During this time, as a result of the efforts of asthma researchers in many disciplines, there has been an unprecedented increase in our knowledge about asthma as a disease and about the pharmacology of the existing anti-asthma drugs. This increase in knowledge should have generated information from which directions for future anti-asthma drug research and development might be predicted. Thus, we felt it was timely to invite a group of leading international pharmacologists to meet together on the occasion of the Xth International Congress of Pharmacology, being held for the first time in Australia (in Sydney August 23- 28th, 1987), for a satellite meeting to discuss the topic 'New drugs for asthma'. The proceedings of this small workshop are presented in this book. The meeting was unique in that leading pharmacologists from most of the pharmaceutical companies involved in the development of anti-asthma drugs were present. All participants, whether from the industry or from academia, were active researchers involved in providing the animal data and in carrying out human pharmacological studies, on new anti asthma drugs. Mu PAD wurde als paralleles System entworfen. Der AnstoB zu Entwurf und Implementation von MuPAD entsprang dem Wunsch, unsere Algorithmen zur Untersuchung der gruppentheoretischen Struktur nicht linearer Systeme effizient und schnell zu handhaben. The theory developed centers around two major problems concerning matrices of which part of the entries are given and the others are unspecified. The first is a classification problem and aims at a simplification of the given part with the help of admissible similarities. The results here may be seen as a far reaching generalization of the Jordan canonical form. The second problem is called the eigenvalue completion problem and asks to describe all possible eigenvalues and their multiplicities of the matrices which one obtains by filling in the unspecified entries. Both problems are also considered in an infinite dimensional operator framework. Angiogenesis is required for continued growth of most solid tumors, and provides a mechanism by which the stroma may continue to grow along with the tumor cells. Although endothelial cells are stromal cells, they express a number of epithelial characteristics including (i) epithelial-like tight junctions and junctional proteins; (ii) the ability to organize into flat tened tubular structures; (iii) the c-met receptor protein; and (iv) biologic responsiveness to SF. It is, perhaps, not surprising that vascular endothe lial cells may both produce and respond to SF in different situations. 'Epithelialness' may be defined in two ways: (i) expression of generic epithelial structures and proteins (eg., specialized junctions, junctional proteins [eg., cadherins, ZOl], cytokeratins); and (ii) production of specific differentiated products (eg., milk proteins by mammary epithelia, renin by renal tubular epithelia of the juxtaglomerular apparatus). Schur in 1917 concerning an interpolation problem of C. Caratheodory. What followed there appears to be a truly fascinating story which, however, should be told by a professional historian. Here we provide the reader with a simplified version, mostly related to the contents of the book. In the twenties, thf~ theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle was developed by G. Szego and the formulae relating these polynomials involved num bers (usually called Szego parameters) similar to the Schur parameters. Mean while, R. Nevanlinna and G. Pick studied the theory of another interpolation problem, known since then as the Nevanlinna-Pick problem, and an algorithm similar to Schur's one was obtained by Nevanlinna. In 1957, Z. In this monograph we focus on formal models representing contact problems for elastic and elastoplastic plates and shells. New approaches open up new fields for research. For example, in crack theory a systematic treatment of mathematical modelling and optimization of problems with cracks is required. Similarly, sensitivity analysis of solutions to problems subjected to perturbations, which forms an important part of the problem solving process, is the source of many open questions. In particular, the webs and flanges of beams, simple walls, brackets, bracing beams and joints of frames are investigated. By this means, the majority of design cases are already covered. In reality, all structural components are three-dimensional. Here, however, components are considered either directly as two-dimensional plate elements (i. e. the plane stress condition with no variation of stress over the thickness of the element) or they are subdivided into several plates. Since two-dimensional structural elements are statically redundant, it is pOSSible for a particular loading to be in equilibrium with many (theoretically an infinite number of) stress states. If the lower bound method of the theory of plasticity is employed, then an admissible stress field or any combination of such stress fields may be selected. In chapter 4 it is shown that this method is suitable for the design of reinforced concrete structures, and the consequence of the choice of the final structural system on the structural behavior is dealt with in detail. On the other hand, integral equations are of practical interest because of the 'boundary integral equation method', which transforms partial differential equations on a domain into integral equations over its boundary. This book grew out of a series of lectures given by the author at the Ruhr-Universitat Bochum and the Christian-Albrecht-Universitat zu Kiel to students of mathematics. The contents of the first six chapters correspond to an intensive lecture course of four hours per week for a semester. Readers of the book require background from analysis and the foundations of numeri cal mathematics. Knowledge of functional analysis is helpful, but to begin with some basic facts about Banach and Hilbert spaces are sufficient. The theoretical part of this book is reduced to a minimum; in Chapters 2, 4, and 5 more importance is attached to the numerical treatment of the integral equations than to their theory. With this legal framework, the possibilities for protection of nature and landscape have now considerably improved in Switzerland. The most important aims of the Federal Law on Water Protection are to safeguard the natural habitats of the native flora and fauna and water as the habitat of aquatic organisms. This includes not only the preservation or restoration of water quality in lakes and rivers, but also, in rivers used for hydroelectricity, irrigation or as industrial or other water supplies, the maintenance of sufficient water to fulfill the minimal requirements for fish. However, good quality water in sufficient quan tities alone is not enough to guarantee the survival of fish. Intact fish habitats comprise various phYsical structures including plenty of hiding places, hunting grounds, reproduction and nursery areas within suitable distances from each other. This third aspect of conservation and restoration of aquatic habitats is a central point in the new Federal Law on Fisheries.
