Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Flight Recorder's latest title called The Long Drag is out now. Subtitled 'A Short History of British Target Towing', it has already been voted Book of the Month in its very first review!Written by Don Evans, who joined the RAF in 1942 and served as a Flight Mechanic working on Hurricanes an…d Defiants. Posted to Weston Zoyland in 1944 to service Martinet, Henley and Defiant target tugs, he was persuaded by the princely sum of ninepence a day flying pay to complete 90 hours as a target winch operator. He transferred to the Fleet Air Arm in 1945 until demobilisation in 1947, whereupon he began working at the A&AEE at Boscombe Down until his retirement in 1989. For 12 years he was supervisor of the Towed Target Development Section, where he was when awarded the British Empire Medal for the design of the Trident Target and the Rapid Target Exchanger. He is still involved with Boscombe Down where he looks after over 1,000 scale model aircraft. When compared to combat operations, target towing to most aviation enthusiasts is a non-event. Most of the time, however, air forces are at peace, but they need to prepare for war. In the absence of actual hostilities therefore, the only way for pilots, gunners and aircrew to learn how to fire their weaponry and hit their mark is with the aid of dummy targets. Consequently, providing the targets for the combatants to practice against is a vital, yet almost totally ignored role. In this concise yet fascinating history, possibly for the first time the ways and means by which the necessary aerial targetry and the associated equipment was provided for the British Services is described and explained in some 31,000 words, aided by photographs, technical details, diagrams and specifications. The human side of the target towing task, now almost a lost art, is not forgotten either, for as the author notes, 'the men who tow tails have tales to tell.' During peacetime, airforces train with their weaponry using dummy targets. In this book, the ways and means by which the necessary aerial targetry and the associated equipment provided for the British services is described and explained. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. If any airfield in the world could claim to be the home of military aviation, RAF Hendon in London might have to be the no.1 contender. In fact, Hendon's aviation heritage covers much more than just military aircraft and actually starts over 150 years ago in August 1862. When one Henry Treace…y Coxwell took a party on a balloon flight from the present-day Hendon site. It was not an auspicious start - suffering from light winds they only just reached a field near Mill Hill.Aviation returned to Hendon in 1910 in the form of British aviation pioneer Claude Grahame-White, who laid the foundations for the development of the Hendon site that was soon christened "The London Aerodrome". Many famous aviation personalities (not least Geoffrey de Havilland) came to Hendon and the fledgling airfield hosted nine Air Displays in the years leading up to World War I, before being requisitioned for pilot training and the air defence of London. Aircraft were also manufactured here including Morane-Saulnier Type H monoplanes and the Royal Aircraft Factory BE.2c.Aircraft production and civilian flying training continued post-war until the airfield became an RAF station in 1927. As World War II unfolded, Hendon was a Fighter Command station: Hurricanes flew from Hendon at the height of the Battle of Britain and later in the war USAF units moved in as Hendon became home to transport and communications squadrons. With the return of peacetime, and despite the steady encroachment of urban London on the already cramped airfield site, flying continued at RAF Hendon, with the last aircraft using the site as late as 1968. Today, Hendon is best known as home of the RAF Museum, housed in part in the historic First World War hangars and widely regarded as one of the world's premier aviation collections. With over 140 historic photographs, many previously unseen, RAF Hendon is a comprehensive history of this historic airfield, the landmark events that occurred here and the remarkable aviation pioneers that secured Hendon's lasting place in aviation history and in the development of military air power. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Once the flying machine was a practical proposition, its military use became evident and governments needed to develop a way of marking their property. Flying a flag was an obvious but ineffective and dangerous solution so painting the representation of the flag was the natural alternative.T…he first known markings to identify nationality were used in the 1910 Bombing Competition in Vienna where each competing machine carried its national colours. Formalised in 1912, precise shapes and colours of military markings were initially introduced by France closely followed by Romania.Organised by country, Military Insignia of the World brings together global markings from such countries as Abkhazia, Afghanistan, Chad and Iran through to Kenya, Kuwait the Ukraine and . Over 500 insignia combine with contemporary photographs and a brief history of the military air activity of that country to provide a wealth of information for the aviation historian and modeller alike. This is the second part of a photographic review of some of the greatest classic propeller-driven aircraft of a bygone era - the propliners - still operating in some of the most remote places in the world. The Alaskan operator Buffalo Airways, now famous for its starring role in the 'Ice Pilots' TV series, appears in this volume as do many other 'propliner' operators whether flying water-bombers, cargo or exotic types built in Russia and China. Vintage airliners still being used in South America are also captured in this evocative photographic survey of the world's surviving propliners. The water-bomber fleet is well represented, from the huge Martin Mars with its 200 foot wingspan through the Consolidated Catalina, to the purpose built Canadair CL-215, the Grumman S-2 Tracker and its development into the Conair Firecat. Throughout the world, other propliners operate in many guises. China uses its Yunshuji -5 with locally fitted winglets and the Harbin Y-11 for crop spraying, whilst Russian-built Antonov An-12 transport aircraft are used further afield in such places as the UAE, Armenia and Angola. The Airbus Industries Super Guppy is derived from the piston-powered Guppy first used to move outsize components for the space industry, the Douglas DC-6 still commonly operates in the wilds of Alaska and around the Colombian town of Villavicencio, many DC-3 Dakotas continue to ferry freight and passengers to small towns and settlements. Propliners of the World Volume 2 presents over 170 colour photographs of these classic propeller-driven aircraft, forming an evocative look a vanishing world of classic pounding pistons.
