Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Sermons by Thomas Hill. Hardcover in a 20th century binding. Leather spine with marbled paper boards. Very good condition. 1) The Beauty and Sweetness of and Olive Branch of Peace and Brotherly Accommodation. 40 pages. 2) Truth and Love Happily Married in the Saints, and in teh Churches of Christ. The Contract drawn in one of the Spittle Sermons. 36 pages. 3) The Spring of Strengthening Grace in the Rock of Ages, Christ Jesus. 16 pages. 4) The Strength of the Saints to make Jesus Christ their Strength. 26 pages. 5) The Best and Worst of Paul. Title page followed by 12 page 'Letter to the Seniors of Trinitie Colledg in Cambridg.' 24 pages. 6) God's Eternal Preparations for his Dying Saints. 23 pages. Postscript makes reference to 'six plain sermons,' suggesting that though they are separately paginated, they may have been issue together. Each sermon (except the first) has its own title page and an unpaginated Epistle Dedicatory. First page present is part of the dedication for the first sermon. According to the record of the Microfilm Copy at the Folger, there should be 10 prefatory pages before the sermon, so there are 6 pages (3 leaves) missing here. There is a blank page before the "Best and Worst of Paul" which has a very early ownership signature on it, "Elizabeth Rosseter her Booke Six Sermons of Thomas Hils" The name Elizabeth is signed 2 other times on that page. At the front, following the marbled endpaper, there is a blank page with handwritten notes - an 1846 gift inscription from D. Brown & a pencil note saying the book was rebound in 1808 and again in 1969. The next page has a handwritten table of contents which might be from the 1808 binding, but it is not signed or dated. There are underlinings in pen in a couple of the sermons. The record for the Folger copy makes no mention of the "Letter to the Seniors," although the collation seems to include it. Thomas Hill was Master of Trinity College from 1645-1654, during which time he taught John Dryden, then a student there. This collection, though each individual sermon is dated 1648 seems to have been issued as a single volume in 1649 (According to WorldCat listings, which are scarce). The name in the book, Elisabeth Rosseter, calls up a world of possibility on google, but I have not identified her yet. Photos available on request. …
