Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. Georgiana's story is surely one of the most compelling and dramatic in late Georgian society and is the subject of numerous books and the highly successful film The Duchess. Love affairs, tragedy, high society, gambling and a host of illegitimate children are shared between herself, her best friend, her lover and her husband. A young emotionally demonstrative girl is married to an elderly reserved duke. She finds herself unprepared for her duties as duchess and discovers that her husband already has a mistress with whom he had a daughter. All the duke requires of Georgiana is to provide him with an heir-and this she seems-at first-unable to do. Starved of affection, Georgiana throws herself into the fashionable world and becomes the darling of society. Where Georgiana leads others follow and she set the fashions, whether for three foot high ostrich feathers or tall towers of hair with elaborate decorations. In 1782, the duke and duchess meet the fascinating Lady Elizabeth Foster, recently separated from her husband and living in restricted circumstances. Elizabeth attaches herself to Georgiana and is invited to return home with them. She becomes not only a close friend to Georgiana, but a mistress to the duke and bears him two illegitimate children. Surprisingly Georgiana supports this strange 'menage a trois', but nevertheless she continues her bedroom duties to the duke eventually bearing him two daughters, and finally in 1790, the much sought-after son. The true love of Georgiana's life is the handsome young Whig politician, Charles Grey. She embarks upon an affair and in 1791 faces the worst crisis of her life when she discovers she is carrying his child. The duke gives an ultimatum-give up Grey and the child-or never see her three children again. She chooses her children. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. Nigel Kennedy changed the course of classical music in the late 1980s with his interpretation of Vivaldis Four Seasons. He was revolutionary: in his performance and presentation; in his technique and his open-minded attitude. A natural boundary-pusher and musical adventurer, Nigel Kennedy blew minds - and sales records - as he became the best-selling violinist of all time. Instead of an Introduction, Nigel opens with a tongue-in-cheek Warning: readers should beware of his politically incorrect writing style and his frank take on the BBC, record companies, the Bavarian Police and any other self-appointed wielders of power. It sets the tone for a truly original memoir that is as playful, unconventional and carefully executed as his music. The book is structured like a musical performance, with Interludes, Outros and an Encore separating the regular chapters which cover Nigels life story, from his humble beginnings and scholarship to the newly created Yehudi Menuhin School - and then New York at The Juilliard School - to his flourishing career and break-through as a world-class superstar. Interludes cover subjects varying from Nigels best and worst gigs (It might seem strange that shit gigs stick in the mind so much more than the good ones but I suppose it makes sense), to run-ins with rock stars and Police forces around the world. His anecdote on the London Metropolitan Polices handling of a noise complaint at an after-show all-star jam is particularly funny: These guys (the Met) were cheerful, they dealt with the situation and didnt escalate the problem when there wasnt one. 10/10 Outros cover Nigels thoughts on classical music today - fascinating reading from the perspective of a virtuoso - to Brexit, where the spelling of the word alone leaves the reader in little doubt as to which side of the fence the author sits. Encores is a comprehensive section on Nigels recorded output, covering his early classical work, the Four Seasons and later albums. There are insights into his work with rock musicians including Robert Plant, the late drummer Michael Lee, Killing Joke singer Jaz Coleman, and producers Eddie Kramer (Jimmy Hendrix) and John Leckie (Stone Roses). Nigels writing on Gershwin, Yehudi Menuhin, Stephan Grappelli (my biggest inspiration), Jimi Hendrix and the Doors is compelling. Nigel writes of his interests outside music - boxing and football - which provide inspiration and balance to his creative output (on Aston Villa - a true blessing for me to have an outlet in which I was surrounded by normal, honest, hard-working people who did proper jobs). There is a splendid chapter on Kitchen Golf, a not-without-risk variation of the game, conjured up with close friend and mischief-maker Gary Lineker, during a messy late night kitchen session. My whole life has been spent breaking down barriers between people and this book is proof of that. states Nigel in his Warning. Its a Mission Statement borne out in Uncensored with aplomb. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. A monumental event in the history of female emancipation occurred in Grantham, Lincolnshire, on 27 November 1914: the first female police officers went on duty. The government's decision to Employ the Women Police Volunteers was an outcome of the wider push for female liberation, with the Suffragette Movement at its heart. In the years leading up to the First World War, crimes involving women such as prostitution and drug abuse were on the increase; sexual prejudice and social constraints meant that the traditional male police force was unable to cope with these issues fairly and effectively. Women activists seized the opportunity to set up female volunteer police forces to tackle these problems by unique methods-concentrating on vulnerable men and women, discreetly monitoring pimps and dealers, and actively discouraging young girls from entering a life of vice. Behind the movement was an urge to push women into the male-dominated roles left vacant during the war. The first policewomen faced great prejudice and hardship, and were often placed in isolated, vulnerable positions-but they quickly found strength in their growing numbers. This book describes the difficulties these pioneering women faced, their experiences in becoming figures of authority, and their inexorable rise to equality against the backdrop of the Suffragette Movement. 27 November 1914 was not just a victory for the advocates of policewomen-it was a turning point for the entire women's movement. David Jacobs, Alan Freeman, John Peel, Tommy Vance and Roger Scott were in their different ways five of the greatest pioneering British disc jockeys of the last sixty years. All were accomplished media personalities in their own right, and all were passionate and well-informed about the music they presented on radio and sometimes television. Jacobs, a much-respected broadcaster for over sixty years, was the face of 'Juke Box Jury' and the maestro of easy listening and songs from the shows; 'Fluff' Freeman the pop-picker, who introduced the Top 20 rundown, later championing heavy and progressive rock, followed by opera and the classics; Peel revelled in the alternative music scene generally shunned by most daytime presenters; Vance, 'the Music Vendor' the friend and lover of hard rock and New Wave of British Heavy Metal; and Scott an eclectic mix of genres in a career which sadly proved all too short. This book examines the lives and careers of each.

Kaiser Friedrich III and his consort Victoria, Princess Royal of Great Britain, had six children who lived to maturity, the eldest being Kaiser Wilhelm II. The three younger sisters, Victoria, Sophie and Margaret, were particularly supportive of their mother during her widowhood and remained close throughout their lives. Like their parents, they would know much sorrow as adults. Victoria's romance with Alexander of Battenberg, Prince of Bulgaria, was thwarted by Bismarck for political reasons and she married twice, firstly to a minor German prince and secondly to a young Russian adventurer who left her to die in poverty. Sophie married the future King Constantine of Greece, whose ill-starred reign saw them forced to leave their throne not once but twice, both dying in exile. Margaret married a prince of Hesse-Cassel, both became members of the Nazi party, and she lived to see her family and house become victims of theft on a major scale at the hands of occupying forces at the end of the Second World War. Using previously unpublished sources, this is the first biography to tell the lives of all three princesses. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. Flight from a Lady is probably Macdonell's most enigmatic works. It is fictional, but hardly reads like a novel. The plot is the story of a very wealthy young man escaping from the clutches of a woman - a woman so determined that the man goes to great lengths to cover his tracks and avoid being trapped by her, the she-wolf. He charters a plane - a Douglas - crewed by a young Dutch charter crew, and off he goes, to France, Italy, Greece, the Middle East and to India. War was looming (the book was published in 1939, just prior to the Second World War) and with his usual prescience Macdonell foretells the future, correctly predicting what was to come. The book is written as if a series of letters, and if were not a novel it would make a wonderful travelogue, for Macdonell, well-educated and well-travelled, makes a good travel narrator. He reminisces on the past, he provides political commentary, and generally uses the loose fabric ofhis novel to voice his pet themes. His reflection on his youthful travels in Germany are an example: It was unfair of us - and we knew it. But we resolutely put the unfairness out of our minds. The mark tumbled, and the Austrian crown tumbled, and the Hungarian crown tumbled, and we brandished our pound notes and wallowed in the misfortunes of others. We bought their wine for a few pence and their cigars for a farthing and their theatre tickets for an old song, and boasted about it, while they were half-starved and desperately frightened for the future. But they never once reproached us for our profiteering and our arrogance - and never, through all the semi-starvation and the fear, did the sound of laughter entirely die away in the Salzkammergut. It is unbelievable to think of now. In those days we had just finished fighting a bloody war against those very people. We had been trained on Europe's pet curriculum of Hatred. We had been told by innumerable fat sergeant-majors and over-Kummelled major-generals that there was no good Hun except a dead Hun. New introduction by Alan Sutton. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. The Surrender of Napoleon tells the true story of how the legendary French emperor surrendered to the British on HMS Bellerophon and the events between 24 May and 8 August 1815. While HMS Bellerophon was stationed off Rochefort in the Bay of Biscay observing French warships in the harbour, Napoleon has been defeated at the Battle of Waterloo. News had reached Rear Admiral Sir Frederick Lewis Maitland on 28 June that Napoleon was planning an escape to America from the French Atlantic coast, possible from Bordeaux. Believing that Rochefort was the more likely point of escape, Maitland also sent two ships to cover the ports of Bordeaux and Arcachon. With HMS Superb and a string of British frigates, corvettes and brigs watching the coast, there was no escape for Napoleon. Maitland's instincts proved correct and Napoleon arrived at Rochefort in early July. Finding escape barred by the patrolling HMS Bellerophon and unable to remain in France, he authorised the opening of negotiations with the commander of the British warship off the coast. Maitland refused the request to allow Napoleon to sail for America, but offered to take him to England. The negotiations went on for four days, but eventually Napoleon acquiesced. He embarked on 15 July with his staff and servants where he surrendered to Maitland. Maitland placed his cabin at the former emperor's disposal and sailed for England. She reached Torbay on 24 July, but was ordered to Plymouth, while a decision was made by the government over Napoleon's fate. She sailed again on 4 August and while off Berry Head on 7 August, Napoleon and his staff were removed to HMS Northumberland, which conveyed him to his final exile on Saint Helena. The Surrender of Napoleon is Maitland's detailed and stunning narrative of the French emperors time on HMS Bellerophon, which he originally published in 1826. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. The 1980s were some of the most tumultuous years for the British bus industry. The Thatcher Government, in power throughout the decade, brought about privatisation of the National Bus Company and the Scottish Bus Group. In addition, 1986 saw the introduction of full deregulation of bus services, with the exception of London. Don't think that London was unaffected by these changes though, as the omnibus operations of London Transport was split up and then sold into private hands. Deregulation meant competition and "bus wars" broke out in many parts of the country, sometimes in the most unexpected of places. However, towards the end of the decade, things began to settle down and we were able to witness the emergence of larger groups, for example Stagecoach. The author was fortunate enough to be able to capture the scene on colour film, right through the decade, and the best of his results are seen within these pages. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. By the middle of the 19th century, the demands to house Birmingham's rapidly expanding industry and workforce swiftly urbanised Nechells. Building in this north-east part of Birmingham was hastily constructed and became substandard. Working-class back to back courtyards with terraced houses were built dominating this area alongside factories, workshops, corner shops and pubs. Two gasworks were constructed in Windsor Street and Nechells Place polluting the air with an offensive odour compounded by the neighboring Saltley gasworks and a power station to the north. Today, fresh air has returned to Nechells. Duel-carriageways now run where shopping centers once thrived. Various redevelopments have replaced the substandard housing with high-rise tower blocks and low-rise housing in landscaped settings. Many modern large and small units now house industry, business and entertainment complexes alongside the old. Through images and text, Changing Nechells captures the considerable changes Nechells has undergone throughout three generations. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
