First edition of this important sinological imprint, unrestored in the original boards. Morrison wrote A View of China as both a standalone reference and to accompany his famous dictionary of Chinese. The printing process employed Chinese type specially cast in Macao using a hybrid English and Chinese method. The East India Comp…any's Macao press was established in 1814 with type and equipment brought from Europe and an initial investment of almost 15,000 pounds. Its first manager, Peter Perring Thoms (1791-1855), supervised the production of Morrison's dictionary over a seven-year period, during which he also undertook a number of side printing projects. For his many sinological contributions, Morrison deserves his reputation as "the chief person who opened to his countrymen the road to the knowledge of the language of China" (ODNB). After serving as the interpreter during Lord Amherst's abortive mission to Peking, he returned to Britain in 1824, bringing with him a substantial library that became the core of the collection at the School of Oriental and African Studies. Cordier 65; Löwendahl 793; Lust 126. Quarto, pp. ii (blank), vi, 141, 3 (blank). Diagrams and Chinese characters in text. Original boards, printed title label. Housed in custom black quarter imitation morocco slipcase and patterned cloth chemise. Light wear to spine and joints, foxing to end matter, all gatherings save first unopened: a well-preserved copy.

First Chinese edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the future governor of Hong Kong at the head of the title page, "The Revd. W. Dealtry, D.D., from the author." Dealtry, a fellow of the Royal Society from 1811, joined George Thomas Staunton, Malthus, and eight others in successfully proposing Davis for membership in 1822. A… considered analysis, Poeseos Sinensis Commentarii promotes the aesthetic merits of Chinese poetry in the face of European and American bias and allowed the author to demonstrate his "vast knowledge of classical Chinese and profound academic expertise" (Lan, p. 28). It was read to the Royal Asiatic Society on 2 May 1829 and printed in London soon after. Published five years later, this Macao edition also incorporates previously unpublished material: Davis's recollections of the 1816 Amherst embassy to Beijing and two examples of his prodigious scholarly output. In the last five decades, only one copy of the 1829 edition and one other example of this edition are recorded in commerce. Having joined the East India Company in 1813 as a writer based in Canton, Davis's linguistic abilities earned him a place in Lord Amherst's ultimately unsuccessful delegation. He carved out a reputation as a formidable scholar of Chinese, publishing literary translations in 1817 and 1822 and a Chinese lexicon in 1824. After further scholarly activity in the 1830s and early 1840s, he was appointed the second governor of Hong Kong in 1844 - a position he held for four years. William Dealtry (1775-1847) was the first professor of mathematics at East India College, Haileybury. Dealtry defended missionary groups, including the British and Foreign Bible Society (active in China from the 1830s), from criticisms by established church authorities. Bound with this edition is the text (but not the eight preliminary pages) from the first edition of Davis's Hien Wun Shoo: Chinese Moral Maxims, with a Free and Verbal Translation (1823). The combination appears to have been the work of the antiquarian Sir Thomas Phillipps, whose Middle Hill pressmark (XLIX.h.14) and notation is on the front pastedown. The volume was later sold at Sotheby's London, 6 March 1984, Lot 35. Cordier 1791; Löwendahl 896; Lust 1092. Lan Jiang, A History of Western Appreciation of English-translated Tang Poetry, 2018. Octavo (210 x 130 mm). Chinese characters in text. Recent light half calf to style, spine tooled in gilt, brown label, incorporating marbled sides from earlier binding, edges sprinkled black. Contemporary ink annotation and pressmark on front pastedown. Light rubbing, endpapers scuffed, text clean: very good.

First and sole edition of the earliest maritime regulations printed in India, detailing the day-to-day governance of the Bombay Marine, the East India Company's navy. Rare, with only two institutional locations recorded. Founded in 1612 and based successively at Surat and Bombay, the Marine became a principal instrument of Briti…sh expansion from the Red Sea to Southeast Asia, supporting major campaigns against the Marathas, the Mysore and Burmese states, and - most prominently - the Wahabi Qasimi confederation in the Gulf. Its squadron played a decisive role in the 1809 and 1819 operations culminating in the General Treaty of Peace, earning high praise from naval commanders and Governor Mountstuart Elphinstone. The Marine was equally important as a surveying body. These regulations illuminate the rigorous expectations placed on officers such as Blair, McCluer, Ross, and Brucks, whose coastal surveys from the Gulf to the China Seas underpinned British navigation for decades. The text formalizes command responsibilities, shipboard discipline, victualling and punishments, and mandates systematic hydrographic surveying, accompanied by 17 templates for logs and accounts. Issued under Henry Meriton, superintendent and commander of the Gulf Squadron, they reflect the Marine's transition into a permanently deployed regional force at a pivotal moment in Company rule. Guillemette Crouzet, Inventing the Middle East: Britain and the Gulf in the Age of Global Imperialism, 2022; Charles Rathbone Low, History of the Indian Navy (1613-1863), 1877; William Monk, "The Persian Gulf Squadron: British Hegemony in the Gulf?", Qatar Digital Library. Quarto (269 x 210 mm). pp. [iv], 130. With 17 tables, 5 of them folding. Neat 20th-century dark blue half calf, spine gilt lettered longitudinally, single blind rule to the spine and corners, marbled boards. Light staining to the margins of the title page, pale browning throughout, but very good copy.

First edition of this culturally significant Macao imprint, the first translation of a Cantonese literary work into English. Shipped from China on an East India Company vessel, copies of Thoms's translation spread from London across Europe and found an enthusiastic audience: in 1827, the 77-year-old Goethe spent almost half a ye…ar pouring over the copy in the library of the Duke of Sax-Weimar. The last traceable complete example appeared in commerce in 1988. Thoms (1791-1855) arrived in China in 1814, bringing with him moveable type and other equipment sent at the expense of the East India Company and needed to print Robert Morrison's landmark Dictionary of the Chinese Language. Over the next decade, despite the all-consuming nature of the Dictionary project, Thoms found time for research into bronze vessels, linguistics, and literary history. Chinese Courtship takes as it subject the 17th-century Hua Jian Ji, a 60-chapter poem telling the story of a young scholar and his love for two women. "Given that some of his social betters appear to have claimed that the Chinese have no poetry worth translating, Thoms also set out to vindicate the Chinese poetic tradition in the eyes of European sceptics" (p. 149). In this, he was successful. Chinese Courtship, and other translations that came in its wake, offered western readers new cultural touchstones from which to draw inspiration. The appendix, "On the Revenue of China", is a translation of a manuscript composed by a Chinese official in 1823. It includes figures for taxation and grain production, descriptions of the economic situation in different provinces, and details on civil service and military establishments. Cordier 1760; Löwendahl 1523; Lust 1104. Octavo (240 x 151 mm). Diagrams in text, Chinese characters on title page and in text. Contemporary polished calf, raised bands, black spine label, spine ruled in gilt, gilt frame on boards, board edges and turn-ins rolled in blind, brown surface-paper endpapers, edges sprinkled red. Contemporary bookseller's ticket of W. White, Piccadilly, on front pastedown. Light rubbing and marking to calf, top edge dusty, contents fresh: a fine copy.

First edition of this scarce early Macao imprint. Robert Morrison (1782-1834) was "the chief person who opened to his countrymen the road to the knowledge of the language of China" (ODNB), and his writings are cornerstones of any China library. Morrison joined the London Missionary Society in 1804 and sailed for Canton in early…1807. He initially faced opposition from the East India Company and the Portuguese authorities in Macao, so chose to live and conduct linguistic research secretly among American merchants. A transformation in the company's attitude provided the funding needed to print his A Grammar of the Chinese Language (1815), these Dialogues, and his landmark Chinese dictionary (1815-23). After serving as interpreter to Lord Amherst's abortive mission to Peking, Morrison returned to Britain in 1824, bringing with him a substantial library, which became the core of the collection at the School of Oriental and African Studies. Writing for Western merchants and their staff, he provides conversations suitable to common commercial and social situations. These allow the western student of Chinese to grasp commercial politeness ("If I buy dear, I shall loose [sic] instead of making any thing by it"), social chit-chat ("Had you a pleasant journey?"), and even flattery ("Your goodness, lofty as the mountain, and immense as the ocean, forms part of myself and will never be forgotten"). Bound with the Dialogues are first editions of four studies by the antiquarian Stephen Weston (1747-1830) - a man of "widespread learning" (ODNB) - who wrote around 50 books, including the first English translation of the Rosetta Stone. The works justify his accomplished status as a translator and cultural interlocutor: a) The Conquest of the Miao-Tse, an Imperial Poem by Kien-Lung Entitled a Choral Song of Harmony for the First Part of the Spring. London: Printed & Sold by C. & R. Baldwin, 1810. b) Fan-Hy-Cheu: A Tale, in Chinese and English: with Notes, and a Short Grammar of the Chinese Language. London: Printed for the Author; and Published by Robert Baldwin, 1814. c) Persian Distichs, from Various Authors, in which the Beauties of the Language are Exhibited in a Small Compass, and May by Easily Remembered. London: Printed for the Author; by S. Rousseau, 1814. d) Episodes from the Shah Nameh; or Annals of the Persian Kings; by Ferdoosee. Translated into English Verse, with Notes and Authorities, a Verbal Index, Persian and English, and Some Account of the Contents of the Whole Form. London: Printed for the Author, By C. Baldwin; Published by Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1815. Cordier 1641, 1769 & 1791; Löwendahl 745; Lust 1093 & 1106. Five works bound in one, octavo (233 x 143 mm). Chinese characters in text. Weston works on China with engraved title page and 11 engraved plates. Early 20th-century half calf, raised bands tooled with scrolling foliate rolls in gilt, second compartment lettered direct in gilt, marbled sides, renewed brown surface-paper endpapers, edges sprinkled brown. Binding sturdy, front board slightly bowed, sides and extremities worn, evidence of bookplate removed from front pastedown, Dialogues text clean bar black mark on a4 verso, Weston works with light foxing and toning, one plate bound upside down: a very good Sammelband, with the Dialogues in well-preserved condition.
