This book explores the vocabulary which has grown up around it. Entries include words unique to jazz ("bebop", Dixieland", "ragtime"); ordinary words with specific jazz meanings ("cool", "jam", "stride"); musical terms adopted by jazz ("bar", "rhythm", "swing"); instruments associated with jazz ("alto", "clarinet", "trombone"); nicknames of musicians ("Bird", "Duke", "Satchmo"); place-names lined to movements in jazz ("Dial", "Okeh", "Savoy") and notable venues ("Birdland", "Cotton Club", "Minton's"). Although The Brontes have long fascinated readers of fiction and biography, their poetry was all too little known until this pioneering selection by Stevie Davies, the novelist and critic. Charlotte (1816-1855) is certainly a competent poet, and Anne (1820-1849) developed a distinctive voice, while Emily (1818-1848) is one of great women poets in English. All three sisters, as Stevie Davies remarks in her introduction, were Romantic in inspiration, writing poetry of passionate personal feeling and of pure imagination. they share certain themes - liberty, loneliness, love - and harbour the myth of a lost paradise. For critics like John Ruskin and Walter Pater, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1892) was one of the great creative figures of the day, a painter and a poet of major stature. Yeats and the young Pound regarded him as an exemplary figure of solitary dedication to art and beauty. Rossetti's most original work may have been in preparing the way for the modernists who in turn dethroned him. He called the sonnet "a moment's monument", and his best short lyrics are instants of compressed emotion cut free of time.
