Paperback. Condición: New. Washed up far from home at the bitter end of the '70s, Paul spends an ordinary morning travelling to work at the Rotterdam container port and back into the city that evening to work his second job at a burger bar. As the day passes, his mind travels from his childhood in the UK, to an ill-fated love affair on an Left Bank kibbutz, and back to the chance of love in the present. Paul tries to unravel tangled knots of biography, the hopes and disappointments of a short life that still holds future and promise. But, as the torch is put to the last remnants of the hippie dreams he put up with and the harsh 80s economic winter begins to make itself in the frigid cold of a Dutch winter's day, Paul's problems are as much philosophical and political as they are personal and ethical.Mixing poignant, slice-of-life narrative with sinuous, deeply argued reflections on a life lived amidst the first brush fires of Consumerism, and asking questions as universal as they demand different answers from each of us, David Batten's Rotterdam is an absorbing, thought-provoking brush with the textures, heartbreaks and dilemmas of ordinary life, part novel, part autobiography, part ethical tract, individualistic and thoroughly humanist.

Paperback. Condición: New. Bonnie Thurston's Forgotten Futures: a memoir is a tender heart's cry and a passionate celebration in one. There is deep poignancy and longing here, but not a mawkish or maudlin word. We travel in two landscapes - the world inhabited with wonder for each small detail, and the internal world of half a couple, observing both the relationship's moments of grace, joy and intimacy and those of wounding, longing and loss. In supple, accessible language, honed to beauty, these poems resonate with a sense of the sacredness of small things and the transforming power of memory. 'When Love Is Passed'When love is passed to youon a bone china platelike Petits Fours on a doily, accept with gratitude.Life holds enoughawful, heavy crockery, and we have all eatenmore than our share of sand.

Paperback. Condición: New. A very varied and colourful collection. There are numerous poems about love, both personal and perhaps fictional. There is a strong awareness of the real world and Nature in all its varieties (not least in that very fine and unexpected poem 'The Roses of Heliogabalus'), but nevertheless it is the sense of a strong imagination at work that transforms the Real into Poetry that is so striking about this book. This is not another volume of careful observations that have been workshopped out of existence, but something altogether more wild and meaningful. - Fred Beake What I enjoy most about Clive's poetry is its capacity to surprise, to lull the reader into the promise of the familiar and then completely change their understanding, their expectations, their view of life itself. These are poems of nuance and feeling, tactile descriptions and human emotion, imagination and inventiveness.- Robert Garnham.

Paperback. Condición: New. It's winter, 1553. A small Italian hill town is under siege. In this narrative of uncommon endurance Alex Josephy inhabits place and people with lively precision. Told in the voices of women, including a chorus, a nearby mountain and the fortress herself, the uniting voice of the pamphlet is a 'girl', through whose eyes we see the minute details of life under immense stress and feel the nuances of loss, hunger and uncertainty. Again Behold the Stars is an intense immersion into a lockdown that challenges all the senses, one utterly different from the modern experience of lockdown during the Covid pandemic, yet also hauntingly resonant with it. Most vitally, the empathy evoked reaches us across almost five centuries, making us care in the present.

Paperback. Condición: New. In the initial sequence of this pamphlet, and following short lyrics, the writer explores the experience of living with long-term, and severe mental states. There is no safe haven of medical 'pathology' here, but an urgent rite of passage for the damaged and conflicted soul. A form of modern Purgatory-escaping the grasping jaws of Inferno, to find itself stumbling towards a rarefied, yet earthy, Paradiso.Ian Marriott's marvellous poems inhabit rather than observe nature - in fact they do both - but are as much concerned with the human condition. They work in the area of what Hopkins called instress. The voice is calm, contained and precise, as when he watches a Pond Skater, "So perilous / this thin meniscus - / six legs spread out". The poems too seem to tremble on the water of their vision.- George Szirtes.

Paperback. Condición: New. Lucid, linguistically dextrous, and woven through with Welsh phrases, and words and passages in French, this exquisitely observed sequence of haiku and haibun was written during lockdown, though only refers to Covid elliptically. There is nothing obvious here-instead there are connections-with nature, with relationships, with what is lost and what is saved.

Paperback. Condición: New. The sense of place and of senses porous to land and sea bring to life this stand-out sequence of poems. The voice, at once conversational and distinctive, is enraging and personal. There's an ache at the core of the beauty here, not of self-pity or of indulgence, but of empathy, of griefs, both human and beyond human, that held to the light, recognised, and invite compassion. This is clear-eyed but gracious poetry.

Paperback. Condición: New. A father who loomed large in his absence. A mother who was herself motherless from the age of five, a carer from a young age, who grew up amongst religious strictures. And a son bursting with creative genius, primed for rebellion. The mother, Vitalie Rimbaud, is Shadowmouth, so nick-named by her son-authoritarian, religious, patriotic and, in Arthur's eyes, full of snobbery and outdated values, as well as grief and regret. The son, Arthur Rimbaud, runs away from home over and over, joining the insurgents in the Paris Commune that was brutally suppressed only three weeks after he left it and later entering a volatile, sometimes violent relationship with the poet Paul Verlaine. The scene is set for extraordinary creative output, before Rimbaud abandoned writing at the age of 21, having changed the landscape of French poetry.Vitalie's trajectory is a harsh one, from losing her mother to being abandoned by her husband with four young children. Finally outliving the son she influenced enormously, but was often in opposition to, Vitalie became Rimbaud's privileged correspondent after he stopped writing poems to be a trader in Ethiopia. Rimbaud's work burst onto the world in a blaze of defiance. A creator who valued chaos, he wrote poetry of heart and fire for only five years, he bent form, upended punctuation and pursued a new language, before quitting as suddenly as he'd arrived.Exploring the voices of mother and son, Liliana Pasterska's Shadowmouth is a skilful blend of empathy and imagination. Psychologically astute and using white space between beautifully crafted fragments to convey complex emotions, the poetry here is powerful and poignant. Raw emotions boil over or reach into a future that is not there to save either mother or son. And Shadowmouth captures all of this and more-the pain, the conflicts, the fire, the longing to find new ways of expression, reflected in poetry, whose form artfully matches its substance.

Paperback. Condición: New. Sue Lewis's Journey has the ability to combine a conversational tone with exquisite phrases and images that surprise without any need for showiness. The quiet elegance of the poems, the sound patterns and pressure on language combine with a sensibility of the fragility of life that nonetheless refuses to be crushed. There's a yearning ache in these pieces that remains unsentimental and leaves space for what isn't or can't be said; an intelligence that pays attention to the deepest connections and celebrates 'the everyday enchantment'. from 'Transmuted'You are my consolation, turning up the way you have, riddling out this burnt and blackened year and I can't ask for more. Paperback. Condición: New. In The Third Sister Speaks Liliana A Pasterska immerses us in the voice of Anne Brontë-a frontierswoman and trailblazing writer of the mid 19th century who stepped out of 'female' territory to expose the taboos of her age, including gender inequality, marital abuse, the terrible conditions in which many women teachers worked and the effects of alcohol and substance abuse. A woman at the margins of her time, Anne Brontë lived for only 29 years, yet left a wealth of acute observation and sharp insight in her writing, as well as poetry that witnesses to her personal, spiritual and literary intelligence. For all of this, her voice is the one not often heard amongst the extraordinary Brontë sisters. But here is a corrective to this. In lyrical poetry originally commissioned for a programme of music and words celebrating Anne Brontë's bicentenary, we enter Anne's world. In this careful and beautifully achieved debut pamphlet, the voice of the poet reaches into the voice of a young woman still calling to the modern reader across time: elegant, spare, leaving space for silence and allowing its questions to resonate long after reading:I am a teller of truth a seer-can you hear me?

Paperback. Condición: New. In this award-winning pamphlet, Anne Bateman takes us on journeys, both geographical and emotional. The images in Tattvas are vivid and resonant. There's a strong sense of connections, whether to land or people, communicated with phrases that make us hold our breath as we read. And there is a formal openness to the work that lets in space for us to accompany the author and make our own journeys. An effective and accomplished sequence from the author of My Body Remembers.

Paperback. Condición: New. Gill McEvoy is a poet who moves through the world with all her senses open. The quality of attention here is profound and pays off in an elegance of phrase and originality of image that makes these poems sing off the page. There is often a playfulness at work in the linguistic dexterity of these pieces, as the poet engages in a car chase with the moon or the flora, fauna and meteorology of October are presented as a weather forecast. There is a connection to land here that is lived and authentic, it is never sentimental, but it brims with hope and generosity even in those moments when we know 'the longed-for vision' might never appear.

Paperback. Condición: New. Grief runs through these poems, most beginning with an epigraph from a diary entry by Emily Brontë, whose first loss was her mother when she was just three years old.We are in an interior world in this sequence, thoughts and feelings pouring through these elegant poems, but always anchored in the body, in the physical. It's in the daily round of kneading the bread that anger is transferred from body to dough till both are transformed; it's in the 'intricate feathery leaflets/sweet chrysanthemum-like scent' of yarrow that refuge is experienced; it's in the imagination of an 'island's sun' that dark thoughts ('a crepe-winged crow') find respite. The poems move between the quiet daily life of a woman who loses those she loves over and over again and Emily Brontë as an extraordinary writer. And in that movement, emotions so earth-shattering, so veined with yearning, so unspeakable in their grief that they challenge death itself, find their form. Liliana Pasterska brings to life a soaring spirit in lucid images that leave us in awe.

Paperback. Condición: New. 'There is no such thing/as refuge or retreat' ends one of the poems after layering vivid image on image, leaving us changed for the experience of reading. And it happens again and again-embodied, specific, clear images that deliver meaning that is integral to the experience yet surprising and new. And along the way the emotions build, not from being told or hammered home, but because we are allowed to sense them so deeply that we are able, also, to feel them: the loneliness and the tenderness, the sadness that is reflected back in the green eye of a piece of polished malachite, the loss that lurks in the corner of an office, the romance and the longing. This is a collection to savour, full of words that haunt, it pulls us back to find another layer of meaning, and another.

Paperback. Condición: New. Sue Lewis has won previous pamphlet awards and one of the many things that delights about her work is that each new collection pushes the boundaries of language and integrity further. The writing is lucid, precise, the metaphors are precise and fresh, but the effect is to take us within-to interior landscapes where there is not certainty but the constant liminality of life in process, the questions and doubts we contend with, the moments of compassion alongside the bittersweet ache for the lives that might have been, while tending to the life that is. There is not a false word in this exquisite collection as it makes its 'risky/tender pilgrimage.'.
