Much of this growth in the traditionally separate sciences of chemistry and molecular gerontology occurred independently, with little interaction or communi cation between the scientists working in these two fields. In view of the growing maturity of the two fields and the potential importance of advancing our knowledge in the area of oxidative stress and aging, we perceived a critical need to organize an international conference the 'First Inter national Conference on Oxidative Stress and Aging' in Hawaii in 1994 to bring together the world's leading scientists in the fields of reactive oxygen species and molecular gerontology. The objective of this conference was to provide a unique opportunity for scholars working in these two related and rapidly growing fields to participate in the exchange, integration, and synthesis of new concepts and ideas, to engage in constructive criticism and to initiate new collaborative research projects. The conference focused on the molecular and cellular aspects of aging as related to oxidative stress. It was one of the largest and most comprehensive international conferences held in molecular gerontology. These Proceedings form arecord of most of the papers pre sented at the Symposium. The classical anti-histamines, now known as H -antagonists have 1 been the result of intensive research in the 1950s and 1960s. The new, so-called non-sedating H1-antagonists, which became available in the 1980s, could be d'eveloped mainly due to insights into structural features causing the sedating effects of the older compounds. In the 1970s the H2-receptors became important targets for developing new anti-ulcer agents. The H2-antagonist story is a stimulating example of modern research on pharmacology and medicinal chemistry. Unknown and new properties of histamine and histaminergic systems came to the attention of the pharmacologists and medicinal chemists in the 1980s. The role of histamine as a neurotransmitter, the existence of a presynaptic receptor (H ) controlling the release of histamine 3 and other neurotransmitters, and the particular character of this receptor became important as the possibilities to design new therapeutic agents were realized. Recently, other roles of the histaminergic systems have been suggested. In the last two decades, some extensions of the finite difference method to irregular networks have been described and applied to solving boundary value problems in science and engineering. For instance, 'box integration methods' have been widely used in electro nics. There are several papers on this topic, but a comprehensive study of these methods does not seem to have been attempted. The purpose of this book is to provide a systematic treatment of a generalized finite difference method on irregular networks for solving numerically elliptic boundary value problems. Thus, several disadvan tages of the classical finite difference method can be removed, irregular networks of triangles known from the finite element method can be applied, and advantageous properties of the finite difference approxima tions will be obtained. Their existence was implied by Fatt and Katz in 1952, when they described the action of acetylcholine at the muscle endplate as producing 'a large nonselective increase of ion permeability, i.e. a short circuit'. The purpose of this book is to provide a systematic treatment of a generalized finite difference method on irregular networks for solving numerically elliptic boundary value problems. Thus, several disadvan tages of the classical finite difference method can be removed, irregular networks of triangles known from the finite element method can be applied, and advantageous properties of the finite difference approxima tions will be obtained. The second international conference on 'New Drugs in Allergy and Asthma' was held in Davos on 8-10 July 1992. There were six sessions with specialist chairmen: PDE isoenzymes (c. D. Nicholson), atopy and the environment (8. Villiger), adhesion molecules (R. H. Gundel), cytokines (M. Baggiolini), airway hyperreactivity (S. Makino) and neurotransmitters (J. G. Widdicombe). The success of the meeting was ensured by a high standard of presentation, with extensive reference to recent experimental data. The chairmen were instrumental in fostering stimulating discussion periods, that considerably enlivened the meeting. The classical anti-histamines, now known as H -antagonists have 1 been the result of intensive research in the 1950s and 1960s. The new, so-called non-sedating H1-antagonists, which became available in the 1980s, could be d'eveloped mainly due to insights into structural features causing the sedating effects of the older compounds. In the 1970s the H2-receptors became important targets for developing new anti-ulcer agents. The H2-antagonist story is a stimulating example of modern research on pharmacology and medicinal chemistry. Unknown and new properties of histamine and histaminergic systems came to the attention of the pharmacologists and medicinal chemists in the 1980s. The role of histamine as a neurotransmitter, the existence of a presynaptic receptor (H ) controlling the release of histamine 3 and other neurotransmitters, and the particular character of this receptor became important as the possibilities to design new therapeutic agents were realized. Recently, other roles of the histaminergic systems have been suggested. Walter had to report on the death of five colleagues who had been active in the area of inequali ties and who had served the mathematical community: P.R. Beesack, G. Polya, D.K. Ross, R. Bellman, G. Szegö. He made special mention of G. Polya, who had been the last surviving author of the book InequaZities (Cambridge University Press, 1934), who died at the age of 97 years and whose many and manifold contributions to mathematics will be recorded elsewhere, in due course. Inequalities continue to play an important and significant role in nearly all areas of mathematics. The interests of the participants to this conference reflected the many different fields in which both classical and modern inequalities continue to influence developments in mathematics.
