Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Paperback Edition. Paperback. Ageing For Beginners. Understanding Everyday Experience. In our society old age is pitied, not honoured; it is dreaded more than disease or disablement because it is everyone's eventual fate. Fear of ageing casts a shadow over many people's lives - those anxious about their parents, or already worried in middle age that they have passed their own peak of achievement. In this book the authors challenges many of our assumptions about old age, especially the popular image of older people as a 'social problem'. She shows by many delightful examples aht our later years can be richly rewardigng and enjoyable, and that people are as much individuals at 70, with different tastes, abilities, wants and needs, as they are at 17. Ageing is not a 'condition' to be treated by doctors or social workers but a process that brings with it possibilities of new experience and achievement. The book looks at the practical aspectes of retirement - where to live, friends, travel, resources, voluntary work, leisure pursuits and paid jobs - and shows that older people can and should be assets to the community rather than its dependants. 215 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Cloth. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 3rd Edition. Hardback. An Introduction to the Administrative History of Mediaeval England. Wear to edges of D/J. Browning to spine of D/J. Confining his theme to this history of the central executive power, Professor Chrimes examines the origins of administrative organizations in the royal household, the emergence and use of the royal seals, and the growth and inter-relationships of the Exchequer and the financial systems, of Chancery, the Chamber and the Wardrobe. He avoides 'those matters of antiquarian interest which are apt to.beguil the footsteps of administrative historians', aiming instead to digest and interpret the multitude of scattered contriburions to the subject and to show what effect different political movements had on the central administrative system at different periods. The third edition has been brought further up to date by the addition of a bibliographical review of the literature on the subject published since 1959. 285 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. Reprint. Paperback some notes in pen and underlining.prev owners name inside This book addresses itself to fundamental questions. Is the state an independent entity above conflicts in society? Or is it enmeshed in those conflicts? Can we differentiate between types of state? Does the state diminish or increase freedom when it intervenes in our lives? In seven separate sections the editors examine classic conceptions of the state, the formation of modern states, the significance of citizenship, the roles of economy and capital, the interaction of power and legitimacy, states in relation to the world economy, and - finally - the future of the state. Exttracts from the work of Machiavelli, Rousseau, Hobbes and other major theorists introduce the history of the idea of the state; essential contemporary articles by Anderson, Poulantzas, E. P. Thomspn, Nozick and others focus on teh nature and development of the state. Introductions and anlalyses by the editors themselves provide a continuous critical narrative, linking the separate themes. The whole is preface by David Held's substantial introductory essay, which provides a far-reaching analysis of the concept of the modern state - an outstanding introduction to the subject. The scope and authority of this book make it an unparalleled reader for all students of politics and sociaology. 629 pp (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Paperback Edition. Paperback. Couple of creases to cover. Over $300 billion a year is now spent worldwide on computer and communications hardward and software. Yet the human, organizational and social factors shaping this far-reaching revolution have scarcely been analysed and are little understood. Our technical knowledge about computers is not matched by a knowledge of their social consequences and possibilities. The contributors to this volume have come together to help rectify this imbalance with a challenging reappraisal of the information technology revolution. As the leading experts in the field, they are able to show that many companies and organizations are not using computers effectively and therefore much of the huge expenditure on IT is being wasted. While it is clear from the studies reported here the economic payoff from IT has been slow in coming, the euphoria that greeted the arrival of the microchip in the 1970s has also been displaced by a more critical assessment of the social benefits of computerization. Successive authors in this volume debunk popular notions, such as 'artifical intelligence', the 'electronic cottage', 'teledemocracy' and 'post-industrial society', while others describe the growing ethical problems of the IT revolution, like computer crime, workplace surveillance, intellectual property rights and government control of information. The author's book is a development of his earlier highly-successful athologies and is a major statement of the increaing awareness that what decides the success or failure of computer systems in all contexts is the 'human factor'. 548 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Soft cover. Condición: Good. 1st Trade Paperback. Trade Paperback. Ticks in margin in pencil to some pages. Remainder mark to edge. Crease to front cover. This new textbook surveys the development of British politics in Parliament, in the parties and amongst the elctorate. Avoiding a merely facual and chronological account, the author concentrates on probles of interpretation and analysis raised by recent work in the field. He provides a critical guide for the student to the growing and often overwhelming body of specialist literature. Each chapter is supported by a full descriptive bibliography and guide to further reading. Throughout, the book examines political change at three distinct levels: Parliament, the electorate and, between these, party activists and organizers. In so doing, it avoids the narrow high politics perspective of some other accounts. The author shows how politics gradually came to revolve less around the moral-politicals issues of the Victorian era and more around the economic and social role of the state. He considers the fate of the three main parties throuhgout the period and concludes with a discussion of the emergence of a two-party system by the time of the Second World War. 337 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

After a short gweneral account of the Zadokite Work, fragments of which were found half a century ago, and of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which were found in 1947, Professor Rowley gives a critical review of all the theories of the date of these texts and of the sect from which they came, and finally offers his own view on these questions. His book gives a more extensive survey of the discussion these texts have provoked than can be found in any other work, and it rests on a fuller control of the vast literature written about them than anything so far published. 133 pp. ( We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. and scholarly books etc.).

Cloth. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. Frank Sidgwick's Diary. Previous owners name stamp printed small to title page. Slight shelf wear to top edge of D/J. Some seventy years ago A. H. Bullen, scholar, editor, publisher and enthusiast of Elizabethan literature, resolved in fulfilment of a dream to set up a press in Stratford-upon-Avon to print an edition of Shakespeare's Works in his native twon. To that end Bullen's young publishing partner, Frank Sidwick, was seconded to Stratford to set up, and organize, a press and start printing the edition of Shakespeare. From 25th May 1904 to 23rd March 1905 Sidwick kept a diary revealing his admirable versatility in many and varied activities. His account of the setting up and day-to-day running of a small printing firm is a document of historical importance, in strange contrast with conditions in the printing trade today. This Diary was discovered recently by his daughter, Mrs. Ann Baker, and is published with an Introduction by her. Also included are H. F. B. Brett-Smith's noble tribute to Bullen in the Foreword to Shakespeare's Sonnets (1921) and Paul Morgan's account of 'Bullen and the Shakespeare Head Press' in a paper read to the Birmingham Bibliographical Society in 1972. Noth and von Rad reached the conclusion that the Sinair tradition is distinct from that of the Exodus. The author brilliantly contends for the opposite view; tracing the influence of the pattern of the Hittite treaties in all strands of the Covenent tradition, he demonstrates that the calling-out of Israel and her Covenant obligations are interwoven from the beginning. Cult and history are independent and each should be given due consideration. 191 pp.

Small mark to front D/J. Browning to spine of D/J. This work contains an introduction and line by line commentary on the text. The books of the Maccabees are the first chapter in the history of the encounter of Judaism with Hellenism; they describe the failure of a premature attempt at synthesus and the apparently successful resistance of militant Judaism. Professor Toynbee has described this as 'a fierce revolt against the Hellenizing policy of a Greek King of South-West Asia'. The author argues that this 'Helleneizing policy' was something more subtle than it is commonly conceived to have been. 207 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
