In an interesting and unusual 2-page translator's foreword Peter Krausser (Göttingen) notes that he has translated quite freely and even made small changes in content, in agreement with the author, who understands German quite well. He also defends the value of American philosophy. Schneider also adds a 2-page foreword to the German edition, dated also Göttingen, 1956. He has added a section on the origins of American philosophy Both observe the difficulty of translating American philosophical terminology into German. Schneider was a student of John Dewey at Columbia and his teaching assistant.
