The energy source for sonar is sound and its characteristic and parameters are medium dependent; an understanding of sound propagation in sea medium is essential. The interferences in the sea are severe. For surveillance application and parameter estimation, high processing gain is essential. The spatial, spectral, and temporal characteristics of reverberation and noise are essential for designing processor to have high processing gain. All these aspects are discussed in this book. Sonar equation and its dependence on system, medium and target parameters as well as its limitation are explained to help the designer in basic design evaluation of sonar performance. Important aspects of transducer and sensors arrays to design and select a proper array are covered. Some of the important areas in sonar design are signal design, spatial and temporal processing, parameter estimation, normalisation and data fusion. The main considerations in signal design and signal processing are also covered. It includes optimum estimator, various normalisation schemes and simple linear data fusion techniques. Important applications of underwater acoustic are highlighted. Finally, the book concludes with a typical sonar design and its evaluation method.".

In this monograph, nearly all types of unconventional lasers including… x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs), GaSb-based type-I diode lasers, photonic crystal-based lasers, phase conjugated lasers, quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), and diode pumped fiber lasers, have been covered. All these types of lasers are having many useful applications in various fields like industry, surgery, biology, and novel imaging techniques, apart from their usage in practical research applications in most of the scientific and engineering topics. In the field of medicine, these lasers are applied on several areas, including dermatology, in which they are used to skin tone more even. The phase conjugated lasers are very useful for certain applications like nullifying the optical distortion and also achieving some novel characteristics of the lasers. The fiber laser along with the Raman converter module is capable of the efficient spectral conversion of its unique combined ultra-short radiation pulses into longer-wavelength spectral domain of 1150 to 1550 nm. Tourmaline Ytterbius-1100 has many applications like time-resolved spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, micro- and nano-photonics, supercontinuum generation, fluorescence-lifetime imaging microscopy, and optical DNA sensing technology. The unconventional lasers based on photonic crystals are very useful for certain applications like data storage, biomedical applications, and display technologies. GaSb-based type-I diode lasers operating in the optical spectral region ≥ 3µm are very useful for a variety of applications including trace gas sensing, free-space optical communications, and infrared countermeasures. Higher powers from femtosecond fiber lasers have become very useful for a variety of applications including laser processing, medical bio-optics, and opto-electronics The Random lasers have also been drawing the attention of various researchers because of their unique theory, fabrication, and properties. It has important applications in the systems requiring high image quality, e.g., airport security. Raman lasers, spin lasers, and ultrafast mid-IR lasers are also useful in research and other upcoming fields. The amazingly high intensities of XFLEs have led to their great application in the highly specialised areas of scientific research. This monograph provides useful information on these topics, especially from the research point of view. This monograph provides the technical analysis of the theoretical aspects of lasers along with the modeling and designing considerations for maximising the efficiency of these lasers. Along with these some related experimental results available in the literature have been presented to make the presentation clear and meaningful.

"Steels for several high-technology applications, such as military hardware and aerospace, need to possess ultrahigh strength (UHS; minimum yield strength of 1380 MPa (200 ksi)) coupled with high fracture toughness in order to meet the requirement… of minimum weight while ensuring high reliability. Broadly, there are four classes of UHS steels: (a) low-alloy steels typified by AISI 4340, (b) high-alloy maraging steels typified by 18Ni1700 steel, (c) high-alloy secondary hardening steels typified by AF1410, and (d) carbide-free bainitic steels. Distinctive characteristics of the UHS low-alloy, maraging, secondary hardening and bainitic steels have been presented in the monograph. In such applications, though performance of materials is of prime consideration, cost and availability make low-alloy steels an attractive option. However, the use of low-alloy steels has often been limited by their low fracture toughness. A comprehensive research programme was launched at the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) during mid-1980s to develop a cost effective low-alloy alternative to the highly alloyed 18Ni1700 maraging steel. The monograph describes the more than three decades of R&D work that led to the research-based development of a new UHS low-alloy steel, designated DMR-1700, its production and its defence applications. The strength and toughness combination of DMR-1700 steel is better than the best reported values of low-alloy steels AISI 4340, 300M and D6ac, and is comparable to that of 18Ni1700 maraging steel. Given this result, DMR-1700 steel has been successfully demonstrated for (a) one-to-one replacement of maraging steel for missile casings, (b) substantial reduction of weight of the base plate for 120 mm long range mortar and (c) superior ballistic performance for armour applications. To address cost effectiveness of DMR-1700, DMRL pursued ladle refining and vacuum degassing + continuous casting route and found that the steel met the chemistry and properties successfully.".
