Paperback. Condición: Good. It is widely known that Charles Dickens gave public readings of his works, and that those readings were enormously popular. Far less well known are the stories themselves; these were not, as is the modern fashion, taken verbatim from the published novels. Instead, Dickens trimmed, reworded, and re-shaped material from the novels to create stories that would be self-contained artistic entities. These concise "performance fictions," shaped in every way to be accessible to a broad audience, are in many ways an ideal introduction to Dickens's work for the modern reader. Four of the most successful of these short works have been selected for this volume, including "The Story of Little Dombey" (perhaps the most emotionally affecting of all the readings, and described by Dickens as his "greatest triumph everywhere") and the violent and suspenseful "Sikes and Nancy" (Dickens's overpowering performances of which were said to have contributed to his death). Provided in the contextual materials is a selection of reviews and contemporary descriptions that comment on Dickens's manner of performance and audience reception. A brief excerpt from Dombey and Son is also included, illustrating the extensive revision process that led to "The Story of Little Dombey.".…

Paperback. Condición: Good. In recent decades, the contested areas of English usage have grown both larger and more numerous. English speakers argue about whether we should say manor humanity, fisheror fisherman; whether we ought to speak of people as being disabled, or challenged, or differently abled; whether it is acceptable to say that's so gay. More generally, we ask, can we use language in ways that avoid giving expression to prejudices embedded within it? Can the words we use help us point a way towards a better world? Can we ask such questions with appropriate seriousness while remaining open-minded--and while retaining our sense of humor? To all these questions this concise and user-friendly guide answers yes, while offering clear-headed discussions of many of the key issues.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. The purpose of The Broadview Anthology of Poetry is to present a wide range of poetry written in English. [Though the poems are arranged chronologically], we have compiled not a historical survey, but rather a collection of poems that represent a variety of times, places and English-speaking cultures. Our selection process was guided by a wish to combine works long accepted as part of the English-language 'canon' with material not always well represented in anthologies--such as, most notably, the poetry of women since the seventeenth century. Another notion implicit in the framing of this anthology is that English-language poetry has dramatically expanded within the last century. Writers in Australia and New Zealand, Canada, India, Africa and the Caribbean all hold in common with writers in Britain and the United States an English-Language tradition that helped to shape their history and their institutions, and that laid the groundwork for new writings. In trying to include as wide a selection as possible of representative work.we have had to leave out several well-known long poems. In almost all cases, however, we have chosen to represent a poet by several poems, inviting readers to take a broader view of a given writer's work and ways of thinking. -- from the Preface.…

Paperback. Condición: Fair. Both a witty satire of literary cliché and a tender meditation on the varieties of love, As You Like Itcontinues to be one of Shakespeare's most beloved and widely performed comedies. In the introduction to this new edition, David Bevington traces the complex relationships between the characters in the play, and explores the history of its criticism from Samuel Johnson to the twenty-first century. As part of the newly launched Broadview Press / Internet Shakespeare Editions series, this edition features a variety of interleaved materials--from facsimile pages, diagrams, and musical scores to illustrations and extended discussions of myth and folklore--that provide a context for the social and cultural allusions in the play. Appendices offer excerpts from Shakespeare's key sources and influences, including Thomas Lodge's Rosalind and Ben Jonson's Every Man in His Humor. A collaboration between Broadview Press and the Internet Shakespeare Editions project at the University of Victoria, the editions developed for this series have been comprehensively annotated and draw on the authoritative texts newly edited for the ISE. This innovative series allows readers to access extensive and reliable online resources linked to the print edition.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. From nothing else that I have ever read have I gotten what every book of Conrad has given me. -Ernest Hemingway, Transatlantic Review, 1924What does it mean to give oneself to a tempting darkness? To a tempting character? What happens when that power that once tempted the mind and then was received by the mind, finally betrays that mind? Dark thoughts indeed. -From Schwager's IntroductionThe steaming jungles of Africa contain enough bloody ivory to bankroll an empire, but it takes a strong Company agent to manage the climate and the unhappy native laborers, many of whom are still cannibals. The most successful agent of them all is the disconcerting man known as Kurtz. But Kurtz has been sick, and his efficient (or brutal, depending on who is asked) methods can't be ignored any longer. So Charles Marlow leaves the tidy offices of London with a new steamboat command, and sets out to find this Mr. Kurtz and bring him back to civilization-out of the disease, neglect, and enveloping presence of an immense heart of darkness. This disruptive Canon Classic is a veiled look at imperialistic atrocities and the dark desires at the heart of every human venture. The Canon Classics series presents the most definitive works of Western literature in a colorful, well-crafted, and affordable way. Unlike many other thrift editions, our classics are printed on thicker text stock and feature individualized designs that prioritize readability by means of proper margins, leading, characters per line, font, trim size, etc. Each book's materials and layout combine to make the classics a simple and striking addition to classrooms and homes, ideal for introducing the best of literary culture and human experience to the next generation. This Worldview Edition features an introduction divided into sections on The World Around, About the Author, What Other Notables Said, Setting, Characters, & Plot Summary, Worldview Analysis, and 21 Discussion Questions & Answers.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Tragedy of Mariam, the Fair Queen of Jewry is a Jacobean closet drama by Elizabeth Tanfield Cary. First published in 1613, it was the first work by a woman to be published under her real name. Never performed during Cary's lifetime, and apparently never intended for performance, the Senecan revenge tragedy tells the story of Mariam, the second wife of Herod. The play exposes and explores the themes of sex, divorce, betrayal, murder, and Jewish society under Herod's tyrannous rule. The comprehensive, illustrated introduction discusses the play in the context of closet drama, female dramatists and in terms of the religious issues it explores, seeing Mariam as a martyr figure. The on-page commentary notes provide further close analysis and explanation, creating an ideal edition for study and teaching.…
