Hardback. Condición: Good. Winky Lewis and Susan Conley, a photographer and a writer in Portland, tried an experiment. At the start of every week for a year, Winky sent Susan a photograph: of their children, of the street where they live as neighbors, and of other green places in Maine. By the end of that week Susan sent a tiny story back that talked to the photograph. Stop Here, This Is The Place tells the story of a year in which children's arms and legs get longer, and traces of babyhood fade--a year that feels interminable to a ten-year-old looking forward and fleeting to that ten-year-old's mother, who can always stop here, go back and remember. This delightfully evocative gift book is a reminder to stop and enjoy the precious time we have with our kids while we have them. Through Susan's recollections of moments from her childhood and the ongoing lives of her children, we're reminded of our own childhoods, and of the necessity to stop and pay attention, to hold on.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Mainers on the Titanic traces the stories of passengers on that fateful ship who had ties to Maine. Many of them were wealthy summer visitors to Bar Harbor, but there were other residents of state aboard as well. Their tales are retold, along with what was occurring in the state at the time. Meticulously researched, this book reveals the agonizing day-to-day wait of Mainers for news of what really happened and tells the stories of Maine passengers from their boarding to the sinking and rescue, and, for those who survived, of their final coming ashore in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It's a unique and fascinating addition to the Titanic story.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. Tim Cotton has been a police officer for more than thirty years. The writer in him has always been drawn to the stories of the people he has met along the way. Dealing with the standard issue ne'er-do-wells as a patrol officer, homicide detective, polygraph examiner, and later as the lieutenant in charge of the criminal investigation division certainly provides an interesting backdrop--but more often he writes about the regular folks he encounters, people who need his help, or those who just want to share a joke or even a sad story. The Detective in the Dooryard is composed of stories about the people, places, and things of Maine. There are sad stories, big events, and even the very mundane, all told from the perspective of a seasoned police office and in the wry voice of a lifelong Mainer. Many of the stories will leave you chuckling, some will invariably bring tears to your eyes, but all will leave you with a profound sense of hope and positivity.…

After all her hard work collecting the town's garbage and plowing the roads, Grandma deserves a day off-and what better day than Labor Day. But what happens when the waves get choppy, the fog rolls in, and all the boats are in difficulty? Can Grandma take the helm and get the lobsters back to shore in time? More great fun as our intrepid heroine is again placed at the center of small town life and in the middle of a local celebration. Huntington, Amy (ilustrador).…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Rosa Fleming motors her way to Bennett's Island in the dark of the night, fleeing her divorce, her philandering husband and the gossipmongers of her hometown. On the Island she discovers not only a refuge to heal her emotional wounds, but also a community that nurtures her battered confidence and a man who teaches her to love and be loved as an equal. When a fight breaks out between the island's lobstermen and the invading fishermen who disregard the island's longstanding customs, Rosa steps into the struggle and saves a man's life. She blooms in the crisis, but her growth may be at the expense of her fledgling romance. Strawberries in the Sea is a story of self-discovery and rejuvenation, as a sad insecure woman realizes her own inner beauty and personal strengths. Elizabeth Ogilvie transports her readers to another time and place as she infuses her characters with the convictions of real and powerful human emotions and spins her tale with tenderness and keen sensitivity. Bennett's Island breathes off the page of the book with the vitality and depths of its inhabitants. At turns lyric, uplifting and romantic The Strawberries in the Sea, the final book of the Lover's Trilogy, renews faith in the power of community and inspires yearning for a simpler bygone era.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. On November 12, 1971, Bernard Patterson, a much decorated Vietnam War hero turned real-life version of Don Quixote, Butch Cassidy, and Robin Hood all rolled into one, robbed the Northern National Bank in Mars Hill, Maine. He escaped with $110,000; at the time, the largest bank robbery in the history of the state. A tunnel rat and paratrooper in Vietnam who rose to the rank of sergeant, he was awarded four bronze stars and recommended for a silver star for valor. He returned home to northern Maine broke and disillusioned. Wearing dark glasses, dressed in a Marx Brother?s ankle length coat and wearing a blue wig, he robbed the bank, even though he was recognized by the elderly teller. He initially escaped by paddling a rubber raft down the Prestile Stream. This was the beginning of a comic, outrageous, implausible journey that took him across the United States, then to Europe and North Africa before finally surrendering to authorities in Scotland Yard after he had spent most of the money. Along the way, he lived a raucous life of wine and women while hobnobbing in aristocratic hangouts and giving money to those he perceived to be in need; all the time staying just a heartbeat ahead of law enforcement officials. He motor biked across Europe, hoodwinked border officials, bought a camel and got lost in the North African desert. Returned to the United States for prosecution, he was convicted and imprisoned. Released several years later, he moved back to northern Maine, where he continued to lead a reckless life that included running a ?pot farm,? until he died at age 56 in 2003. When asked by a friend why he had robbed the bank, he responded, ?The VA wouldn?t give me a loan, so I decided to take one out on my own..…

Hardback. Condición: Good. What?s for lunch when you?re in Maine in the summer? What else but the ubiquitous lobster roll. Nearly every café, diner, dive, and gourmet restaurant offers their version of this sandwich (even McDonald?s adds one to their menu every summer) and chefs delight in adding their own spin on this classic comfort food. Down East magazine has scoured the state and come up with the 75 best lobster rolls to be had anywhere. Each is ranked and paired with a brief write-up and directions to the eatery, including some recommendations of toppings, sides, desserts, or other delights that might pair nicely with the main course. Rounding it all out are helpful tips, such as the best way to eat a lobster roll (they can be rather messy), an occasional recipe, and fun facts and trivia?did you know record for the biggest lobster roll ever made is held by Portland? In 2009 the city baked a 61ft, 9½ inch roll and stuffed it with 45 pounds of lobster meat. It may not be the only food guide you grab when you come to Maine, but it?s guaranteed to be the most fun.…

Hardback. Condición: Very Good. Joshua Davis and Bruno Tropeano, two guys right out of college, felt that something was amiss. People in Maine created some of the best of everything in the world -- higher education, ships, television doctors, winter boots. But the gelato of which they dreamt could not be found here in Maine, or anywhere else in the United States. Josh and Bruno sensed both a responsibility and an opportunity and set off to rediscover the lost art. Imagining a long-forgotten Red Spoon Society of superior gelato artisans, they learned the techniques and practices of the old masters of gelato. They used those techniques as a foundation for creating an even better gelato experience: make lots of creative flavors for discerning guests, serve them in a way that invites discovery and delight, and never compromise on quality. In 2007, the doors to their first gelato store opened. Josh and Bruno named it Gelato Fiasco as a hedge against trend-pursuers, treasure hunters, and impostors, for only a true food lover, guided by his or her own sense of adventure, would dare enter a store with that name. And as they loved it, they would share with their families and friends, who would share with theirs. Gelato Fiasco is a book brimming with humor, Maine values, mouth-watering color photographs, and, most importantly, delicious recipes (out of 1500 in the flavor vault the book will include 100 or so) for making your own gelato at home, plus recipes sauces, cones, and other treats to enjoy with your gelato.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Maine has a rich supernatural history and ghost stories from the state are as varied as they are prolific. Freelance writer and reporter Tom Verde first became interested in such eerie occurrences while researching first-hand encounters with ghosts for a series of public radio programs. This book recounts some of the spine-tingling tales he uncovered in his research, including: -The dagger-wielding shade who terrorized a Portland couple -The murdered Indian who revisited Means's Tavern -Famed diva Lillian Nordica, whose voice still echoes through the Farmington auditorium named in her honor -The hostile spirit who tried to frighten the tenants out of an Orrington house -Even an entire phantom ship, bound eternally for Freeport These are not fictitious creations of literary imagination. People from all walks of life--including many who were positive they would never believe in ghosts--attest to these encounters.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. On February 24, 1838, Maine Congressman Jonathan Cilley was killed in Maryland by another Congressman from Kentucky in one of the last duels to take place in the United States. At the time, dueling was not illegal, but still Cilley's death was a shock to the nation. Before the duel, fought with rifles at less than one hundred paces, Cilley is believed to have said, New England must not be trampled on. He fought for the honor of his name, the honor of his home state, and the stout patriotism he held all his life. This revealing biography considers Cilley's short life: his early years in New Hampshire, his time at Bowdoin College and his friendship with Nathaniel Hawthorn, his marriage and political life, the events that caused him to accept the duel challenge, and the duel itself, with its tragic aftermath. It also provides an intriguing look into the politics of nineteenth century America. …

Paperback. Condición: Good. A young boy nearly paralyzed in a car accident runs for the first time in his life during a baseball game. A refugee family from despoiled East Africa plays soccer in my suburban backyard on Thanksgiving Day. A group of college boys is challenged to a game of basketball against the women s varsity team in an empty gym, then another on a tough inner city court. I hit the first homerun of my life when I am thirty-three years old. This is No Ordinary Game. This is a book of pure inspiration. Many of the sporting world s most profound achievements and displays of humanity are never recorded. They happen on sandlots, asphalt, and backyards. Stories of well-known athletes and teams abound in popular literature what is missing is an exaltation of the moments that can happen to any of the rest of us - and do. No Ordinary Game is the grandstand for everyday miracles. This is an inspirational book that shows how any one of us can transcend possibility or lighten life s burdens simply by picking up a ball. It is a collection of poignant memoirs of games played without grandstands. Some of the stories relive everyday miracles, while others find the souls of players ascending into the spirits of the games they play. They tell of the glory, despair, and humanity that can be found any afternoon or evening, at any playground, gym, or empty field. The tone is frequently humorous, but the tenor is deeply and genuinely human. While the primary themes involve overcoming impossible odds, secondary themes focus on overcoming common misperceptions. Throughout the narrative, these pieces explore racial and gender divides (including a history of violent separatism) with subtlety, grace, realization, respect, and the common language of competition. The vantage point is wholly familiar, yet new and fresh. My voice is that of a mediocre athlete who can hold his own (but to save his life cannot run fast), and whose sensibilities ignite when the game is on. This familiarity and intensity let readers watch and play at the same time, and hardly notice the difference. Something in each chapter has happened to them, too, and is worth remembering.…
