Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Why do we have so many dialects in England? Why do we not all speak in standard English? How has our history shaped and influenced the language we speak today? In a Manner of Speaking is a fun and fascinating exploration of spoken English that will answer these questions and many more. Following…history from the time of the Roman conquest through to the days of the British Empire, chapters explore the beginnings of spoken English, how each invading force brought different sounds to the language, and how the English tongue has evolved over time. This is not a manual on English grammar. It is about how we came to speak our modern English, and why, even in the country of its birth, there are so many variations on the way the language is spoken. Witty, interesting and easy to read, In a Manner of Speaking is also superbly illustrated by renowned cartoonist Barrie Appleby. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Appleby, Barrie (ilustrador).

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Everyone is familiar with the story of D-Day and the triumphal liberation of France by the Allies: a barbaric enemy was defeated by Allied ingenuity, courage and overwhelming military force, helped by dreadful German command errors and the terrible state of Wehrmacht forces in the West but is thi…s all true? The Wehrmacht was hugely experienced, equipped with some of the best weaponry of the war and was holding its own in Italy and Russia at the time. Berlin knew the invasion was coming and had had years to prepare for it. So how did the Germans view the impending invasion and campaign, did they feel ready, what forces did they have and could they have done better? Previous histories have focused on the clash of the generals; the battle between von Runstedt and Eisenhower, Montgomery and Rommel, but on the German side in particular this was a battle that would be fought by divisional and regimental commanders; the German D-Day colonels upon whom the real business of trying to defeat the invasion fell it was they and their men, outnumbered and outgunned, who somehow held Normandy for ten whole weeks against the greatest seaborne invasion force ever assembled, and occasionally even came close to defeating it. In the end they lost, and the majority of these unsung leaders ended up killed, wounded or captured in the fighting. As for their men, they ranged from elite Waffen-SS stormtroopers through to bewildered teenagers, old men, recycled invalids and even anti-communist Eastern legions. Written from the other side and told through the words of the veterans, this book is a revelation. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. If you think that the English language stays still, carved in tablets of stone, think again. English is constantly on the move, enhancing its scope by gratefully accepting words from other languages. It tolerates changes to meanings, often with hilarious consequences, and it allows words to slip…away into oblivion when we seem to have no further use for them. In three parts, this book looks at each of these comings and goings, starting with the welcome immigrants that we assume to be English words but which actually originated from all over the world. Part two takes a stroll through Dr Johnsons famous dictionary and looks at words and meanings that time forgot. Finally, part three is where we hope to forestall a similar fate for words that are well known but seem to be less used than they deserve to be. Words change: they immigrate and emigrate. They reflect changing fashions and roam across centuries. This book delves into their origins: Where do words come from? How do their meanings change? Why do we stop using them? This book explores over 3000 words. It explains how they have arrived from over 100 different languages. It traces their changing meanings since Samuel Johnson first compiled his dictionary, and finally identifies many words that are endangered through lack of use. As we rush headlong into a world of social media acronyms and smiley faces, now is the time to rescue and enjoy gems that have slipped away and to remember that, if words are not used, they will go the way of the Dodo. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

The British Empire had a rich, varied and controversial history, commonly perceived to have spanned 500 years from the era of Columbus and his voyages of discovery to the aftermath of the Second World War. Jem Duducu takes us on a whirlwind tour of the Empire and its history, condensing the gigantic story into easy-to-read, bitesize sections. He examines some of the most important aspects of the Empire, from exploration and discovery in the era of Elizabeth I, to the Slave Trade, to the eventual decline after the Second World War. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Monty Newton and Rodolphe Lemoine must be two of the most outrageous conmen in history. When the Rajah Sir Hari Singh of Kashmir came to London in 1919, his first time in Europe, between visits to the King and Queen and the Prince of Wales he was introduced by his aide de camp to Mrs Maud (Maudie…) Robinson. They became lovers and went to Paris for Christmas where they were discovered in bed together. The Mayfair Mob had set the whole thing up. The Rajahs aide de camp masterminded the scam and Sir Hari paid up to avoid citation in a divorce case. What happened next was sensational: a court case that gripped the world for eight days in 1924. The British government imposed the greatest secrecy on the scandal and kept files closed for a hundred years rather than the usual thirty. Monty was saved by the intervention of his partner in crime Lemoine, a German working for French intelligence, who - in 1931 - bought the working manuals of the new German Enigma encoding machine from a clerk, so that - in 1932 - a young Polish mathematician could crack the code. This is five years before Alan Turing even thought of studying cryptology. In between the greatest blackmail pay-out in history and buying the code, Chancers follows Newton and Lemoine around the world, from Monte Carlo to Mexico - always staying in the best hotels - as they con the rich and gullible out of their millions. During Barbara Jefferys research at the India Office Library and the National Archives she has unearthed an extraordinary story: one document was opened specially for her and she was obliged to read it in a locked room. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

All this and more is captured in this remarkable book, celebrating the vibrant life of this most historic area. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Skulduggery in the Home Counties! This book is a fascinating look at the history of spying and spies in and around Hertfordshire. Rudyard Kipling called it The Great Game. Today, although it involves billions of pounds and sophisticated technology, the motives behind spying never change, they are… much the same as when man first waged war. From the beginning of recorded history, codes and ciphers have been used to carry secret messages; from plots against Elizabeth I to the Enigma machine. Pamela Shields takes the reader through a thoroughly absorbing collection of stories from Chaucer and the Knights Templar to John le Carre and on to the 1980s when Anthony Blunt was revealed as a long-time Soviet agent. It's astonishing that so many spies had Hertfordshire connections. They probably still have - you just never know who you're rubbing shoulders with! Meticulously researched and accessibly presented this book will be of interest to not only the serious reader but also to anyone who is simply curious enough to dip in and out. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. With few TVs, children in the 1950s made their own entertainment: they played conkers, built dens and go-karts, climbed trees and re-enacted fights from the latest cinema blockbuster. Food was, for many years, still rationed and bought from the local corner shop. There was no pre-packed food, fro…zen food or many of the other luxuries that we take for granted today. Families would gather around the radio to hear the latest dramatizations such as the incredibly popular show Dan Dare, which was sponsored by Horlicks and was first broadcast in 1951. A trip to the cinema included a Pathe News reel, cartoons and a double bill featuring the latest movies. Much has changed for children over the years and this book shows what life was once like for the children of the 1950s including home life, school days, music and fashions. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The first ever biography of Jane Seymour, Henry VIII's third wife, who died in childbirth giving the king what he craved most - a son and heir. Jane Seymour is often portrayed as meek and mild and as the most successful, but one of the least significant, of Henry VIII's wives. The real Jane was a… very different character, demure and submissive yet with a ruthless streak - as Anne Boleyn was being tried for treason, Jane was choosing her wedding dress. From the lowliest origins of any of Henry's wives her rise shows an ambition every bit as great as Anne's. Elizabeth Norton tells the thrilling life of a country girl from rural Wiltshire who rose to the throne of England and became the ideal Tudor woman. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. There is a distinct lack of readily available information about the British prime ministers, especially as a group. There are thick biographies of the big names Pitt, Gladstone, Churchill - but who were the others? There are plenty of short booklets and pamphlets for all the monarchs but little o…r nothing on most of the fifty-three PMs. What better way to introduce these individuals than through a short, accurate review of each Prime Minister, briefly describing their background and influence, their role in British history and in major world events. On closer inspection, the PMs are revealed to be more colourful figures than might be imagined, whose unique personalities and individual deeds shaped important historical events. British Prime Ministersoffers a handy and accessible guide to all of Britains heads of government, from Sir Robert Walpole right through to Boris Johnson, thereby lifting the veil of obscurity from an all-too-neglected cast of characters. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Surrey Executions lists in chronological order all the criminals hanged in the county during the nineteenth century. It opens in the era of the Bloody Code, when there were more than two hundred capital crimes on the statute book and executions took place in public on the roof of Horsemonger Lane… Gaol, often with crowds of several thousand watching. In the early years of the century, the condemned were guilty of crimes such as highway robbery, rape, arson and sheep theft. Others included Colonel Despard and his fellow conspirators who were executed for treason and coiners Benjamin and Sarah Herring, the first of two married couples to stand together on the scaffold. It was not until 1836 that William Harley became the last Surrey villain to hang for a crime other than murder. The notorious murders described include those committed by Frederick and Maria Manning who murdered a friend, Dr Lamson who poisoned his brother-in-law, Catherine Webster who killed her employer and baby farmer Margaret Waters. In the closing years of the Victorian age, executions were carried out away from the public gaze, behind the walls of Wandsworth Gaol. This thoroughly researched work is enhanced by contemporary illustrations to provide a fascinating read. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Soho has always been a source of fascination. A district quite unlike any other in London, where glamour meets squalor and then often merges. It is different, never mirroring the changes of its more fashionable neighbours. It seduces and destroys in equal measures. The Windmill Theatre opened in…1932 and, after entertaining audiences through thirty-two years of dramatic change in Soho, finally closed its doors in 1964. In this book, the Windmill forms the backdrop against which Mike Hutton explores all the diversity taking place in the surrounding streets of this unique district during a period of social and moral change. There is the influence of the many nationalities living there during the years leading up to the war. Organised crime existing alongside leading West End theatres and restaurants. The arrival of the GIs with money to burn and time on their hands. The black market booms. Want some nylons? How about a gun? No problem. Falling bombs bring terror, but there is still time to party. Then it's all over and, nationally, austerity takes hold, but never quite in Soho. The squeaky clean Windmill girls are joined by models baring all in the burgeoning strip clubs. There is money to be made, dodgy policemen to be paid off, and violence simmers away to a background of music. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. In the 1920s and '30s the corner shop was not just a place to buy groceries. It was a place to meet familiar faces and help people out. People bought groceries on a daily basis and going to the corner shop provided many people with a daily routine. Yet finding the finances for groceries could be…a struggle and, when times were hard, many people would have to obtain their groceries 'on tick'. For some this was a way of life and shopkeepers had to keep a careful balance between credit control and offending customers. Hazel grew up in her father's shop and this collection of stories recalls her memories of those times. Some tales are sad but some are truly hilarious. A charming collection of stories that remember the people, the goods they sold in the shop and a way of life that has now vanished. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. It is hard, from a distance of nearly two centuries, to imagine the impact the coming of the railways must have had at the start of the nineteenth century. Their physical impact was dramatic enough great mechanical horses, breathing fire and smoke and drawing impossibly heavy trains at unimaginab…le speeds, across a landscape transformed by the embankments and cuttings, viaducts and tunnels their passage demanded. However, they would also transform the way war was conducted and peace was maintained; prove to be one of the drivers of the dramatic industrial growth of the nineteenth century; create opportunities for many to become enormously wealthy, but impoverish many more, who invested unwisely; cause the state to think again about the policy of laissez-faire that was its default position; transform our leisure; radically re-shape our towns and cities and change our very notions of time and how we measured it. In this book, Stuart Hylton looks at the changes wrought in the British Isles during the first century of the railway age and answers the question, what did the railways do for us? The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
