Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Today's volatile political and social climate, is characterised by demagogues, populism, and increasingly AI driven misinformation, combined with growing global crises ranging from obesity to the environment. This eclectic collection brings together a diverse array of international contributors to tackle these crucial issues. These include leading thinkers, policymakers, and activists drawn from the world of business, politics, education, religion, law, the arts, science, medicine, health and social enterprise. The book explores how people engage with ideas, particularly the lure of dark ideas, and proposes innovative policy solutions to combat susceptibility to 'dark' ideas such as misinformation, conspiracy theories and science denial. Recent trends and events across the UK, US, and many European countries, including the war in Ukraine, Brexit, the election of Trump, numerous immigration crises, and the perceived lack of solidarity during the Covid-19 pandemic, suggest a shift away from an 'ideas-informed' democratic society. Demagogues, Populism and Misinformation examines two crucial factors that influence ideas engagement: the allure of 'dark ideas' and the necessary preconditions for effective engagement with ideas, such as tolerance, intellectual humility, intellectual empathy (a willingness to engage with other perspectives), and intellectual curiosity.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Becoming an academic can be an overwhelming, if not a completely consuming, experience, and conceptualising this process is often fraught with a lack of understanding of both the process and the subsequent implications. Many academics struggle with the notion of who they are, despite believing that they are aware of who they want to be and where they are situated on their academic journey. This edited collection draws on the experiences of early and mid-career academics, as well as leaders in the field, to explore the role and contribution of the self when professionally undertaking research. Each chapter addresses valuable questions for academics to examine and articulate the self in one's work, and encourages the probing of the impact of academic engagement in higher education on individual fidelity to personal and professional values, beliefs and assumptions. With a focus on self-methodologies, including arts-based approaches to reflective and reflexive practice, the authors showcase methods that go beyond traditional reflective practice and explore the interplay of arts and self-practices. Conceptualising the Academic Self offers transformative educational insights with both theoretical and practical applications. It serves as a comprehensive guide for novice academics to seasoned educators and researchers, as well as institutional leaders and policy influencers, addressing the challenges of self-conceptualisation and self-formation.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'Possibility and Statistics' (P.S.) is a rigorously ethical, mixed-method way of knowing that centers lived experience, assets, and human agency; treats oral narratives as primary data; and designs measures, tools, and dissemination practices to cultivate flourishing rather than manage risk. Ivory A. Toldson's Possibility and Statistics is more than a book about statistical methods; it is a profound and necessary intervention into the soul of education and social science. It is a methodological treatise and a deeply personal work of literary scholarship that redefines the purpose of data in a world saturated with it. By developing a new statistical language, Toldson demonstrates that the principles of possibility--care, context, and potential--can be as analytically rigorous as the principles of probability. Possibility and Statistics introduces a new analytical toolkit; formula-driven methods designed to quantify hope. Metrics like the Overcoming Adversity Index (OAI), which measures success relative to context; the Potential Realization Quotient (PRQ), which quantifies achievement beyond statistical expectations; and the Resource Parity Index (RPI), which measures inequities in resources, give practitioners tangible tools. Toldson crafts a powerful argument that the tools of statistics, so often used to document despair and predict failure, must be re-engineered to architect hope and cultivate human potential. The result is a work that is at once a rigorous academic text and a moral call to arms for researchers, educators, policymakers, and anyone who wields data that touches human lives.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Education Redux is a timely and incisive work answering the myriad of questions aboutthe future of America. It is a general interest book of particular consequence to the currentpolitical and education debate. The U.S. is facing a surfeit of crises-social, politicaleconomic and environmental. These challenges continue to be met with traditional shorttermfeel-good, snake oil remedies. None of these actions begin to address the realstructural problems in the U.S. economy or in its schools.Education Redux examines the evolution of our economic despair. The popular perceptionis that the definitive cure is better education. There is a problem. K-12 schools do notwork. Per student spending, on a constant dollar basis, is up 600% over the past fewdecades. Yet, standardized test scores remain flat. The proposed solutions neverchange-more money, better teacher performance, more parental involvement. Researchers dependably provide nothingmore than minor variations on these themes, reiterating hackneyed predicaments and fixes. The school problem is essentially twofold. First, school curriculum and instructional design are incompatible with thepredisposition of the New Kids (Millennial cohort). Second, schools are perceived by students as not relevant. Educationprofessionals treat schools as though they operate in a vacuum, which is a lethal error. School reform agendas have to beresponsive to students within the context of social and economic realities. The loss of gainful employment opportunities in our economy is directly related to the dismantling of the Americanmanufacturing sector. The restoration of a 21st century manufacturing economy is predicated on our ability to infuse youngpeople with the technical and entrepreneurial skills necessary to pursue productivecareers. For the New Kids, video games define their reality. Games are based onskill, not following orders.Education Redux offers an operational guide, predicated on the use of up-to-datevideo game technology, for making schools both relevant and enjoyable. Therequirement for individual expression and building a community through thedevelopment of group skills can be attained using a program called the e-OneRoomSchoolhouse.Education Redux is the product of comprehensive research by the author, who hasextensive formal training and experience in manufacturing, finance, teaching andcommunity affairs. The book answers questions most people are afraid to ask.

The European Higher Education Area (EHEA) is an international initiative for the harmonisation of higher education systems in its forty-seven active members. While literature about the participation of the UK, Germany, France and Italy in the EHEA is diverse, limited research explores them jointly as the four founding members of the EHEA. Revisiting the important foundation of the Bologna Process and the wider Europeanisation agendas associated with the creation of the EHEA, Iryna Kushnir examines the perspectives from these four key higher education stakeholders of the EHEA through the lens of rationale-choice neoinstitutionalist view of Europeanisation. This allows for the theorisation of Europeanisation within the context of the EHEA, an angle which is sometimes neglected or insufficiently addressed in literature. Focusing on their interconnectedness of their EHEA membership agendas and their wider political agendas, the four case studies concentrate on the significance of their membership in the EHEA post-2020, after the Brexit transitional period and the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine. This not only deepen our understandings of Europeanisation but forces us to reflect on the broader meaning of the term and, crucially, informs EHEA international level policy-making in the run-up to EHEA's new deadline of 2030.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - As the volume and complexity of mental health needs of school-aged children has grown, the capacity of schools to meet those needs has been challenging at best. School closures and social isolation during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated disconcerting trends regarding levels of anxiety, depression, and suicidality in children and adolescents. As resources continue to be strained for many schools, innovative approaches to addressing school mental health are necessary. Promising Practices for Engaging Families and Communities around Mental Health in Schools is part of the Family School Community Partnership Issues series. This volume explores promising practices for engaging families and communities around mental health in schools. Through compelling case studies, it highlights collaborations that creatively engage systems of care to help schools respond to mental health concerns. This book also introduces new paradigms for whole child support within the school-family-community context. It offers thoughtful analysis of the ethical, policy, and practical tensions that arise when addressing mental health in partnership with families and communities. Promising Practices for Engaging Families and Communities around Mental Health in Schools is an essential resource for educators, mental health professionals, and policymakers seeking inclusive, collaborative solutions to today's school mental health challenges.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Filipino Americans have a long and rich history with and within the United States, and they are currently the second largest Asian group in the country. However, very little is known about how their historical and contemporary relationship with America may shape their psychological experiences. The most insidious psychological consequence of their historical and contemporary experiences is colonial mentality or internalized oppression. Some common manifestations of this phenomenon are described below: - Skin-whitening products are used often by Filipinos in the Philippines to make their skins lighter. Skin whitening clinics and businesses are popular in the Philippines as well. The 'beautiful' people such as actors and other celebrities endorse these skin-whitening procedures. Children are told to stay away from the sun so they do not get 'too dark.' Many Filipinos also regard anything 'imported' to be more special than anything 'local' or made in the Philippines. - In the United States, many Filipino Americans make fun of 'fresh-off-the-boats' (FOBs) or those who speak English with Filipino accents. Many Filipino Americans try to dilute their 'Filipino-ness' by saying that they are mixed with some other races. Also, many Filipino Americans regard Filipinos in the Philippines, and pretty much everything about the Philippines, to be of 'lower class' and those of the 'third world. The historical and contemporary reasons for why Filipino / Americans display these attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors - often referred to as colonial mentality - are explored in Brown Skin, White Minds. This book is a peer-reviewed publication that integrates knowledge from multiple scholarly and scientific disciplines to identify the past and current catalysts for such self-denigrating attitudes and behaviors. It takes the reader from indigenous Tao culture, Spanish and American colonialism, colonial mentality or internalized oppression along with its implications on Kapwa, identity, and mental health, to decolonization in the clinical, community, and research settings. This book is intended for the entire community - teachers, researchers, students, and service providers interested in or who are working with Filipinos and Filipino Americans, or those who are interested in the psychological consequences of colonialism and oppression. This book may serve as a tool for remembering the past and as a tool for awakening to address the present.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The Elektronisches Buch edition of this title is Open Access and freely available to read online. Though organizational scholarship traces its intellectual lineage from a diversity of sources, there is little doubt that in recent years a key divide has emerged amongst organization scholars and sociologists. For many, if not most, it has become unclear what role sociology is supposed to play in organization studies. Against this backdrop, the editors of Sociological Thinking in Contemporary Organizational Scholarship ask: what is 'organizational sociology' today This pathbreaking volume explores the new boundaries of organizational sociology to identify, discuss and challenge sociology's genuine contribution to organization studies. Mapping a community of scholars that transcends disciplinary limitations, chapters follow one simple epistemic logic: society happens in, between, across and around organizations. Breathing fresh life into a once lively dialogue on the social nature, characteristics and consequences of the field, this is a valuable resource for navigating of the varied sociological scholarship we witness amongst today's organization scholars.
