Fine in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear. From dust jacket: Fascinating is the word for logging operations in the wooded mountains, especially so when steam trains are involved, the good smell of burning wood, the sound of the steam whistles and the thunder of falling trees. Close to California's Mother Lode country, the Michigan-California Lumber Co. operated for many years with an interesting combination of narrow gauge and standard gauge equipment plus an ingenious cable arrangement to bridge a deep gorge. The machinery involved included steam donkeys, track autos, steam tractors and even a snow-plow. In this book an album section, made up of choice historical photographs, gives a most detailed record of changing equipment which shows the wear and tear it sustained in this rugged service. Here you will see all the involvements of feeding logs continuously to the mill where lumber was cut and dried to be used in the building program of a fast-growing region. It was a matter of pride that they milled first-=class sugar pine lumber and sold the lesser grade materials to a contiguous operation which produced boxes and crates. The company was fortunate in that its many devotees and especially its management enjoyed keeping a fine pictorial record. Consequently the author had excellent material from which to choose to illustrate his precisely researched history.
