Peter Quennell has been fascinated by the subject of happiness since early childhood, when he first sought to understand its meaning, and to establish whether or not anyone ever actually attained it. Studying the lives and works of creative artists from the Old Stone Age to the present day, this book analyzes how individual men and women have been inspired by this universally shared human pursuit. Is happiness a natural human right, as Jean-Jacques Rousseau insisted, or is it, to borrow Samuel Johnson's formula, a transitory boon? In a profound, beautifully written meditation, Quennell shows that every age reinvents happiness in its own image: for the Romantics, contentment meant a voyage of self-discovery; to the Victorians, it was tied to the march of material progress; in modern times, an immense variety of marketable diversions competes for our attention. Melancholy dreamers like Turgenev, Baudelaire and Byron looked back to a happier, ideal past; in contrast, diarist Samuel Pepys proved that one can be relentlessly introspective but still find happiness by taking satisfaction in each day's events. Quennell, noted critic and biographer of Byron and Pope, reminds us that the road to happiness more often lies in quiet observation and enjoyment than in grand schemes or riches. Yet these graceful essays, to be savored slowly, are never didactic. The author's previous books include biographies of Byron and Alexander Pope and "Four Portraits".

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. THE GOLD KEY AND THE GREEN LIFE: SOME FANTASIES AND CELTIC TALES, George MacDonald and Fiona Macleod, collected and edited by Elizabeth Sutherland, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, 1st edition, 1986. BOOK CONDITION: fine. The text block is in fi…ne condition, with no tears, dog ears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The gray cloth boards are in near fine condition. The dust jacket is in near fine condition except for used bookstore price tag from 1992 affixed to front cover. 8 ¾ x 5 ½, 222 pages, 15 ounces. XX (From the dust jacket flaps) George MacDonald and Fiona Macleod are two superb writers of Celtic myth and fantasy, whose works today are virtually unobtainable. This book, selected and introduced by Elizabeth Sutherland, contains stories and extracts from their longer writings which give the flavour and reflect the principal themes of these two extraordinary and gifted writers. Both died in 1905, both were deeply attracted by Celtic myth — but apart from that they were very different. George MacDonald was born in 1824 and lived a life of great poverty as an occasional preacher and lecturer, coping with bouts of tuberculosis. He is best known for his children's books, such as The Back of the North Wind and The Princess and Curdie, and for his theological meditations. But he was admired during his lifetime as a poet and writer by such distinguished figures as Ruskin, Lewis Carroll, Emerson and Mark Twain; and more recently by Chesterton, C.S. Lewis and Tolkien. Fiona Macleod is not a woman but a man — William Sharp, born in 1855. A Gaelic-speaking nurse and a Celtic fisherman were his main childhood influences, but the need to earn a living kept the psychic and visionary side of his nature in the background for many years. In 1893 'Fiona Macleod' emerged with a surge of creative mystical writing, but the secret of her identity was a closely guarded secret during Sharp's lifetime. She was much admired by W.B. Yeats among others. Elizabeth Sutherland, who provides the introductory biography that precedes the selection of each author's work, is author of many novels and, most recently, of a study of the phenomenon of Highland second sight, Ravens and Black Rain. Elizabeth Sutherland is the author of five novels: Lent Term, The Seer of Kintail, Hannah Hereafter, The Eye of God, and The Weeping Tree. She has also edited and introduced The Prophecies of the Brahan Seer by Alexander Mackenzie.
