Paperback. Condición: Very Good. This book is an invitation to the healthiest recreation of all - walking in the countryside. It provides the perfect alibi to escape from routine and breathe deeply of nature's bounty; to unwind and see the beauty on its own terms. Where better than in the subject area of this central Peakland guide? It comprises both gritstone moors and edges bordering the northern limestone uplands - a deeply incised dome with dry valleys and narrow wooded gorge-like dales running crystal streams. The Northern Dales are a delightful blend of pastoral landscapes, densely patterned with lichen covered grey drystone walls and extremely well endowed with narrow walled lanes, packhorse ways and footpaths. Some 'thoroughfares' are in frequent use, whilst others remain, despite the popularity of the area, seldom trodden, making this the ideal location for recreational walking. The onus is not on 'bruising hillcraft' but rather on the more gentle reflective pace of the observant countrygoer who prefers to be entertained by a 'whole landscape' experience. This book presents a broadly based selection of walks from which both the first-time visitor may derive insights and the habitue gain new perspectives on the unique form and fabric of this, the first National Park in England, established in 1951. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. A guidebook of 60 short walks in the south of the English Lake District, the first of a three-part series covering the whole of Lakeland. This guide divides the South Lake District into four regions: the Central Fells, the area around Coniston Water and Windermere, the Eastern Fells and Dales, and the Limestone Fringe. 60 short walks are described, generally between 4 and 9 miles, enough to pleasantly fill a good half-day, and ideal for day visitors or family walkers. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The western part of this two-volume guidebook gives 42 walking routes to all the 140 or so tarns in the western English Lake District, Cumbria, UK. Scattered across the Lake District National Park are hundreds of tarns and small pools waiting to be discovered by the unhurried fell-walker. From huge Devoke Water to the tiny Lang Tarn on the Heathwaite Fells, they reveal that every tarn is unique in its appeal and that the seasonal changes ensure that no two visits are ever the same. Each of the 42 walks is accompanied by a hand-drawn 1:25,000 scale route map, plus beautiful pen-line drawings and details on distances, ascents, starting points and precise routes, including historical and environmental snippets to tempt the reader further. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Guidebook of high peak walks in the Peak District, England, UK. This guide is the first part of a two-volume survey designed to balance the marvellous diversity and wealth of walking country contained in the Peak District National Park. These high peak walks encompass the Dark Peak moors of Black Hill, Bleaklow, Kinder Scout, the higher eastern edges and the annexed western gritstone uplands from Windgather to The Roaches. The present area is characterised by great swelling moorland composed of sandstones and shales capped by a coarse gritstone, known as Millstone Grit, outcropping along plateau edges and scarps. Gritstone is pervious but a climatic quirk caused a thin impervious sedimentation to stop water penetration and triggered the formation of a thick blanket of peat over the Pennine uplands. 22 day-long walks and one linear challenge walk, carefully researched and described, offer walkers a practical and entertaining means of acquainting themselves with this popular moorland region. Each walk is designed to embrace particular localities, drawing on the contrasting qualities of each to sustain interest and develop an appreciation of the wild, dramatic and often shy beauty peculiar to this northern sector of Peakland. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Unlike most of the Cumbrian and Welsh peaks, the majority of these mountains do not have paths or walkers' tracks up them, but the many excellent stalker's paths takes one deep into wild territory and often gives a flying start to an ascent. Walkers in Torridon have to accustom themselves to free-ranging over heather, grass, rock and marsh. In the sketch maps, stalker's and the other paths are shown as broken lines, the recommended free-ranging routes are shown as dotted lines. Most of the expeditions assume that you have transport, and those which do not require it are indicated and are written as though Shieldaig is the starting point. The 'climbs' often involve descending again by the route of your ascent, which builds in a considerable safety factor if you are new to the area and also the comfort and pleasure of returning over now familiar territory. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Guidebook to walking and mountainbiking in Scotland's Great Glen area, Monadhliath and Moray regions stretching from Fort William along the Great Glen and Lochs Lochy and Ness, book 6 in a series of 9 guides to the Scottish glens covering Fort William to Fort Augustus and Drumnadrochit, South West Monadhliath, North East Monadhliath and Moray. The aim of this series is to provide the mountainbiker and walker with information on an intended route so they know something of what to expect. One of the problems is that Ordnance Survey maps give no indication as to whether an ?other road' is metalled, a path or a forest fire break, or anything in between. Many bridges shown on OS maps do not exist. Rivers are difficult to judge in size from the map, and a building may be anything from a pile of stones to a maintained bothy. All is revealed without removing the sense of adventure and exploration. Gradient profiles help to assess how strenuous a route is, and each hand-drawn page contains a wealth of information. The object is to save leisure time from being wasted and enable the armchair explorer to plan ahead or relive experiences. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Situated towards the eastern end of the Alps' great curve from the Mediterranean coast through central Europe to the Balkans, the Dolomites region occupies an area of northern Italy as large as Wales. Although the Dolomites' reputation as a playground for 'hard men' is fully justified, these mountains are by no means the domain of the rock climber alone. A dense network of footpaths offers endless scope for exhilarating high-level walks; the renowned 'vie ferrate' (rock routes aided by fixed metal ladders and cables) lead up into many sensational situations, while in winter the region becomes a premier skiing destination for thousands of Europeans. The authors hope that these treks through the Dolomites will yield rewarding experiences and enduring memories for readers able to visit this most extraordinary region. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Guidebook to walking the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. The seven Canary Islands seem to bask in everlasting sunshine and have been called The Fortunate Islands. Away from the bustling resorts, walkers can discover exceptionally rugged volcanic mountains, dense forests, scrubby semi-deserts and splendid cliff coastlines. Most of the landscapes around the islands are protected as national parks, rural parks, nature reserves and sites of special scientific interest. Walkers with an interest in flowers will find a bewildering array of endemic species. A companion guide (Canary Islands 1: West) covers Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. Together they reveal 100 walking routes covering over 1000 miles (1600km) in total. The routes take in a wide variety of landscapes from the coast to the highest mountains. Most of the walks can be accessed using local bus services, and as bars are abundant, cold drinks can be enjoyed along the way. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. "Cycle Touring in the French Alps" presents a personal selection of the most picturesque cycling routes through the mountains of Southeast France. The eight tours - seven circuits plus the "Grand Traverse" from Geneva to Nice - include the "classic" high passes of the French Alps (Galibier, Iseran, Izoard, etc) as well as many lesser known areas of the pre-Alps and Southern Jura. Although all of the tours are in mountain areas, the scenery - from the rolling hills of the Bugey to the dramatic limestone gorges of the Chartreuse or the snowy peaks of the Ecrins - is extremely varied. Without neglecting the "must-see" places, the tours have been designed to take you through the secret corners and forgotten backwaters of the regions described; even amongst the most awe-inspiring mountains, it is often the more discreet facets of the countryside that reveal an area's true charm. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. People who live in the immediate vicinity have walked these moors for pleasure for the last 50 years or more, sometimes risking trespass in so doing. Attitudes gradually change, and recently the need for local recreation areas has been accepted and thus the West Pennine Moors Recreation Area was born. The area covers 90 square miles and is predominantly high moorland divided by broad valleys and steep-sided wooded cloughs, many of which contain the reservoirs of the North West Water Authority. This combination of lake, wood and moor produces scenery, that is particularly fine in the western part, and gives some of the best walks, not only in terms of scenery, but of the interesting things to be seen. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The Gran Paradiso is well known to continental walkers but it is unusual to encounter any British walkers there and this guide has been written to show what is possible. An in-depth introduction describes many facets of the Valdotain hill country and deals with the differences likely to be found between walking in the UK and the Alps. The Via Alta 2 is a walk within the reach of any strong walker, covering 88 miles and 9000m of ascent, passing from valley to valley over high cols. The Via Alta 4 is more demanding undertaking over 106 miles with 9000m of ascent. Like the Via Alta 2, this passes from valley to valley but more into the heart of the mountains and close to the glaciers. The Traverse of the Gran Paradiso is described, though only the western portion of the route is given, also within the abilities of any strong walker. It passes through some very wild country, with little accommodation so that the walker has to be self contained. Finally, some shorter outings are described. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. The aim in this series of books is to provide the mountainbiker and walker with information on a variety of possible routes so they know something of what to expect. One of the problems is that O.S. maps give no indication as to whether an 'other road' is metalled, a path or a forest fire break, or anything in between. Many bridges shown on O.S. maps do not exist. Rivers are difficult to judge in size from the map, and a building may be anything from a pile of stones to a maintained bothy. All is revealed without removing the sense of adventure and exploration. Gradient profiles help to assess how strenuous a route is, and each hand-drawn page contains a wealth of information. The object is to save wasted leisure time and enable the armchair explorer to plan ahead or relive experiences. "The Cairngorm Glens" includes: Braemar, Feshiebridge and Rothiemurchus, Abernethy and Tomintoul. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.…
