This study documents how William Hart Coleridge, the first Anglican bishop of Barbados and the Leewards, executed the new mandate of the Anglican church between 1824 and 1842. When the British Government turned to the Established Church for assistance in the amelioration of the condition of the enslaved population in the West Indian colonies, two new Sees of Jamaica and Barbados and the Leeward Islands were created in 1824 and two new Bishops were appointed, Coleridge and Christopher Lipscomb. The book focuses on Coleridge's episcopate in Barbados, discussing the Colonial Church before his appointment, the circumstances of his appointment, his role, and the question of his jurisdiction; how he increased accommodation for worshipers by providing Chapels of Ease and Chapel Schools; how he set up the administration in his diocese, recruited clergy, and provided training by reorganizing Codrington College; his work in education, especially among the working class; how he guided the pastoral care of the Church, especially for the enslaved population; his involvement in emancipation and apprenticeship and his promotion of social institutions to help emancipated slaves live as free citizens; and his departure from the island and his diocese due to failing health, how it was administered in his absence, and its division into three Sees in 1842.

The Virgin Islands in the course of centuries have witnessed the coming and going of Ciboney, Arawak and Carib peoples, European discovery by Christopher Columbus, temporary occupation by pirates and adventurers, colonization, commercial and plantation development by Danes and other North European settlers, African slavery and its abolition, American purchase, colonial government, social and political change, and in recent years remarkable tourist and industrial developments. These and other topics have been narrated and interpreted by Dr. Isaac Dookhan in this first comprehensive history of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Dr. Dookhan is eminently well qualified for this undertaking. He was born in the British colony of British Guiana, now independent Guyana, where he was educated in the public schools and served as teacher and headmaster. The author has drawn upon primary and secondary sources in recounting the experience of the Virgin Islands and their peoples. He is concerned with successive waves of immigrants, how they affected the physical environment and cultural life of the islands, the impact of international wars and politics, commodity price movements, and technological changes.

The tourists played thirteen matches during August and September; they won six, lost five and two were drawn. The first match was played against the Montreal Cricket Club, 16-17 August 1886. It ended in a draw after which the West Indians moved on to Ottawa, Toronto and Hamilton. They arrived in the United States to play several matches in Philadelphia where the cricket culture was well established. Local clubs proved too strong an opposition for the tourists. The press was encouraging but made it clear that the islanders were out of their depth. It was an important tour for the first West Indians cricketers. It was the first international step in an apprenticeship that lasted decades. The English decided, finally, to host the West Indians in 1900. This book speaks to the Canadian and American beginning of the West Indian cricket culture that was to emerge a century later as the most powerful performance force the game had ever seen.

The A to Z of Industrial Relations in the Caribbean Workplace is a revision and expansion of the earlier successful publication of ""A-Z of Industrial Relations Practices at the Workplace"" by George Phillip. It comes against the background of a new era in Caribbean economic history and experience. Designed for both managers and workers in this new order, the A to Z offers useful strategies for understanding and handling absenteeism, strikes, fighting on the job, productivity and wage compensation. It emphasizes that the key to productive and positive relationship between managers and workers is the establishment of mutual trust in the workplace. This new project also recognizes and highlights the modern trend in disputes resolution, the preference for conciliation and alternative disputes resolution methods over litigation. The Caribbean's social and economic history has been fraught with conflict and confrontation, and as such, the region faces a particularly difficult challenge to use a more cooperative approach to resolving industrial relations problems. The Industrial Disputes Tribunal of Jamaica and the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago have been highlighted for purposes of comparison and contrast. This feature has also been complemented with a selection of industrial relations cases from Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago, suitably summarized and analysed. The A to Z is an excellent practitioner's guide as well as reference and guide for academics.
