Hardcover. Condición: New. 1st Edition. 444 pages : illustrations (some colour), facsimiles, portraits ; 26 cm. Summary:Shining Lights is the first critical anthology of Black women photographers active in the UK during the 1980s and 1990s, providing a richly illustrated overview of a significant and overlooked chapter of British photographic history. Seen through the lens of Britain's sociopolitical and cultural contexts, the publication tells a unique story from the dual perspectives of lived experience and historical investigation. Edited and researched by Joy Gregory, one of the period's most influential photographic artists, alongside art historian Taous Dahmani, who contributes a keynote essay. The pioneering and diverse work created by Black women practitioners in the UK over the course of these two decades marked an important juncture in both documentary and conceptual practices, including the experimental use of photomontage, self-portraiture, staged imagery, and photography in dialogue with other media. Shining Lights showcases the expertise and evolution of this work, illuminated by ephemera and archival material, new essays and roundtable conversations, foregrounding a variety of individual artistic developments as well as the communities fostered around them. Amongst the fifty-seven photographers included are Maxine Walker, Ingrid Pollard, Claudette Holmes, Roshini Kempadoo, Mohini Chandra, Carole Wright, Joy Gregory, Sutapa Biswas, Maud Sulter, Brenda Agard, Anita McKenzie, Mitra Tabrizian, Poulomi Desai, Virginia Nimarkoh, Jennie Baptiste, Nudrat Afza, Merle Van den Bosch, and Eileen Perrier. Contents: Foreword / by Sonia Boyce Introduction / by Joy Gregory Addressing absence and invisibility / Joy Gregory & Gilane Tawadros in conversation Portfolio: Claudette Holmes & Roshini Kempadoo The nature of photography: Black notes from the underground (1989) / by Maud Sulter Together: community and activism Journeying: home and distant places Kinship and family ties Portraits: likeness and representation Exploring process and materiality Planes of imagination Autoportrait: 'authentic' selves Beyond the frame: photography with other media Embodied experience: bodies and sexuality On assignment.…

Añadir al carritoEmerson's novels have undergone a re-evaluation in recent years. The first six were republished by Quartet Books as 'Rediscovered Classics' in 2017, and in 2021 by Quadrant Books. 'Books and Bookmen' was one of a stable of seven London arts magazines owned by Philip Dosse (1925-1980) of Hansom Books. Emerson, who was the editor of the magazine at the time of Dosse's suicide, has published an account of her time there: 'Death of a Bookman', Standpoint, October 2018. The present three items date from an earlier period, when Emerson was working as an assistant in the interim period between school and college. The three items are in good condition, lightly aged and folded for postage, and all signed 'Sally C. Emerson'. ONE: ALS, 22 January [1975]. 2pp, landscape 12mo. She gives a list of four books, with full and half price, which she has kept for herself, and asks to be paid for reviews, minus the total. She discusses the 'system of my receiving and returning the books', which she feels works well. She is finding the writing of reviews 'less difficult to do, but must admit I'd find it a strain to do more than two pages a month'. The letter carries calculations by Dosse. TWO: TLS, 11 May 1975. 1p, 4to. 'I quite understand about having to cut b&b it's a wonder it's remained so fat for so long in these lean times. I was of course disappointed to hear of the exodus of books noticed but not heartbroken because it was an enormous amount of work to do on top of a full-time job. Now perhaps I shall have the time to do an occasional interview for b & b as well as reviews.' After discussing a move 'to a flat in Canonbury' and a reference to 'Tony' she writes: 'I have very much enjoyed doing books noticed. It's taught me much about reviewing as well as educating me in a motley collection of subjects.' THREE: TLS, 21 August 1975. 1p, 4to. She is writing, at the instigation of 'Cis', regarding money owed for reviews, and discusses this matter, including an autograph note on books 'from the plain children's book reviews'. 'I see Bron Waugh is advertising b&b as ardently as ever in his diary in Private Eye with every justification for b&b is plump with interest if not with pages.' She ends with the news that she is 'still working at The Illustrated London News, and enjoying it, but Hansom books has only to beckon. . .'.…

Añadir al carritoCondición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Offered here is an original autograph postcard from the acclaimed English playwright, author, actor and screenwriter, Alan Bennett. It is offered together with his book The Writer in Disguise, in which the postcard was found. Alan Bennett Autograph Postcard - Background Note Original handwritten and signed postcard from Alan Bennett to Revd Michael Burgess, postmarked London NW, 14 February 1989, addressed to: Revd Michael Burgess, St Deiniol's Library, Hawarden, Clwyd. Message reads: "Your note much appreciated. No ideas at all for a second series - Have just finished on the South Bank at the NT. The picture overleaf could be from here, now. Alan Bennett." The reference to "NT" clearly indicates the National Theatre on London's South Bank, where Bennett was actively working at the time. The mention of "no ideas at all for a second series" very likely refers to Bennett's hugely successful Talking Heads, first broadcast in 1988, making this an appealing contemporary association with one of his best-known television works. The recipient is almost certainly Michael Burgess (1939-2010), then associated with St Deiniol's Library (now Gladstone's Library) at Hawarden, and later Bishop of Chester. Burgess had a direct literary connection to Bennett, later publishing Lifting Heaven: The Fiction of Alan Bennett (1999), a full-length critical study of Bennett's work, making this a particularly attractive association between author and commentator. The postcard itself is additionally appealing for being written on a Labour Party "Workless" exhibition postcard, which Bennett wryly references in his note: "The picture overleaf could be from here, now." This dry political humour is characteristically Bennett. The book accompanying the postcard is The Writer in Disguise by Alan Bennett - a first edition Faber and Faber paperback, published in London in 1985. In very good condition. Soundly bound. A couple of small marks to front cover. Text is clean with some age-toning to extremities. Text in English. 256pp. Dimensions: approx 197mm high x 125mm wide x 15mm deep. Weight: approximately 234g (unpacked). Signed by Author(s). …
