They vary greatly in age, experience, specialization and interests, giving us a representative cross-section of the extremely differentiated world of herpetology. These questions want to explore the lives of the interviewed, their jobs, and their activities in both the past and the present, the studies they have conducted, how their enthusiasm for herps was born, the difficulties they have encountered on their way and much more. They also have the goal of inducing the interviewee to tell us about their field trips, to provide young people wanting to become herpetologists with some advice, and to discover what is their idea of herpetology as well as what they think of herpetoculture. There are 143 species of dragonflies and damselflies in Europe and 39 of these are presently found on Corfu, giving the island one of the highest numbers of species in the Greek archipelago. New species have been added to the fauna quite recently, the Dainty Bluet (Coenagrion scitulum) and the Blue-eye (Erythromma lindenii) were re-ported for the first time in 2012. In addition, the Black Pennant (Selysiothemis nigra) was reported in 2007 and the Bladetail (Lindenia tetraphylla) in 2014, both most likely being recent arrivals to the island. Corfu also holds populations of the 'Critically Endangered' Greek Red Damsel (Pyrrhosoma elisabethae) and the 'Near Threatened' Eastern Spectre (Caliaeshna microstigma). The high precipitation and the rich presence of waterways, both permanent and temporary, have created a range of suitable habitats and are factors that can ex-plain the rich dragonfly fauna. However, the increase in the resident population and the growth in tourism, with close to two million visitors every year, have led to habitat loss, especially of coastal wetlands due to the development of hotels andother tourist venues. The increase in water consumption and the increase in the pollution of the island waters are factors that pose serious threats to the fauna in general and to the amphibious one in particular. The aim of this book is to raise the awareness and understanding of the dragonfly fauna, and to give a first idea of its status and need for protection. Information on identification, distribution and habitat for all the 43 reported species from Corfu is also presented. [9783899730401].

Alfred Russel Wallace described Java in his book The Malay Archipelago (1869) as ".the finest and most interesting tropical island in the world". Large tropical islands tend to have a diverse, and species-rich snake fauna. The snake fauna of Java contains 91 species in 13 families. The most recently described snakes from Java include the pipe snake Cylindrophis subocularis (2016), two species of Dendrelaphis (2008), the pit viper Trimeresurus insularis (1977), and the minute fossorial snake Calamaria lovii wermuthi (1965). This is surprisingonly five taxa of snakes described in the last half century from the 13th largest island on the planet. Of course there are several reasons for this. Relatively few people study Indonesian snakes, but more alarming is the fact that Java has a human population of more than 141 million or about 1026 humans/km . Looking at the list of Javan snakes today one can only wonder how many species of snakes were present when Wallace wrote that statement in 1869. I have little doubt environmental modifications by humans over the last century have reduced the snake diversity. At the same time many snakes may have either adapted to human modified environments or have successfully evaded the damaged environments and still survive somewhere on the islandwaiting to be discovered by science. This book is a first step in discovering new species of Javan snakes. Using this book the herpetologist or naturalist can readily identify all of the species known to occur on the island. Thus, snake enthusiasts will hopefully recognize species that are unknown when they are found. Ruud de Lang has compiled species accounts for all of the known snake taxa, provided details for identification and for the exploration of the background of the snake fauna as well. [9783899735253].

Israel's positioning at the juncture of Asia, and Africa, and between the Sahara and Arabian deserts in the south, and Mediterranean and mountain regions in the north, make it zoologically very diverse. It packs a variety of landscapes, habitats, vegetation types, and fauna, into a small and easily accessible area. The reptile fauna of Israel is species rich, with nearly 90 species, and highly diverse, with representatives of 25 families. All this wealth can be easily seen, and all is found, within half a day of driving from the main population hubs of the greater Tel Aviv area or Jerusalem. This makes Israel one of the most attractive destinations for reptile enthusiasts and professional herpetologists alike. Amphibians, on the other hand, are less diverse due to Israel's arid to semi-arid climate and are represented by a total of 8 species but again representing six families. This book presents up-to-date, useful information on the identification, taxonomic status, conservation needs, biogeography, life history, general biology, and potential risk to humans, of all species of reptiles and amphibians currently occurring in Israel: both land and sea, both native and introduced. It is Intended both as a field guide and as a source of data on the current status and biology of Israeli reptiles and amphibians, many of which occur in neighboring countries for which no updated field guides are currently available. The book details each species with an updated textual description, colorful images, and both local and global distribution maps. Species inhabiting sandy habitats are addressed in a special chapter detailing their tracks and how to read them, with the aid of text and photographs. In addition to its species coverage, this book also covers Israel's unique conservation issues, and surveys its diverse biogeographical habitats, and how they contribute to its rich herpetofauna.
