Pictorial Wrappers. Condición: As New. First Printing. First printing. Paperback. [Originally published in UK by The Bodley Head, 1949). As new copy. Introduction by Martin Edwards. LOCKED ROOM / IMPOSSIBLE CRIME. Listed in "Locked Room Murders" by Robert Adey, #213. Ever since she drove her best friend's fiance to kill himself,… Isabel Drew has been nicknamed Jezebel. She is domineering, arrogant, vain - and beautiful enough to get away with it. She is starring as a princess in a medieval pageant when her past catches up to her. On tiny slips of paper, threats appear, promising death to Isabel and those around her. Fearing she may be attacked, she invites the brilliant Inspector Cockrill to keep her safe after the performance. But her precautions come too late. During the first show, Isabel falls from her tower and is dead before she hits the ground. She was strangled, and the room she fell from was locked from the inside - a crime too daring to be possible. But Inspector Cockrill saw it all, and unraveling the impossible is his specialty. "This is a projection of the 'sealed room' mystery. The scene of the murder was bounded on one side by a stage, under the observation of several thousand pairs of eyes; and on the other by a locked door, with somebody sitting on guard on the other side of it. The murderer must have been within these confines. And the place is as bare as a biscuit box, so that there is nowhere where he can possibly have hidden, or remain hidden." from the introduction. Book.

cloth, dust jacket. 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. 248 pages with 40 b/w illustrations. with The Publishing Pathways Series Cumulative Index. Part of the Publishing Pathways Series. Reading, and the manifold signs of reading, have become one of the most dynamic areas of research in book history. The reader as consumer and owner, as we…ll as participant in the construction of new meanings, is the subject of these original essays. Specialists in literature, art history and book history investigate the annotations, marginal marks, extra-illustration and other forms of evidence left by readers. Through an examination of the book as a physical object, the contributors provide a range of intriguing insights into the ways in which this internalized and ephemeral activity can be understood in the context of book-trade history.

Soft cover. Condición: As New. A lovely clean fresh copy that APPEARS NEW AND UNREAD! Iain Fenlon is a British musicologist and cultural historian whose scholarly work has focused extensively on music in Renaissance Italy, bringing to this field a combination of deep archival research, broad cultural historical awareness, and an… ability to situate musical culture within its wider social, political, and intellectual contexts. He has been associated with the University of Cambridge and has established himself as one of the leading authorities on Italian Renaissance music and its relationship to the broader cultural life of the period, producing a body of scholarship that has been influential in shaping how musicologists and historians understand the role of music in early modern Italian society. Music Print and Culture in Early Sixteenth Century Italy derives from the Panizzi Lectures, a prestigious series delivered at the British Library in London that invites distinguished scholars to present original research on subjects related to the history of the book, manuscript culture, and the broader history of written and printed communication. The lecture series is named in honor of Antonio Panizzi, the nineteenth century librarian and scholar who played a transformative role in developing the collections and intellectual resources of the British Museum Library, and the association with this legacy gives the lectures and their published versions a particular connection to the history of the book and the material culture of textual and musical transmission. The subject of the lectures and resulting publication sits at the intersection of musicology, book history, and Renaissance cultural history, examining how the development of music printing in early sixteenth century Italy transformed the production, distribution, and consumption of musical culture during one of the most dynamic and consequential periods in the history of Western music. The early sixteenth century was a period of extraordinary musical creativity and cultural vitality in Italy, encompassing the flowering of the frottola and madrigal traditions, the activity of major composers working at the courts and chapels of the Italian states, and the emergence of Venice as the dominant center of music printing in Europe. The development of music printing technology and the commercial music publishing industry in Venice, associated above all with the pioneering work of Ottaviano Petrucci who produced the first printed polyphonic music books in the first decade of the sixteenth century, represents a transformation in musical culture of fundamental importance, making musical works available in multiple identical copies to a wider audience than manuscript transmission could ever have reached and creating new commercial and cultural relationships between composers, publishers, patrons, and the consuming public for printed music. Fenlon examines how print culture shaped and was shaped by the broader musical and intellectual life of the period, addressing questions about patronage, the social circulation of musical repertoire, the relationship between printed and manuscript sources, and the ways in which the materiality of the printed music book itself carried cultural meaning and reflected the values and aspirations of those who produced and consumed it. The analytical framework draws on both musicological expertise and the methods of book history and material culture studies, reflecting the genuinely interdisciplinary character of the subject and the breadth of Fenlon's scholarly formation and interests. The Panizzi Lectures format, which typically results in a relatively compact published volume derived from a series of public lectures rather than an exhaustive monograph, gives the published work a focused and essayistic quality that makes it accessible to readers beyond the immediate specialist audience while still engaging seriously with the scholarly questions at its heart.

Paperback. Condición: Fine. (UK) Presumed 1st of this facsmile edition, No markings, Fine. Blue and white wraps, paginated in sections according to the facsimile books, about 200 pages. The Works of the Right Honourable The Earls of Rochester and Roscommon, the third edition, London: E. Curll, 1709; Miscellaneous works of John l…ate Earl of Rochester; Miscellaneous Works by the Right Honourable The Earl of Roscommon, London: MDCCIX. These are early 18th century poems and dramatic pieces. John Wilmot was an English poet and courtier of King Charles II's Restoration court. The Restoration reacted against the "spiritual authoritarianism" of the Puritan era. Rochester embodied this new era, and he became as well known for his rakish lifestyle as his poetry, although the two were often interlinked. I believe the Prologue to Pompey is the work of the Fourth Earl of Roscommon, Wentworth Dillon. (2.5 JM HOZ 401/4 Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾".
