Red boards, spine titled in gilt. Cloth slightly stained, spotting to edges. Good copy in spine-faded, price-clipped dust-wrapper. "The heronry at Mootwood where Garth is reared cannot be his home for ever. At Blaefen he discovers the lethal powers of his spear-bill and is then nudged out to seek his own means of survival. But his staple food lies beneath the ice and snow of a hard winter, and he drifts into a stupor, close to death. He comes across an eel, equally comatose, which he greedily consumes. In the warmth of Garth's crop its teeth tear open the soft skin, and only a chance intervention of Man saves him. His health restored, he goes out again into the wild, by saltmarsh and mudflat, by river and tarn, to live by his spear. At maturity he takes Grold for his mate, but a final encounter with a gyr falcon leads to a dramatic end." .

The advent of up-stream fishing and the dry fly are also dealt with at length." (Contemporary advertisement). "Some consider Fly Fishing (1899) to be the best fishing book ever written. The volume deals with trout, sea trout and salmon. Grey places fishing for sea trout on a pinnacle, and describes the greatness of salmon fishing. On trout, he was the first writer of importance on the dry-fly who really knew what the wet-fly meant. Although modest, he was an expert angler, and he detailed much that is useful and instructive. His prose is clear and vigorous - the book is a literary achievement of high order." Hudson is remembered as a naturalist and a writer. He was above all a rambler, and it was this essential quality of being at ease in the wild which enabled him to capture the true spirit of the countryside and its wildlife. Hampshire was Hudson's cherished county. He extols the New Forest, heaps praise on the valleys of the Test and the Itchen and writes of many small Hampshire villages which are still as enchanting. Out of print for many years, this new edition has been illustrated with modern photographs. Countrylovers everywhere, particularly birdwatchers, will find a wealth of natural history and country lore which can be read again and again." .
