Octavo (8" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First British edition. The late author's final case for Detective Constable Brunt (The Quiet Stranger, 1985; etc.) is another of his finely crafted, psychologically acute police procedurals. In the early 1900's Walderslow village is isolated and provincial. Widower Horatio Brittlebank, local squire and landowner, shares his manor with reclusive housekeeper Charlotte Machin and spoiled, self-centered son Bernard, just home from Oxford and already the seducer of Mary Ann, daughter of Septimus and Ellen Durden, owners of run-down Slickensides farm and the old mine beneath it. Rumors of Bernard's departure for Canada, spread by a couple of strangers in the village; a reported break-in at the farm; and unexplained changes in the neighborhood's water-flow patterns lead Brunt to the discovery of Bernard's corpse in the old mine workings. The young man had a legion of enemies, so it takes all Brunt's patience and acumen to find the murderer and conjure up an unconventional justice. Believable characters, sound motivation, and solid evocation of time and place have been Hilton hallmarks. Slickensides is no exception. A fitting windup to a first-rate career in the British traditional genre. Condition: A near fine copy in like jacket.

Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. The woman whose body was found down a south Wales coal mine was a stranger to those parts. She had come from the north-east in search of a missing husband, and with the help of an enquiry agent had found him. It did not take the local police long to put two and two together, especially when the husband confessed to the crime. But at the trial an able defense counsel tore the police evidence to ribbons and the case was thrown wide open once again, much to the relief of Inspector Crow, who had always distrusted the confession. What puzzled him was why it had ever been made. Condition: Jacket price chipped else a better than very good copy in a near fine jacket.

Añadir al carritoSoft Covers. Condición: VG+. No Jacket. Chris Gaskin Ilustrador. Revised Edition. In the late 1800s boats and ships in the Marlborough Sounds of the South Island began to notice a playful near-white dolphin that was attracted to their vessels. Soon the dolphin was regularly escorting the small steamers that ran services across Cook Strait in the sounds. For quarter-of a century Pelorus Jack, as the dolphin became known, kept up this routine, becoming world famous in the process. Photographed for papers and ,magazine and, as they say "a legend in his (or her) life time". Jack became tourist attraction too. After the winter of 1912 the dolphin was not seen again, its disappearance a mystery then, and now. Little has been written in recent times about "Jack" and when Tania Atkinson's book for children, "Pelorus Jack" was first published in 1984 (with a reprint later that year) it was the first for many years. She divided the story into five chapters which include the place of "Jack" in Maori mythology and culture, how he was placed under legislated protection by the NZ Parliament and advances theories on his demise. This revised edition published in 1995, 48 pages, new b/w illustrations by artist Chris Gaskin, including a map. Colour art card covers VG+, internally excellent, no inscriptions. This light book will be posted at cost.

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: VG. No Jacket. Photos Maps, Drawings Ilustrador. 1st. During WWI more that 100,000 young NZ soldiers served on the battlefields of that conflict. This collection of extracts from letters written to family and friends at home paints a more poignant and unvarnished picture of life on the different fronts than that depicted in formal histories. Nearly NZ 17,000 soldiers died of combat causes and another 1000 from injuries shortly after hostilities ended while thousands were wounded. Only 35 of those soldiers are represented in this collection of letters and many of the correspondants also lost their lives. One writer had three other brothers serving in the NZ forces, three brothers were killed, the one who survived returned home severely wounded --- a grim example of the dreadful cost to NZ of WWI. The letters are arranged in campaign sequence beginning with Gallipoli then France and the Western Front 1916, Sinai- Palestine, Western Front-France and Belgium 1917 and Western Front 1918. First edition of 2001 from Harper Collins, 168 pages including endnotes, bibliography and index, numerous small portrait photos, some group photos plus a number of general scenes, several maps and drawings included with letters. Tinted pictorial card covers VG with light damage to corners, internally VG with corner turn-over light creases some pages, no inscriptions.
