Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Jim Mackens latest book is a sequel to Between a Death and a Difficult Birth. Both analyse the effects of the cultural shifts of the late 1960s on the labour movement. What is to be Done takes the debate a step further by suggesting solutions to the decline in membership and support for the…trade union movement and the ALP.\nThe Faulkner Report of 2010 on the decline in the political fortunes of the ALP calls for root and branch reform of the party. Mackens book looks at possible solutions to the decline in union membership as well. He suggests a return to first principles to govern recruitment and retention of members to both the party and the union movement. He is particularly scathing at the top down government of both institutions.\nHis solutions will not please factional leaders of the unions or the party and, in this regard, he supports the condemnation of factionalism in the Faulkner Report. There is no doubt that this short book will promote heated debate in the ranks of the labour movement but few will be found to disagree with his historic study of developments nor the logic of his case for dramatic change in the structures of the union movement and the ALP. Jim Macken's latest book is a sequel to Between a Death and a Difficult Birth. Both analyse the effects of the cultural shifts of the late 1960s on the labour movement. What is to be Done takes the debate a step further by suggesting solutions to the decline in membership and support for the trade union movement and the ALP. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This book aims to help students struggling with the transition from school or work to university. It explains how to enjoy university study, and how to transform even the difficult times into positive learning experiences. Most importantly it shows how enjoying the learning process leads to…better results. \nWith a Foreword by Professor Craig McInnis (University of Melbourne) and Professor Adrian Lee (University of New South Wales). In their words: \n"The key feature of The First Year Experience is not that is based on the experience of the authors alone, who have a long and successful record of teaching first year students well, but that it incorporates the view of real, living students at a large and sometimes bewildering university. We hear of their hopes, their disappointments, their moments of enlightenment and above all some of the approaches they have successfully negotiated to succeed in, overcome and enjoy their university experience."\n Aims to help students struggling with the transition from school or work to university. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This remarkable book takes a fresh look at life as a process, not an end, encouraging readers to look for the meaning of life not in terms of achievement or others' opinions, but in the everyday joys of living. \nFrom the Preface .\nIt is easy to become attached to goals. Goals promise certa…inty, and the anxiety they induce only makes their achievement seem more meritorious. The trouble is that goals, even worthy ones, remove our sense of proportion and our sensitivity to what is happening around us. \nIt sometimes takes a fall to bring us back into the present. 'Where have I been? What have I been doing all my life?' We awaken to the world as if for the first time. \nWe have written this book out of an increasing sense of the importance of these moments. Once you recognise life as a gift rather than an achievement, you realise that 'meaning in life' is found only in the vitality of the social relations in which we participate.\n This remarkable book takes a fresh look at life as a process, not an end, encouraging readers to look for the meaning of life not in terms of achievement or others' opinions, but in the everyday joys of living. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The Black Grapevine tells the extraordinary story of Indigenous efforts to stop children becoming part of the 'stolen generations' and to end the government policies and practices which destroyed their families.\n\nLinda Briskman uses the story of the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and I…sland Child Care (SNAICC) to centre her book. Indigenous people involved tell how they came together to form a national organisation for child care, how they found similar experiences from one end of Australia to the other, how they pooled experience and emotion to provide support for one another, how they lobbied for a national inquiry.\n\nAnd they campaigned. Indigenous activists fought with astonishing resilience for recognition of past and present practices, for the right to have Indigenous viewpoints to the forefront, and for resources.\n\nBriskman's story goes beyond the contest with the state to give a convincing portrait of the ways in which Indigenous groups worked. There are connections with international action, educational and fund-raising projects, and the much-vaunted annual Aboriginal and Islander Children's Day.\n\nShe concludes by reflecting on the successes of campaigns and actions to date, and the extent of 'unfinished business'. Her strong academic background combines with the oral testimony of the activists to produce a fast-moving book that is both entertaining and rigorous. An account, primarily through oral history, of the activism of indigenous people involved in the struggle to keep their children with their own families and communities. The story is told through the people involved in the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Island Child Care (SNAICC) which has a pivotal role in this quest. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Andrew Stewart and George Williams, leading scholars and media commentators, explain what has been called the most important decision of the Australian High Court since the Tasmanian Dam Case in 1983. They show what was being argued and why it was being argued, as well as what was decided an…d the implications for Australia's future. They include key passages of the majority judgment, and from the dissents of Justices Kirby and Callinan. Might it reduce State Parliaments to "impotent debating societies" (Justice Callinan)? Andrew Stewart and George Williams, leading scholars and media commentators, explain the Work Choices decision - possibly the most important decision of the Australian High Court since the Tasmanian Dam Case in 1983. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Why do Aboriginal women in Australia experience such high levels of violence in their own communities? In this considered and carefully researched book, Joan Kimm discusses the extent and nature of the violence, its underlying causes, current policies that deal with it, and changes that migh…t improve these policies. \nHer work covers: \n\nthe devastating legacy of European colonialism on Indigenous culture, \nmodern anthropological evidence about patriarchy and violence in traditional Aboriginal societies, \nbeliefs held by Aboriginals, particularly men, about their cultural heritage, \nthe impact of cultural heritage upon modern Indigenous society, and \nchanging judicial attitudes to sentencing Aboriginal men for violence to Aboriginal women, shifting from emphasis on the mens cultural background to emphasis on the womens rights as victims. \nKimm shows how this multi-faceted environment, particularly the interaction of two patriarchal laws, has had, and continues to have, very real destructive effects on Aboriginal women. \nKimm argues powerfully that Aboriginal women, like all women, like all humans, have the universal right to lives free of violence. She contends that current law, policy and practice place too much emphasis on their rights as Indigenous people and too little on their rights as women. A shift in emphasis will be an important first step to safer lives.\n Why do Aboriginal women in Australia experience such high levels of violence in their own communities? In this considered and carefully researched book, Joan Kimm discusses the extent and nature of the violence, its underlying causes, current policies that deal with it, and changes that might improve these policies. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The editors of this book boldly proclaim that Eureka is Australia's greatest story and they have gathered together some of our countrys finest historians to prosecute the case. Collectively, they compile a strong argument. In the late 19th century that acute American observer, Mark Twain, ca…lled the Ballarat rebellion the finest thing in Australasian history and, like all such milestone moments in any countrys expanding tale, Eureka challenges because of the sheer number of interpretations that have been imposed upon it, both before Twain and after. During the sesquicentenary year of Eureka, 2004, one journalist rightly observed that Eureka is not so much history as many versions of history. The question of who owns the Eureka story is destined never to be answered, but one thing is certain: the superb Charter of Bakery Hill, an irresistible sequence of goldfield events leading to tragedy, a cast of characters drawn straight from a classic novel, violence and murder on an early Sabbath morning in December 1854, and a never-ending aftermath that arguably has had more energy within it in the 20th and 21st centuries than it had in the 19th these extraordinary elements of a grand narrative will forever stimulate the Australian imagination. Eureka: Australias Greatest Story is certain to stoke the fires. The editors of this book boldly proclaim that Eureka is Australia's 'greatest story', and they have gathered together some of our country's finest historians to prosecute the case. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. After decades of rape law reform, it is still being argued that the criminal justice system fails rape victims, that too few cases are prosecuted and too few prosecutions result in conviction. \nCompelling Engagements is a ground-breaking work which investigates the narratives of rape law an…d of romance fiction, and explores the outmoded and strikingly similar depictions of their normative female subjects. These are women who are not only vulnerable but also evidently worthy of the protections or rewards promised: punishment of the rapist or the heros love. \nLarcombes analysis explores: \nthe definitions of rape in the criminal law and romance in Harlequin Mills and Boon fiction; \nthe feminine subjects represented in the texts of rape law and romance fiction; \nthe feminised subject positions the texts produce: the rape complainant and the romance reader; \nparticular fictionalisations of the rape complainant and the romance reader: the false rape complainant and the ideal romance consumer; and \nhow these fictionalisations serve the interests of the criminal justice system and the romance publishing industry. \n\nLarcombe shows how the legal construction of gender and subjectivity in rape law is still working to disempower victims. She suggests feminisms failure to accommodate womens investment in heroines of romance fiction has limited their effectiveness in transforming rape law. \nCompelling Engagements is an original and engaging analysis, and fascinating reading for anyone who deals with rape as part of the criminal justice system. Investigates the narratives of rape law and of romance fiction, and explores the outmoded and strikingly similar depictions of their normative female subjects. Equal rights to land; land taxation; land prices; land rents; land nationalisation; and free trade and protection remain issues which are highly relevant today.\nEngaging and insightful, this is a timely and critical study of the reforms proposed by Henry George and the possibility of establishing an efficient and equitable system for the ownership of natural resources.\n In 1890, the famous American economist and social reformer, Henry George, arrived in Australia to begin a controversial 98-day public lecture tour. This book provides a detailed account of this important and progressive lecture series. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This book presents the real life stories of five young people who were all born in the same place at the same time and who all seem to be flourishing at age 21 but who have had very different life experiences along the way. The book draws on the findings of the unique Life Chances Study, a l…ongitudinal research project which has followed the lives of a group of young people for 21 years since their birth in inner Melbourne in 1990. The study has explored in detail the impacts of family income and disadvantage for children over time. The wealth of data from the interviews over the years is used to present the young peoples stories from infancy to age 21, both from the perspectives of their parents and, as they grow up, in their own words.\nAn introductory chapter introduces the stories and the context. This is followed by five detailed life stories and a concluding chapter which reflects on issues of social and economic support for families. The stories include young people from both advantaged and disadvantaged family backgrounds and with parents from different birthplaces (China and Vietnam as well as Australia). They illuminate such diverse aspects of life as the development of ethnic identity, language barriers, career planning, neighbourhood and choice of school.\nLife Chances makes an important contribution to understanding inequality and disadvantage in our society. It enables the reader to engage with the lives and thoughts of five families over 21 years and can provide insights into the complexity of individual lives in their wider context.\nIn the media\n\n \n\n Life chances: policy must respond to the real lives of young people, The Conversation_26 June 2014 Read article.\n Life chances in Australia, Neos Kosmos_11 June 2014 Read article.\n The Australian_2 June 2014 Read article. \n\n\n\n\n Presents the real life stories of five young people who were all born in the same place at the same time and who all seem to be flourishing at age 21 but who have had very different life experiences along the way. So eventually instead of access to a bathroom, they got me access to a Toyota so that I could drive away to a toilet. So the entire crew knew exactly when I was cycling every single month. And they used to piss in the connecting pipes for me to discover when I got back from the drive. And looking back on it now I also realise that the blokes were also pissing on my boots when I was gone I see now but at the time I was just so confused and baffled by it all. Female miner, aged 21\n\nAustralian women are enduring a cultural epidemic of workplace sexual harassment in remote and rural workplaces the experience is rife, rampant and as hard to contain as any infectious disease. Whispers from the Bush The Workplace Sexual Harassment of Australian Rural Women is the first book to focus upon the nature, pervasiveness and reporting of sexual harassment in rural Australian workplaces. Drawing upon 107 interviews conducted with rurally located employees and employers about their experiences and observations of sexual harassment at work, it shines a light upon a phenomenon largely hidden or minimised by silence, distance and an atmosphere of saturated masculinity. The book seeks to give voice to the whispers from the bush by exploring themes such as:\n\nthe impact of male dominance and mateship on the nature and prevalence of sexual harassment within the rural workplace;\nthe complex survival behaviours adopted by many rural women in response to sexual harassment as it occurs most surprisingly, extending to women blaming women;\nrural employee and employer attitudes towards the disclosure of sexual harassment; and\nthe limited reach and effectiveness of laws against sexual harassment in rural Australia.\n\nThe book concludes by making practical recommendations for the commencement of national dialogue about sexual harassment in rural Australia, towards a cultural adoption of zero-tolerance.\n\nDr Skye Saunders in the news.\n\nThe blokes were pissing on my boots: MTR launches new book exposing workplace harassment of rural women, Melinda Tankard Reist blog, 20 March 2016 Read full article.\nWomen feel like intruders new book reveals extent of sexual harassment in the rural workplace, ANU College of Law News, 10 March 2016 Read full article.\nFiona Nashs Im a girl suggests you cant be taken seriously, The Australian, 18 February 2016 Read full article.\nANU study finds most women working in remote areas subject to sexual harassment, ABC Rural, 8 May 2015 Read full article/Listen to Interview.\nResearch reveals culture of sexual harassment in rural workplaces , Central Western Daily, 27 April 2015 Read full article.\nRural Australia's sexual harassment 'epidemic', ABC Radio National, Bush Telegraph, 5 November 2013 Read full article/Listen to Interview.\n This is the first book to focus upon the nature, pervasiveness and reporting of sexual harassment in rural Australian workplaces. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Homophobia is a prejudice with effects that extend far beyond the gay and lesbian community. While its physical, emotional and social effects have been charted to some extent, the development of homophobia in Australia has yet to be fully explored. \nHomophobia: An Australian History is the…first book to consider homophobia in a distinctively Australian context. In this collection, thirteen well-known scholars examine the embedded homophobic attitudes that Australian gay and lesbian activists have fought to change. The book traces the evolution of homophobia, from its expression in Australias past as a colonial settler society, through to manifestations in present day society. \nThe compilation of this text is timely, given the 2007 release of the Same Sex: Same Entitlements report of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. The release of this report, which focused on institutionalised and legal homophobia, has raised public awareness of these issues and sparked broader debates about homosexual rights. The thirtieth anniversary of Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras earlier this year also offers an ideal opportunity to reflect on the past gains and future goals of the gay and lesbian rights movement. \nThe collected chapters in this book argue that homophobia developed in conjunction with the growth of a modern homosexual identity in the second half of the nineteenth century. To various extents, the legal and medical professions and other social institutions have perpetuated homophobic attitudes. Homophobia: An Australian History raises awareness of the devastating impact these attitudes can have on individuals and on society.\nAddendum: \nAt the commencement of Page IX, Dr Ruth Fords name and academic position was omitted. Dr Fords biographical entry under Notes on Contributors should read: \nDr Ruth Ford is a lecturer in Australian history at La Trobe University. She has published extensively on Australian lesbian, queer and gender history. She is currently attempting to combine motherhood with researching, writing and teaching. Her publications include articles in Labour History, Gender and History (UK) and Australian Historical Studies, as well as book chapters in 'Madness' in Australia: histories, heritage and the asylum, edited by Catharine Coleborne and Dolly MacKinnon, Gender and War: Australians at war in the twentieth century, edited by Joy Damousi and Marilyn Lake and Sex, Power and Justice: historical perspectives on the law in Australia, 1788-1990, edited by Diane Kirkby.\n Homophobia: An Australian History is the first book to consider homophobia in a distinctively Australian context.
