Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Discovering what life was like for people in the first century churches became a passion for Susan Howell. Her research is focused on the first century lives: what were the "behind the scenes" things we don't know from casually reading the Bible? Focused on lessons from these churches, we ask how they apply to modern times. What can we do to avoid the trials and challenges of those in the first century? She questioned why the letters were written to those locations, which are in modern day Turkey, and not in Israel. As a man, Jesus never visited these churches, in fact, He never left Israel. Yet these churches open the book of Revelation, the final book in the Bible, given to John in a vision on the island of Patmos near the end of the first century. We know that Jesus was a great communicator. As He spoke to those who fish, He used fishing terms and to those who bake; baking terms. Susan wanted to know what Jesus was saying to the first century churches. What was happening in those towns, those churches? What did Jesus say to them in language and phrases they would understand? Susan has visited the excavated ruins of each of the seven churches in Turkey and studied each letter to the individual churches. She separated the letter verse by verse to learn what Jesus was saying. Her hope is that you, the reader, will discover what He is saying to them and in turn, to us. This will allow the reader the opportunity to spend quality time with Jesus. Read more Continue reading Read less.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good dj. First Edition. [spine turned, some dust-soiling to top of text block, small tape-stains at top and bottom edges of both covers (from where the jacket flaps were once affixed); the jacket has some staining (particularly on the flaps) and wrinkling, and internally bears extensive glue-stains, probably from a now-removed backing; it's possible that this might have at one time been a rental-library book, although none of the overt signs of such (stamping, etc.) are present; it's worth noting that although I've graded the jacket as merely "Good," its external appearance is actually better than that (see scanned image)]. "A factual mystery novel" with a topical twist, involving an American diplomat who is dispatched to Rio de Janeiro (with his wife) to establish better trade relations with Brazil -- but when hubby gets fingered as a murder suspect, the couple must work together to uncover a Nazi plot in order to find the real killer(s). (The book, by the way, is narrated by the wife.) This was the first of only two novels by this author, who the jacket blurb informs us was "the wife of the President of the United States Import-Export Bank," whose official duties had no doubt taken him and the missus to Brazil and other Latin American countries, giving her "plenty of opportunity to observe these matters at first hand." The Good Neighbor Policy, of course, was the official U.S. Government moniker for the Roosevelt adminstration's foreign policy in Latin America, the avowed purpose of which was to solidify American influence in the region through economic/trade agreements rather than overt intervention or interference with any country's domestic affairs -- a mission that took on new urgency when it became that the ascendant and belligerant Nazi Germany was making aggressive moves to gain a foothold in the Western Hemisphere by cultivating relations with certain South American countries. (It's worth noting that the book was published in August 1941, just a few months before Pearl Harbor, when the U.S. was still officially uninvolved in the war -- but irrespective of our purported neutrality, by that time pretty much everybody had figured out that the Nazis were the bad guys, and they'd begun to feature regularly as the villains in various pop-media incarnations.).
