A multitude of soldiers died there, some from wounds and amputations, others from the ravages of virulent epidemics. After a brief, post-war revival, the beautiful resort was mysteriously destroyed. From early times to years after the demise of the resort, local residents attributed unearthly hands to the strange happenings in that little valley, bounded as it was by Devil's Den Creek and a geological formation known as Lucifer's Armchair.
