ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1973). (1946) 1973 reprint. Small 8vo (127 x 191mm). Ppiv,156. B/w illustrations. Red boards, spine titled in gilt. Cloth slightly stained, spotting to edges. Good copy in spine-faded, price-clipped dust-wrapper. "The heronry at Mootwood where Garth is reared cannot be his home for ever. At Blaefen he discovers the lethal powers of his spear-bill and is then nudged out to seek his own means of survival. But his staple food lies beneath the ice and snow of a hard winter, and he drifts into a stupor, close to death. He comes across an eel, equally comatose, which he greedily consumes. In the warmth of Garth's crop its teeth tear open the soft skin, and only a chance intervention of Man saves him. His health restored, he goes out again into the wild, by saltmarsh and mudflat, by river and tarn, to live by his spear. At maturity he takes Grold for his mate, but a final encounter with a gyr falcon leads to a dramatic end." .

Blue cloth, spine titled in gilt. Very good in very faded, price-clipped dust-wrapper. The story of a kestrel and his struggle with nature red in tooth and claw. "Klee and Hirra are the only survivors from a brood of four, ravaged in a hailstorm which plucks out one of Hirra's eyes. Klee's mother teaches him to hunt from the sky; one demonstration and it is the last he sees of her. His early life is marred by a blast from a shotgun, but he recovers and goes on to survive his first winter. In the spring he mates with Frikka and they settle to rear their brood in a hollow ash tree. Frikka is killed in a trap, and Klee, blindly seeking a new mate, meets again Hirra the One-Eyed. A severe winter almost kills him and leads to his captivity. But he regains his freedom, and once more returns to the world of Krark and Tchatchekki and Hoo. Based on the author's extensive field observations." .

hardcover. Condición: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1973). (1921) 1973 2nd UK edition. 8vo (138 x 222mm). Ppviii,244. B/w plates after old illustrations, decorative initials, bibliography. Brown boards, gilt titling on spine. Ex-library copy with stamps to title-page, ex-libris book-plate to end-paper, picture of author tipped onto paste-down else very good in spine-faded and clipped dust-wrapper. A good guide the early angling literature of Britain and of France, with a useful bibliography of English and French angling books. "This excellent book (which has become a fishing classic) traces the art of fly fishing from its beginnings in the fifteenth century. Major Hills has succeeded in identifying almost all the artificial flies mentioned by the early writers (including The Boke Of St. Albans), and his account of the evolution of rods, lines, reels and tackle is very complete. The advent of up-stream fishing and the dry fly are also dealt with at length." (Contemporary advertisement). "It covers the period from the close of the fifteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth, from the Treatyse to Andrew Lang. The story is very well told and must have involved considerable research. Generous in his appreciations, he can always be relied upon to give an unbiased judgement. The book sets a high standard and one can refer to him with confidence on moot points in angling literature on trout fishing." (Robb. Notable Angling Literature). .

New b/w photographs for this edition, illustrations. Black cloth, spine titled in gilt. Good-plus in used dust-wrapper. "Some consider Fly Fishing (1899) to be the best fishing book ever written. The volume deals with trout, sea trout and salmon. Grey places fishing for sea trout on a pinnacle, and describes the greatness of salmon fishing. On trout, he was the first writer of importance on the dry-fly who really knew what the wet-fly meant. Although modest, he was an expert angler, and he detailed much that is useful and instructive. His prose is clear and vigorous - the book is a literary achievement of high order." Hudson is remembered as a naturalist and a writer. He was above all a rambler, and it was this essential quality of being at ease in the wild which enabled him to capture the true spirit of the countryside and its wildlife. Hampshire was Hudson's cherished county. He extols the New Forest, heaps praise on the valleys of the Test and the Itchen and writes of many small Hampshire villages which are still as enchanting. Out of print for many years, this new edition has been illustrated with modern photographs. Countrylovers everywhere, particularly birdwatchers, will find a wealth of natural history and country lore which can be read again and again." .

ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1973). (1921) 1973 2nd UK edition. 8vo (138 x 222mm). Ppvi,230. B/w plates after old illustrations, decorative initials, bibliography. Brown cloth, spine titled in gilt. Some minor faults (clipped/owner's name). Good-plus in slightly spine-faded dust-wrapper. Notable Angling Literature). .
