Paperback. Condición: Like New. In this thought-provoking volume, Eran Fisher interrogates the relationship between algorithms as epistemic devices and modern notions of subjectivity.Over the past few decades, as the instrumentalization of algorithms has created knowledge that informs our decisions, preferences, tastes, and actions, and the very sense of who we are, they have also undercut, and arguably undermined, the Enlightenment-era ideal of the subject. Fisher finds that as algorithms enable a reality in which knowledge is created by circumventing the participation of the self, they also challenge contemporary notions of subjectivity.Through four case-studies, this book provides an empirical and theoretical investigation of this transformation, analyzing how algorithmic knowledge differs from the ideas of critical knowledge which emerged during modernity - Fisher argues that algorithms create a new type of knowledge, which in turn changes our fundamental sense of self and our concept of subjectivity. This book will make a timely contribution to the social study of algorithms and will prove especially valuable for scholars working at the intersections of media and communication studies, internet studies, information studies, the sociology of technology, the philosophy of technology, and science and technology studies. …

Paperback. Condición: Very Good.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Do not be afraiddear heartto feelYou are worth honoring. You are worth loving. Do you dare look beneath the surface of your heart-to access the stories you've tucked away, the emotions you feel right now? What if you don't like what you see? And what if you do?The Uncovering voices the internal-and perfectly human-struggle, the hidden terrors of low self-worth, and the devastating beauty of honesty. Offered with refreshing courage and candor, these poems guide you to stop hiding-from yourself, in all your beautiful mess-and recognize the darkest parts of yourself only when they are held up to the light. The Uncovering reminds you: - It is okay to be scared when you look at your scars. They aren't beautiful yet-but wait.- What we want, truly, is always beneath the surface of striving.- Life isn't defined by wistfulness and longing but by abandoning all excuses and stepping forward again and again.- We can be mysteries to ourselves, and the journey of catching glimpses can fuel what is most true in us.Whom The Uncovering is perfect for: - Women and men of all ages who feel the weight of personal struggle (shame, self-contempt/low self-esteem, pride, envy, fear) and want to feel less alone.- Teenagers who feel overwhelmed by life's expectations and crave understanding and hope.- Teachers and parents who are excited to discuss poetry in the classroom or at home.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Centuries ago a poet was defined as a singer. Why do we love song? Probably because it so often lifts and opens the heart. and because it can speak that for which the heart has no words. The Presence of One Word does all of this. Andrea Potos's poems capture with graceful insight her wide breadth of belonging, her treasured ties to family and loved friends, to great masters of various arts, to landscapes that shimmer and invite, to small and large details of the everyday as well as the momentous. She belongs because she beholds. To her, these people, places, and observations are vastly more than their literal dimensions-they are genuinely luminous. "It seems I am forever / looking for the thin / place, wishing to glimpse / inside a moment, close enough / to stand sentry to the invisible." Potos does indeed discern the invisible and shares it with us in poem after poem. In making Greek meatballs, she notes that it's not only appetites that "widen with anticipation"-so do spirits "and every holy sense." Girlhood swims are both play and exploring "the surface between air and water, [a] . threshold between worlds." And in elegant Viennese coffeehouses where time seems to stop, she imbibes more than the delectable beverages, finding in this atmosphere that "grandeur / seeps into your once stagnant thought / you have placed yourself in the dignity / of. what goes on and on and on." It's all in her capacity for deeper vision: ".this is not about the eye / but the heart, and its gates." We come away refreshed by these heart-views, feeling "she is the one, / containing multitudes. / .with pure light overflowing / through every expansive room." And we find ourselves agreeing with this wise assessment: "Eternity / the woman said of my poems.".…
