Añadir al carrito2 works in 1 volume, the first in 3 parts. First edition of the collected poems by one of the most important poets of the second generation of the Dutch Golden Age. Jeremias de Decker (1609-1666) was a follower of the great poets of the Dutch Golden Age. His household poems (so-called "huizelijke poëzie", or domestic poetry) of which De Decker was one of the first practitioners, are considered his best work.Ad 2: Second edition of a satirical work on avarice, for the first time published in 1667; a third edition appeared in 1702. The work is based on Erasmus's Praise of Folly in Westerbaen's translation, and also includes a poem in praise of one of Rembrandts paintings. With a contemporary annotation on the first free flyleaf (the title repeated), dated 8 May 1660, and a 19th-century annotation on the back pastedown ("Ex libris P. N. Zopore(?) P.J.F. 1864"). The vellum is somewhat soiled, the shelf mark label on the spine has been torn in half. The frontispiece has been pasted to a stub, the fore edge margins of the first few quires are slightly water stained, not affecting the text, the edges of the woodcut vignette on the title page have been perforated, which is only visible on the verso. Otherwise in good condition.l Ad 1: NNBW, 1, cols. 691-693; STCN 852562489; USTC 1844953; ad 2: STCN 101201532; USTC 1827359; cf. Winkel, J. te., Ontwikkelingsgang der Ned. Letterkunde, 2 (1908), pp. 314ff. Contemporary vellum over boards, sewn on 3 supports laced through the joints, with the manuscript author and title on the spine, and a round shelf mark label, red and blue sprinkled edges. Añadir al carritoFirst and only edition of Herckmans's Der zee-vaert lof (In praise of sea voyages), in Dutch, with one of the very few book illustrations by the great painter and etcher Rembrandt van Rijn (1606/07-1669), here in one of the "early impressions" noted by New Hollstein. The book itself is also of interest, with a long verse poem in six books in honour of voyages from Noah's time to 1632 in chronological order, with extensive marginal annotations, including voyages by Columbus and the other great explorers venturing east, west and to the Arctic. It forms a complete maritime history. It is followed by a short (9-page) poem in honour of ship travel on the Dutch rivers, with drop-title "Rhyn en Mase schip-vaerts lof", then a 1-page poem in honour of Cornelis Jansz de Haen in 1633. The preliminaries contain additional short poems and a 6-page note to the reader by the author, as well as laudatory verses by Barlaeus, Boxhoorn, Revius, Scriverius and others. The author, Elias Herckmans (1596-1644), was a naval officer-poet who had a successful maritime career, taking part in the famous expedition by the Dutch to Brazil in 1641, and ending as a vice-admiral. Basse's illustrations also deserve praise, though overshadowed by Rembrandt. Sabin quotes Stevens noting all "eighteen exquisite etchings". But the work is primarily and justly famous for containing one of the six etchings Rembrandt made especially as and appearing as book illustrations (in 3 books). New Hollstein locates only 1 copy of the Rembrandt print in its first state, preceding its appearance in the book, but it notes that "early impressions" of the second state still show the horizontal scratch across the mast and flag, which was already present in the first state but gradually wore away as the plate was printed in its second state. It is still very clear in the present copy, indicating that it is an early impression. As always in this state, Rembrandt's name has been partly burnished away, but in this copy it remains partly visible. With the bookplate of Bob Luza (1893-1980), a notable Dutch Jewish collector, on the front pastedown. Manuscript annotation in brown ink on both pastedowns. Light worming throughout in the inner margin, only affecting the text block slightly on I1-K3 and T1-X3 and the etching on H4. Large repair on I4 and smaller repairs on E2, E3, F3, F4, G1, I1, I4, K1, K4, Aa3, Aa4, and Hh1. Missing bottom corner on L2 and L3. Light water damage in upper margin. Otherwise in very good condition.l Borba de Moraes, pp. 398-399; Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) I, Basse 49-65; Sabin 31476; STCN 842404627; USTC 1030006; not in Cat. Contemporary sheepskin parchment, sewn on 5 vellum tapes, red sprinkled edges, with the title in manuscript on the spine. With a letterpress half-title, a splendid engraved allegorical title page with Neptune and numerous other figures (title on a cloth held by 4 putti with classical attributes and an armillary sphere), and 18 large engraved and etched illustrations in text (11.5 x 16.5 cm), including an original etching by Rembrandt: an allegorical scene of the "Ship of Fortune", with a nude figure of Fortune standing in a small sail boat, made for the book, signed "Rembrandt f. 1633". The other illustrations are by Willem Basse. Further with numerous woodcut decorated initials (4 series). Set in roman types by Nicolaes Briot with incidental italic. Pages: [20], 236, [8] pp.…

Añadir al carrito3 parts in 1 volume. Beautifully illustrated large folio Dutch States Bible (Statenbijbel) with 6 six maps, including a world map. They belong to the larger of two series by Daniël Stoopendaal, first published in 1702 and revised in the plates for the present Bible. They were explicitly made for the Keur Bibles with, for example, Bible scenes (rather than figures from classical mythology) decorating the world map. The world map shows two hemispheres, a copernican solar system in the upper and a ptolemaic in the lower smaller circle. The four continents are symbolically represented in the four corners. Some of the maps with some small tear along the folds and lacking one engraved plate; hinges damaged at the ends; generally in good condition.l Darlow & Moule 3337; Poortman & Augusteijn, pp. 193-203 (G II, 2nd state, maps 1-6); Poortman, Bijbel en prent, pp. 172-176. Añadir al carritoLaudatory poem in praise of the new stadholder William IV also known as Willem Karel Hendrik Friso of Orange-Nassau (1711-1751), son of Johan Willem Friso, stadholder of Friesland and Groningen, who drowned at Moerdijk in the year of Willem Karel's birth. The family tree on the engraved title-page shows the coats of arms of the successors to the houses of Orange (left) and Nassau (right) and their wives, both beginning with William of Nassau (1487-1559) and his wife Juliana van Stolberg, the parents of William the Silent, and ending with Willem Karl and his wife. The poem celebrates the fact that Willem Karel, having already inherited the stadholdership of Friesland, Groningen and Drente from his father, and being stadholder of Gelderland since 1720, was proclaimed stadholder of all seven provinces of the Republic in May 1747, after the French had invaded Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Brabant and had captured Maastricht and Breda. The Van Damme bindery in Amsterdam was one of the best and most important bindries of it time and remained active from ca. 1747 to 1786.In very good condition and with large margins. The binding is chipped at the head of the spine, slightly worn along the hinges and shows other minor surface damage (some restored), slightly affecting 1 cornerpiece and some corners of the outer border, but remains generally in very good condition.l Atlas van Stolk 3576 (plate only, erroneously dated 1734); STCN (3 copies, including 1 lacking the title-page); not in Muller, Historieplaten; for the binding: Storm van Leeuwen, Dutch decorated bookbinding, I (2006), pp. 460-96, esp. 485 (roll V), p. 491 (tools 126 & 141) and p. 494 (stamp C: Athena). Añadir al carritoFirst Dutch edition of John Reynolds's collection of thirty dramatic tales of passion, crime and murder, regarded as an early example of true crime writing. The stories include adultery, jealousy, duels, poisoning and murder, but the perpetrators are always discovered and punished by divine justice. The work is illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and 30 full-page plates, one for each story. The present edition is scarce, with only three copies recorded in libraries.John Reynolds (dates unknown) was born in Exeter and worked as a merchant. He travelled to France, Spain and probably Italy, where he collected the stories that make up his six-volume The triumphs of Gods revenge against the crying and execrable sinne of murther. In his preface Reynolds responds to accusations that he had merely translated French and Italian tales, maintaining that he wrote the stories from memory after hearing them during his travels. His work appeared in parts from 1622 onwards and was first collected in one volume in 1635. The present edition is the first Dutch translation. A second, independent Dutch translation appeared in Rotterdam in 1668, only a year later, testifying to the popularity of true crime in the seventeenth-century Netherlands. The translator, Johannes Grindal (1617-1696), studied at the Athenaeum Illustre in Amsterdam under Vossius and Barlaeus and later worked as an apothecary and medical practitioner. He was also an active member of the Mennonite Church in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. According to Cornelis W. Schoneveld, Grindal made numerous alterations and removed some of Reynolds's stylistic mannerisms, resulting in a translation that Schoneveld considered even better than the English original. With two 20th-century owner's inscriptions on the first flyleaf. Añadir al carritoVery rare early Amsterdam edition of a devotional treatise by one of the famous theologians and mystics of the fifteenth-century Low Countries, Dionysius the Carthusian (Denys van Rijkel or van Leeuwen, ca. 1402/03-1471), who was given the title "Doctor ecstaticus". Written as a dialogue between a righteous man and a sinner, the work discusses sin, repentance and the sinner's return to God, divided in eleven articles. The present edition is illustrated with two woodcuts and is one of the earliest illustrated works printed in Amsterdam. The Tractatus de conversione peccatoris, also known as the Speculum conversionis peccatorum, was first printed in Aalst by Dirk Martens and Johannes of Westfalia in 1473, the first book printed in the Southern Netherlands. A Dutch translation, Die spieghel der bekeeringhen der sondaren, was first published by Gerard Leeu in Antwerp in 1488. The present Amsterdam edition is undated and printed without a printer's name. Moes attributed it to Hugo Jansz van Woerden, while Burger assigned it to either Doen Pietersz or Pieter Jansz Tyebaut, an attribution followed by Nijhoff-Kronenberg. The work was printed at the expense of Johannes Gerardi, who was a priest in Leiderdorp from at least 1494.Dionysius was born near St. Truiden and attended the well-known Latin school in Zwolle, the centre of the Windesheim Congregation and the Devotio Moderna. There, he studied philosophy and became acquainted with the principles and practice of religious life, which the rector, John Cele, himself taught. After his studies at the University of Cologne he entered the Carthusian monastery at Roermond, Limburg, in 1424. A synthesizer of earlier theological thought, he wrote over 150 works, including commentaries on the entire Bible and more than 900 sermons. He is considered the last great Scholastic author. The boards are somewhat warped. The leaves are slightly browned with an occasional water stain. Otherwise in very good condition.l Hain 6247; Moes-Burger, Amsterdamsche boekdrukkers, I, no. 23, pp. 23-25, and IV, pp. 378ff; Nijhoff-Kronenberg 715 (5 copies, including the present one, formerly in the Parochial Library 't Kalf, Zaandam); Peddie, II, 220; STCN 100940765 (2 copies); USTC 425038 (4 copies); cf. woodcuts not recorded in Nijhoff, L'Art typogr. First edition of a posthumously published satirical poem on the praise of money in the manner of Erasmus' Lof der zotheid (Praise of Folly), by one of the most important poets of the second generation of the Dutch Golden Age. Lof der Geldzucht, one of the most important works by Jeremias de Decker (1609-1666) is preceded by memorial contributions of his brother D. De Decker, Joan Blasius etc. De Decker knew the work by Erasmus of 1509 and also its Dutch translation from 1659, by his friend Jacob Westerbaen. The work was reprinted several times and was translated in German. The second part, Vervolg der rijm-oeffeningen, contains a selection of posthumous laudatory and occasional poems. As a friend of Rembrandt, De Decker planned to write a collection of poems praising his paintings, but was never able to finish the work. The present work, however, includes a poem praising Rembrandt's Christ and Maria Magdalen. Rembrandt painted a portrait of De Decker, now in The Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The binding shows mild traces of use. The front pastedown is detached from the board, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. Otherwise in good condition.l Kalff IV, 444; Molhuijsen-Blok, I, 691; STCN 850333229 (6 copies); USTC 1804334 (5 copies). Añadir al carritoFirst Dutch edition, newly and extensively illustrated, of a famous encyclopaedia of iconology, the Iconologia of Cesare Ripa (1560-1645). It describes about 650 symbolic human or semi-human figures, illustrates nearly 200, and was intended as a guide for all kinds of artists, writers, orators and amateurs. In the present 1644 edition the Amsterdam publisher, bookseller and poet Dirck Pietersz. Pers (1581-1659) translated and edited Ripa's text and Castellini's additions and made further additions of his own. He also included 196 woodcut illustrations cut for this edition based on a selection of those in the 1630 edition. It was in this form that Ripa's work was best known to artists in the Dutch golden age and it remained in use by painters and designers for the decorative arts far into the 18th century. With water stains throughout, serious in the first few and last few leaves, and marginal tears or restorations in a few leaves, but still in good condition and with large margins. The binding is uniformly abraded but structurally sound. An important source of knowledge and inspiration for artists of the Dutch golden age.l Landwehr, Emblem books Low Countries 683; Praz, p. 474; STCN 843273992; USTC 1030252. Añadir al carrito2 volumes. First French edition of an account on Arabia, translated from the German (Reisebeschreibung nach Arabien und anderen umliegenden Ländern, 1774) by F.L. Mourier. The title-pages are dated 1776-80; the colophons 1775-79. The famous account of the Royal Danish Expedition (1761-67) to the Middle East, Egypt, Persia and India, the first scientific expedition to this area. Niebuhr's "work on Arabia was the first European attempt at a complete account of Arabia, its people and their way of life. He amassed a vast quantity of factual information which he relates in a simple unrhetorical fashion, distinguishing clearly between things observed personally and things learned from others. The expedition, which lasted 6 years, was sponsored by the Danish King [Frederik V], and included the brilliant Swedish scientist, Peter Forsskal, who died while in Yemen" (Cat. Sotheby's, 13 Oct 1998, lot 1010). Of the five scientists, Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) was the sole survivor, and his work represents an important contribution to the study of the Middle East. His map of the Yemen, the first exact map of the area ever, remained the standard for the next 200 years.Old stamps erased from title pages (leaving insignificant water stains), otherwise in fine condition and in immaculate contemporary French bindings. Añadir al carrito4 parts in 1 work. Rare Dutch translation of this popular work on sorcery and witchcraft, magic potions, the power of imagination on (imagined) diseases, and more. The first edition was published in 1638 but this edition includes a treatise on invulnerability in war, a magic salve for the treatment of wounds and a refutation of Paracelsus. Another issue appeared in the same year, published in Amsterdam by J.F. Stam. The present work is a selection of theories from the works of Daniel Sennertus (1572-1637), taken from several original Latin editions. Sennertus was one of the leading physicians of his day, respected and honoured all over Europe. He was the first to introduce chemistry at the University of Wittenberg (Germany), where he was professor of medicine from 1602 on. The author of a considerable amount of scientific and medical works, the ideas of Sennertus were never thoroughly treated. In his works a valuable survey is given of scientific and medical literature from the 16th and the early 17th century, although his frequent use of quotes from other writers was reason to accuse him of plagiarism. Sennertus can be considered a sceptical believer in occultism. Daniel Jonctys (1600-1654), who was the translator of the present work, touches in the preface on the subject of people's naive belief in occultism. He holds Sennertus's work to be a valuable weapon in the battle against harmful superstitious beliefs. But even a sceptic like Sennertus was convinced of the existence of occult qualities, and stated that it was possible for diseases to be caused by witchcraft. Sennertus even described how soldiers could make themselves invulnerable to weapons by carrying occult signs with (or on) them, and how this was supposedly effective. With manuscript parchment waste used to reinforce the binding at the head and foot of the spine, visible between the paste-downs and the first free flyleaf and leaf Y2 at both ends of the book. With the green and white bookplate of the Buijnsters-Smets collection on the front paste-down. The binding shows slight signs of wear, lacking the final blank flyleaf. The engraved title-page has been reinforced by a thin paper strip mounted on the outer edge of the verso. Occasionally very slightly foxed and slightly browned along the edges. Otherwise in good condition.l Krivatsy 10958; Poggendorff II, pp.907-908; STCN 170560392; cf. Caillet 10145 (latin ed.); Scheepers I, 571 (1638 ed.) Waller 1541 (1638 ed). Añadir al carritoA sumptuously executed wedding album presented to the Dutch groom August Janssen (1865-1918) and his bride Ella de Ridder (1877-1951), produced in honour of their wedding celebrations which took place on 24-26 August 1896 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Most of the album concerns their "Polterabend", the wedding-eve party similar to present-day bachelor-/bachelorette parties except for the bride and groom joining together in the festivities. The main event now associated with a Polterabend is the smashing of porcelain by the wedding guests in order to bring luck to the couple's marriage, but in general the evening is filled with plays and songs written and performed for the couple by their family and friends.A few performing actors were members of the Janssen-family, a Dutch business family who had amassed their fortune with the tobacco cultivation in the former Dutch East Indies. They were also known for their generosity and philanthropic activities in the Netherlands. At the head of this family was the German-Dutch merchant Peter Wilhelm Janssen (1821-1903), one of the founders of the Deli Maatschappij in Sumatra and father of the groom, who was his second son. His eldest son Christian Wilhelm Janssen (1860-1927) was married to Susanna Dorothea Anna Rehbock (1862-1933). Her brother, the Dutch merchant Heinrich Carl Rehbock (1865-1938) was married to Caroline Janssen (1871-1951), one of the five daughters of Peter Wilhelm Janssen. Among the other actors were the brother of the bride Gustave von Ridder (1874-1956), the German playwright Hermann Otto Rudolf Presber (1868-1935), the German lawyer Paul Roediger (1859-1938) and his Dutch wife Julie Louise Charlotte Elink Schuurman (1875-1961), the sisters Anna Maria Humser (1876-1974) and Elisabeth (Else) Humser (1872-1967), daughters of the German lawyer and politician Gustav Adolph Humser (1836-1918), who was chairman of the Frankfurt city council at the time of the wedding celebration. The groom August Janssen (1864-1918) started his business career at trade offices in Bremen and London. He subsequently left for the former Dutch East Indies where he founded several enterprises. His wealth enabled him to engage in philanthropic activities. For example the municipality of Baarn benefited from his generosity, he erected two public swimming pools there at his own expense. The bride Ella (Elisabeth) de Ridder (1877-1951) was the only daughter of the Belgian-German merchant August Cornelius de Ridder (1837-1911), known for his distinguished art collection of mainly Dutch and Flemish paintings of the 17th century which he built at his house at Kronberg near Frankfurt am Main. The famous Anglo-Hungarian artist Philip Alexius de László (1869-1937) painted Ella's portrait in 1903 in Baarn at the house of Hendrik Cornelis van den Honert (1854-1916), the successor of Peter Wilhelm Janssen as director of the Deli Maatschappij in 1898. De László had also painted her mother, Johanna Elisabethe Louise May (1853-1942) around 1898 and two of her children in 1908.A unique wedding album of two members of prominent German-Dutch business families, written and printed in 1896 as a special single copy publication. The album was produced in Amsterdam by Johan K. Koning, who took care of the calligraphy of the texts and the printing of the (divisonal) titles, explanatory leaves and vignettes. The spine and edges and corners of the boards show signs of wear with some minor loss of material at the foot of the sipne and the tips of the corners of the boards, the leather is somewhat faded adn scratched, all without affecting the general clarity of the tooling or the integrity of the binding. The watered silk on the first free flyleaf is torn, some offsetting to the blank versos of the leaves, and some glue residue on the leaves with dried flowers. Otherwise in good condition. Contemporary gold-tooled burgundy leather, the front board with a large gold-stamped monogram as a centrepiece (the intertwined initials of the couple: AJ and EdR) with the date ("24-26 August") above and the year ("1896") below lettered in gold, both boards show a single fillet frame along the outer edges, gold-tooled turn-ins, beige watered silk endleaves. Wedding album comprising five manuscript texts of occasional plays (4 in German, 1 in Dutch), written in a neat cursive in blank ink on thick laid paper, each illuminated with a 4-line decorated initial in red, blue and white on a gold/bronze field, richly decorated with penwork in black ink (extending down into the inner margin). Each text is preceded by a letterpress title leaf set in neo-Gothic type, also used for the general title, several text leaves, and the colophon. Further with 1 gouache illustration on grey paper (sheet size ca. 32 x 24.5 cm, mounted on the first leaf) showing a bouquet of flowers, 14 printed ephemera relating to the "Polterabend" (wedding-eve party) and the wedding on single or double leaves in various sizes (the wedding announcement/introduction to the wedding-eve party and attached is a photo of the couple in a circular frame of red wax, 5 menu cards, the lyrics to 6 German songs, a musical score by the German composer Wilhelm Aletter (1867-1934), and an announcement of the comic opera Des Teufels Antheil by the French composer Daniel Auber (1782-1871), performed by the Frankfurter Opernhaus on 25 August 1896 in Frankfurt am Main. Also with two manuscript wedding speeches in German, written in black ink on paper, two mounted albumen prints, the first showing two actors dressed as a Frisian farmer and his wife and the other showing a man in Chinese dress, 56 large ornamental vignettes printed in red or blue throughout, 17 ornamental tailpieces printed in black, blue, and red, and some dried flowers mounted on several leaves. Añadir al carritoFirst edition of a rare work about heliocentrism and solar eclipses, written during the time when heliocentrism was forbidden by the Catholic Church. The present work is an almost unknown work by the Mennonite mathematician, cartographer, and astronomer Dirck Rembrantsz van Nierop (1610-1682), as it is not mentioned in many of the most relevant reference works. It is also incredibly rare on the market, as we have only been able to trace it in two sales records of the past 100 years. The geocentric model, or the idea that the universe revolves around the earth, was conceived by the Alexandrian astronomer Claudius Ptolemy (ca. 100-ca. 170 CE). Although he was not the first to come up with the idea, his model was the only mathematically sound one. The Catholic Church believed his work to be in agreement with the Bible and heavily promoted it, so geocentrism became the dominant model until the 16th century. In 1543, Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) published De revolutionibus orbium coelstium, in which he successfully argued that the sun was actually the centre of the solar system. His publication marked the start of a scientific revolution and a paradigm shift from the geocentric to the heliocentric model. The Catholic Church mostly ignored the work, until Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) argued in 1615 that heliocentrism was not contrary to the teachings of the Bible. The Church took note of this and banned heliocentrism, including Copernicus' work and all publications advocating for his ideas, in 1616. This ban would officially last until 1758.The present work was published during this ban, and as such may have been somewhat clandestine. It tells the history of the geocentric versus the heliocentric model, explains solar eclipses, and why the heliocentric model is actually not contrary to the teachings of the Bible, illustrated with numerous figures. The author, Van Nierop, was a Dutch polymath who wrote over 30 scientific publications on mathematics, navigation, and astronomy. He was in correspondence with many of the most important scholars from his time, like Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) and René Descartes (1696-1650). He also taught a few important later scholars, like Symon van de Moolen (1658-1741), the first Dutch astronomer to perfectly predict a solar eclipse. With a (now separate) paper dustjacket with annotations about the work and author on the front wrapper, and handwritten numbers on the recto of the first flyleaves, possibly dates or prices. The marbled paper wrappers are somewhat creased and soiled. The edges of the wrappers and the outer corners of the leaves are somewhat frayed and creased. The first few leaves are slightly browned and soiled, with a water stain at the head of the first 13 leaves, slightly affecting the text and engraving. One of the very rare large paper copies of the first and only editions of the Dutch translation by Jacob van Ekers of Niebuhr's famous account of a voyage to Arabia and surrounding countries (ad 1) and his description of Arabia, Egypt and the Middle East (ad 2). Both works were originally written by the Danish traveller and surveyor Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) and published in German, in Copenhagen in 1772 under the titles, "Beschreibung von Arabien" and "Reisebeschreibung nach Arabien und anderen umliegenden Ländern". Both works were also translated in French and English. - In 1760 Niebuhr was invited to join a scientific expedition to Egypt. Other members of the expedition were Friedrich Christian von Haven (a Danish linguist and orientalist), Christian Carl Kramer (a Danish physician and zoologist), Georg Baurenfeind (an artist from southern Germany), Berggren (a Swedish ex-soldier) and Pehr Forrskal (a Swedish botanist). In January 1761, the expedition sailed from Copenhagen, Denmark to Alexandria, Egypt. The members of the expedition spent a year in Egypt, visiting Suez and Mount Sinai. They left Suez in October 1762 and sailed to Yemen. In May 1763 they reached Mocha where Von Haven and Forrskal died from malaria. In August 1763 Baurenfeind and Berggren died, followed by Kramer in February 1764. Niebuhr was the only one left to continue the expedition. In 1764, he explored India, sailing from Bombay to Muscat, as well as Shiraz, Babylon, Baghdad, Mosul, and Aleppo. He spent some time in Persepolis in 1765 where he has made very detailed drawings and maps, which were used for more than a hundred years. In 1766, he explored Palestine before finally returning to Copenhagen on 20 November 1767, after a journey of seven years. When he returned to Copenhagen the Swedish government warmly welcomed him and paid the costs of engraving the plates to illustrate his accounts of the voyage. Both works are lavishly illustrated, having together 2 large maps of Yemen and 148 beautifully engraved maps, plans and views of all the regions Niebuhr visited. - The present set has both works printed on the same large watermarked paper (Strasbourg bend above VDL) and is only slightly trimmed, measuring 296 x 242 mm with the tranchef.…

Beautifully illustrated large folio Dutch States Bible (Statenbijbel) with 6 six maps, including a world map, and a complete set of the striking illustrations drawn and engraved by Bernard Picart and others. The maps belong to the larger of two series by Daniël Stoopendaal and were explicitly made for the Keur Bibles with, for example, Bible scenes (rather than figures from classical mythology) decorating the world map. With the armorial bookplate of Hendrik Gerardsz. van Couwenhoven (1711-1792) and a short handwritten genealogy of Couwenhoven's family, from Couwenhoven's marriage in 1738 to the birth of this last child in 1766. The binding appears to date from the middle quarters of the 18th century, so it may have been bound and presented for the occasion of the 1738 wedding. In very good condition. The binding is slightly worn at the joints, the headcap of volume 1 is damaged and there are a few other minor surface imperfections, but it remains generally in very good condition.l Darlow & Moule 3337; for the maps: Poortman & Augusteijn, pp. 196-203 (G II, 2nd state, maps 1-6); for the prints: Poortman, Bijbel en prent II, pp. 140-145. Second Dutch edition of a classic account of three voyages by the Scotsman William Lithgow (1582-1645?), mostly on foot, from Rome to Greece, Crete, Turkey, Cyprus, the Holy Land, Egypt, Malta, continental Europe and North Africa, including the British Isles and the Iberian peninsula. The book went through more than a dozen editions in the course of two centuries. "He . had a greater knowledge of the interior of the countries he visited than most travellers of this period. He provides interesting details of the society, men, and manners he observed" (Blackmer). With the bookplate of the Dutch historian J.F.L. de Balbian Verster. The engraved plate faces p. 50 of the part 1, but probably should face p. 21 of part 2.
