Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Ibatoulline, Bagram Ilustrador. Paperback. Instantly engrossing, free of self-pity, and resonant with resilience and gratitude . . . A powerful introduction to the American immigrant story. Publishers Weekly (starred review)When a little girl visits her great-grandfather, she asks about the collection of matchboxes harboring objects she can hold in her hand, each one evoking a memory. Together they tell of his journey from Italy to a new country, before he could read and write: the olive pit his mother gave him to suck on when there wasnt enough food; a bottle cap he saw on his way to the boat; a ticket still retaining the thrill of his first baseball game. Newbery Medalist Paul Fleischman and acclaimed illustrator Bagram Ibatoulline tell a breathtaking immigration tale with appeal across generations. Follow a girl's perusal of her great-grandfather's collection of matchboxes and small curios that document his poignant immigration journey from Italy to a new country. While his brothers and sisters nestle close to their mother hen, this little chick struts off on his own to make some new friends in the farmyard. And he has a wonderful time of it - sliding off the back of a shiny pink pig, hopping along with frogs, skipping with a flock of frisky sheep, and imitating all the sounds these animals make. Full of playful detail, John Lawrences bold, energetic engravings will keep toddlers smiling, long after the oinking, mooing, baaing, and quacking are over. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Byrd, Robert Ilustrador. Paperback. "Anyone with an interest in archaeology or in liars and braggarts will be drawn in by this slim biography of the hyper-imaginative Schliemann." Bulletin of the Center for Childrens Books (starred review)From Newbery Medal-winning author Laura Amy Schlitz comes an engaging illustrated biography of Heinrich Schliemann, a nineteenth-century archaeologist who most believe did find the ancient city of Troy. This engrossing tale paints a portrait of contradictions a man at once stingy and lavishly generous, a scholar both shrewd and reckless, a speaker of twenty-two languages and a man with a funny habit of taking liberties with the truth. Laura Amy Schlitz and Robert Byrd open a discussion about how history sometimes comes to be written, and how it sometimes needs to be changed.Back matter includes source notes and a bibliography. "A Literary History of the Arabs" prepared especially for the students of Arabic, occupies an eminent place in the literary field. The author strictly revised and presented it without alteration. In this book the chief aim of the author is to sketch in broad outlines what the Arabs thought, and to indicate as far as possible the influence which molded their thought. As the work especially devoted to the literature, almost all poetic conditions relating to the pre-Islamic time and after the Islamic period explained in detail. Reynold Alleyne Nicholson, or R. A. Nicholson (August 18, 1868 ? August 27, 1945), was an eminent English orientalist, scholar of both Islamic literature and Islamic mysticism, and widely regarded as one of the greatest Rumi scholars and translators in the English language.Son of paleontologist Henry Alleyne Nicholson, Nicholson was born in Keighley, Yorkshire, England and died in Chester, Cheshire, England. Educated at Aberdeen University and the University of Cambridge, Nicholson became lecturer in the Persian language (1902?26) and Sir Thomas Adams's Professor of Arabic at Cambridge (1926?1933). He is considered a leading scholar in Islamic literature and Islamic mysticism who exercised a lasting influence on Islamic studies He was able to study and translate major Sufitexts in Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman Turkish to English. Nicholson wrote two very influential books: Literary History of The Arabs (1907) and The Mystics of Islam (1914).
