between 1825 and 1830, are not printed in Carlyle's "Early Letters" (1886) nor his "Letters 1826-1836", both issued by Macmillan. Some wear, a Very Good copy.
