In Murray's vigorous and sinuous language, 'song and story are pixels / in a mirrorball', reflecting back to us endless possibilities. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Winner of the 2016 Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry Prize for First Full Collection. Shortlisted for the 2017 Michael Murphy Memorial Poetry Prize. Shortlisted for the 2015 Costa Poetry Award. In the informal rituals of the tide remaking its tideline, of a painter absorbed in the act of painting or of an old couple greeting the night, the English poet Kate Miller sees and charts the creative process at work. As its title suggests, Miller's striking debut collection explores perception, the poet's eye and ear trained on distances that stretch beyond comfort zones. This is a book full of movement: even quiet reflections on home and family life are rarely still. Throughout the collection Miller dwells on the unfixed and restless image and shows herself as subject to it - to the difficult illusion of physical energy in sculpture, to the changeability of skies and the insistent rhythm and presence of the sea. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The word "jazz" did not begin to appear in print until around 1915 and was grudgingly admitted into polite society. This book explores the vocabulary which has grown up around it. Entries include words unique to jazz ("bebop", Dixieland", "ragtime"); ordinary words with specific jazz meanings ("cool", "jam", "stride"); musical terms adopted by jazz ("bar", "rhythm", "swing"); instruments associated with jazz ("alto", "clarinet", "trombone"); nicknames of musicians ("Bird", "Duke", "Satchmo"); place-names lined to movements in jazz ("Dial", "Okeh", "Savoy") and notable venues ("Birdland", "Cotton Club", "Minton's"). The introduction argues that the great era of jazz lies between the early-1920s (before which it still consisted of various formative elements) and the late 1970s (after which it began to merge with other musical forms). He suggests that "jazz" will eventually describe a major musical style of the mid-20th century, as "baroque" describes one of the early-18th century. The word "jazz" did not begin to appear in print until around 1915 and was grudgingly admitted into polite society. This book explores the vocabulary which has grown up around it. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Shortlisted for the Polari Book Prize 2021. Winner of the 2020 Forward Prize for Best Collection. Shortlisted for the Costa Poetry Award 2020. A Telegraph Poetry Book of the Month (February 2020). A Telegraph Book of the Year 2020. A Guardian Book of the Year 2020. The Air Year is a time of flight, transition and suspension: signatures scribbled on the sky. Bird's speakers exist in a state of unrest, trapped in a liminal place between take-off and landing, undeniably lost. Love is uncontrollable, joy comes and goes at hurricane speed. They walk to the cliff edge, close their eyes and step out into the air. Caroline Bird has five previous collections published by Carcanet. Her fifth collection, In These Days of Prohibition, was shortlisted for the 2017 T.S. Eliot Prize and the Ted Hughes Award. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Shortlisted for the Writers' Prize 2024 Shortlisted for the Jhalak Prize 2024 Longlisted for the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature 2024 Winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize 2023 Winner of the Forward Prize for Best Collection 2023 The Poetry Book Society Spring Choice 2023 A Guardian and The Irish Times Book of the Year Jason Allen-Paisant's debut collection Thinking With Trees won the 2022 OCM Bocas Prize for poetry and was an Irish Times and White Review Book of the Year 2021. In Poetry London Maryam Hessavi wrote, 'Jason Allen-Paisant is uncompromising when digging down through the undergrowth of our imperialist past and yet he succeeds in replanting new narratives in the same soil where these toxic ideologies used to, and still, reside.' The interlocking poems of his second collection, Self-Portrait as Othello, imagine Othello in the urban landscapes of modern London, Paris and Venice and invent the kinds of narrative he might tell about his intersecting identities. Poetic memoir and ekphrastic experiment, Self-Portrait as Othello focuses on a character at once fictional and real. Othello here represents a structure of feeling that was emerging in seventeenth-century Venice, and is still with us. Portraiting himself as Othello, Allen-Paisant refracts his European travels and considers the Black male body, its presence, transgressiveness and vulnerabilities. Othello's intertwined identities as 'immigrant' and 'Black', which often operate as mutually reinforcing vectors, speak to us in the landscape of twenty-first-century Europe. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Although The Brontes have long fascinated readers of fiction and biography, their poetry was all too little known until this pioneering selection by Stevie Davies, the novelist and critic. Charlotte (1816-1855) is certainly a competent poet, and Anne (1820-1849) developed a distinctive voice, while Emily (1818-1848) is one of great women poets in English. All three sisters, as Stevie Davies remarks in her introduction, were Romantic in inspiration, writing poetry of passionate personal feeling and of pure imagination. they share certain themes - liberty, loneliness, love - and harbour the myth of a lost paradise. Read together with their novels, the poems movingly elucidate the ideas around which the narratives revolve. And they surprise us out of our conventional notions of the sisters' personalities: Emily's rebelliousness, for example, is counterbalanced here by great tenderness. This selection gives an idea of the variety of thought and feeling within each authors's work, and of the way in which the poems of these three remarkable writers parallel and reflect each other. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. …

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Who are the invisible kings? Why do two bears follow them round Britain? And what happens when a gypsy's curse comes miraculously to life? David Morley's new book reveals extraordinary worlds where the real and imagined converge in stories and charms, just this side of science and magic. When David Morley's Romani poems first appeared in the "London Review of Books" and "PN Review", the strangeness of the language and their narrative power convinced readers that here was a genuinely new imaginative world. Partly Romani himself, the poet follows - and remakes - a tradition of weaving stories, from the conflicts in his own culture and that of the Roma. The personal poems that open the collection develop into a traveller's-eye view of England and Europe as stages for war, passion and betrayal. Never before has a writer made such daring and beautiful use of the Romani language as a vehicle for contemporary poetry, nor has a Romani poem achieved the devastating epic scope of 'Kings', the central narrative of the collection. "The Invisible Kings" continues a cycle of poems that began with David Morley's "Scientific Papers" and which will conclude with "An Island Blown Inland". The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Dennis O'Driscoll's fifth collection contains poems in which his cool and unflinching vision lends a pungent originality to his treatment of love and death as well as to subjects as diverse - and improbable - as economic boom, business travel and Alzheimer's disease. By contrast, the book also contains more lyrical and personal poems, including the tender and evocative childhood sequence with which the collection ends. "Weather Permitting" follows O'Driscoll's widely praised "Quality Time" (1997) which contained his celebrated long poem, "The Bottom Line", described by Alan Brownjohn in "The Sunday Times" as 'devastatingly accurate, and scary'. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. …

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Lucky Day begins with natural landscapes through which love and lyric flicker and flare. The sparrows, pigeons and magpies of the urban periphery lighten the atmosphere, edging the collection towards the city in the funny elegy 'Bird List'. The sequence that follows, 'Hand Held', is personal and vulnerable, a finally celebratory exploration of his experience as the father of a child with severe learning difficulties. The collection concludes with poems of love and memory, affirming in the end the luck of survival. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. For critics like John Ruskin and Walter Pater, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1892) was one of the great creative figures of the day, a painter and a poet of major stature. Yeats and the young Pound regarded him as an exemplary figure of solitary dedication to art and beauty. Rossetti's most original work may have been in preparing the way for the modernists who in turn dethroned him. He called the sonnet "a moment's monument", and his best short lyrics are instants of compressed emotion cut free of time. In this, as in the suggestiveness of his imagery, he anticipates the French Symbolists. He can also be regarded as the founder of modern verse translation, not only for the freshness of his versions but also for his choice of poets - Villon, Cavalcanti and the young Dante. In this selection Clive Wilmer has made a personal choice, emphasizing the "pure poetry" of the lyrics at the expense of the more conventionally Victorian monologues and narratives. He has also included a generous selection from the translations, and provided a biographical and critical introduction. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Kei Miller's work was acclaimed by the distinguished Jamaican writer Olive Senior as 'Some of the most exciting poetry Ive read in years. An extraordinary new voice singing with clarity and grace.' A Light Song of Light sings in the rhythms of ritual and folktale, praise songs and anecdotes, blending lyricism with a cool wit, finding the languages in which poetry can sing in dark times. The book is in two parts: Day Time and Night Time, each exploring the inseparable elements that together make a whole. Behind the daylight world of community lies another, disordered, landscape: stories of ghosts and bandits, a darkness violent and seductive. At the heart of the collection is the Singerman, a member of Jamaica's road gangs in the 1930s, whose job was to sing while the rest of the gang broke stones. He is a presence both mundane and shamanic. Kei Millers poems celebrate 'our incredible and abundant lives', facing the darkness and making from it a song of the light. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Winner of the 2016 Poetry Book Society Choice Winner of the 2016 Forward Prize for Best Collection Short-listed for the 2016 T.S. Eliot Prize Expatriation: my having had a patria, a fatherland, to leave, did not occur to me until I was forced to invent one. [.] This luxury of inattention, invention, and final mismatch. a Trinidad being created that did not take my Trinidad away (my Trinidad takes itself away, in reality, over time). that is expatriation, no? An exile, a migrant, a refugee, would have been in more of a hurry, would have been more driven out or driven towards, would have been seeking and finding not. In Measures of Expatriation Vahni Capildeos poems and prose-poems speak of the complex alienation of the expatriate, and address wider issues around identity in contemporary Western society. Born in Trinidad and resident in the UK, Capildeo rejects the easy depiction of a person as a neat, coherent whole pure is a strange word embracing instead a pointilliste self, one grounded in complexity. In these texts sense and syntax are disrupted; languages rub and intersect; dream sequences, love poems, polylogues and borrowed words build into a precarious self-assemblage. Cliche, she writes, is spitting into the sea, and in this book poetry is still a place where words and names, with their power to bewitch and subjugate, may be disrupted, reclaimed. The politics of the body, and cultures of sexual objectification, gender inequality and casual racism, are the borders across which Capildeo homes, seeking the modest luxury of being looked at as if one is neutral ground. In the end it is language itself, the determination to speak, to which the poet finds she belongs: Language is my home, I say; not one particular language. Measures of Expatriation is in the vanguard of literature arising from the aftermath of Empire, with a fearless and natural complexity. Expatriation: my having had a patria, a fatherland, to leave, did not occur to me until I was forced to invent one. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Oli Hazzard's third collection emerges from the daily disarray of care and work, nature and technology. Its ambitious, formally various poems extract 'the ore / from boredom', as memorypersonal, familial, social, historicaland the collective memory of poetry itself are wrenched out of shape by dramatic disruptions in rhythm, space and scale. The sadness and pain of forgetting is here too, alongside its unexpected forms of potential. The title, borrowed from the Lutheran hymn that inspired a Bach cantata, catches the book's dreamy, kaleidoscopic, cross-temporal dialogues. Through satirical, allusive, tender, hopeful poems, Sleepers Awake makes spaces for intimacy with the reader, arguing 'through an off-key melody / for the jovial texture of batshit relations, for the pleasure of live-drawing in sceptical company'. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Jenny King was born in London during the Blitz. Her parents, both teachers, encouraged her to write poetry as a child and overcame wartime paper rationing to make her a book to write them in. Her poems view the world calmly, thoughtfully. They consider memory, peace and its opposite, the inwardness and variety of the natural world, and how an individual relates to others. All the poems are concerned with the interest and excitement of language itself. Some use traditional patterns in unexpected ways, sometimes including rhyme, sometimes in more fluid forms. They work for clarity and memorable perception. Accessible language and natural rhythms are always important though used variously. Looking into the known - or half known - past of family history, the poem can disclose the fallibility of memory but also how present relates to past and how the present with its difficulties intrudes on any consideration of how to live. These poems result from a long writing life and study of both past and contemporary poets. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The memories from which Fred DAguiar translates these poems are cultural and personal, from the anciencies of the Gilgamesh epic to the modern world, from classical philosophy to C.L.R. James and Aime Cesaire, from Asia and Europe to the new world in which their destinies are unpredictably worked out. DAguiars concluding translations are of Derek Walcott and Kamau Brathwaite, masters and remakers of language and form, from whom (among a multitude of others) he takes his bearings. This unusual integration of tributes and the ironies they provoke give Translations a radical colouring: DAguiar is learned; he is also wry, alert to the false notes in history and what follows from them. The world map / Turned from red to brown to black / And blue, drained of empire. And he is passionate, responding always to the deep feelings of others, from desire to love, elegy to celebration. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. In her long experimental poem "Concerning History" from her 1998 collection "Praises", Elizabeth Jennings asks, "Does history tell love-stories?". The answer as she, like her mentor Robert Graves, knows is yes, if the poet listens carefully, out of crisis, out of innocence and out of religious faith emerge love stories. Like Rilke, her task is to praise, as a lover praises, the things made, the makers and the Maker. All of Elizabeth Jennings's later poetry has been an act of prayer and praise. Things are no longer overlooked, the daily world is suffused with another light, ancient and steadily sourced. Her sonnets, sequences, lyric poems and elegies are the work of a writer endlessly curious about the human creature and its spiritual dimensions. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The Ark is Peter Scupham's latest collection of poems, following his Selected Poems and Watching the Perseids , both published by OUP in 1990. The poems explore questions hovering on the borderlines of `is' and `seems', life and death, truth and lies. His Ark is steered to `its safe and certain loss' with a freight of dreams, memories, terrors, gifts; it is a habitation that carries him through varied landscapes and weathers to a possible Ararat. Three very different sequences hold the collection together: an experimental sequence, `Accident', followed by `Annunciations', and `A Habitat', a group of poems loosely surrounding the retrieval of an old house from its ghostly past. This book is intended for readers of comtemporary poetry. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…
