Añadir al carritoPaperback. Near Fine condition. Not Inscribed. 90 Pages. Fully illustrated throughout. The Giants Causeway is the best known geological feature of the North Antrim coast, but there are many others of considerable interest. This book explains the geology of the area in a global context. It relates how the rocks which now make up Ireland drifted across the surface of the world through geological time, and how they came to shape the extraordinary landscape of this very special area. This book also includes illustrated excursion guides, and is written to encourage visitors to delve into and interpret geological history for themselves.

Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dust-wrapper. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Provenance; from the library of Patrick O'D. Fox "Bangor" with signed and inscribed bookplate. Series; Northern Ireland archaeological monographs ; no. 6. Physical description; xxiii, 689 p. : ill. (some col.), maps (some col.) ; 28 cm. Notes; NOT price-clipped. First edition and first printing. Includes bibliographical references (p. 612-645) and index. Summary; Strangford Lough in County Down has been officially designated an Area of Outstanding Beauty. For thousands of years, however, its appeal was much more practical. Its vast natural harbour provided refuge for generations of seafarers seeking shelter from the notoriously dangerous Irish Sea and the fertility of its land and the richness of its wildlife proved a strong attraction for human settlement. The high quality of archaeology around the Logh has been recognized for many years. From 1995 to 2000 Northern Ireland's Environment and Heritage Service, conscious that the shore and seabed of the lough were hiding many more secrets, undertook a survey of the maritime cultural landscape. The results of the survey, published here, challenge our preconceptions about the knowledge and skills of our ancestors -excavations at Nendrum, for instance, revealed a seventh-century tidal corn-mill that demonstrated a previously unknown level of engineering sophistication. This illustrated volume seeks to present the survey results in a readily accessible form, adding to our appreciation of Strangford's past but also broadening the way we look at Ireland's history as a maritime region. Subjects; Underwater archaeology - Northern Ireland - Strangford Lough. Archaeology - Northern Ireland - Strangford Lough. Excavations (Archaeology) - Northern Ireland - Strangford Lough. Coastal archaeology - Northern Ireland - Strangford Lough. Strangford Lough (Northern Ireland) - Antiquities. Northern Ireland. archaeology. Archaeology by period / region. Maritime history ; Environmental archaeology. Social Science / Archaeology. Genres; Bibliography. Illustrated. 6 Kg.
