Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Len Lye, the artist and film-maker, wrote this colourful account of his early years in New Zealand. It covers his most intense experiences during the first two-dozen years of his life, including his childhood years at the Cape Campbell lighthouse, his passion for drawing, his exploration of sex, and his discovery of modern art. Lye documented his experiences in crisp, rhythmic sentences, full of sensations and feelings, described by the poet Alistair Reid as "beautifully transparent and heart-stopping."Happy Moments is the remarkable life story of a street-wise young man who grew up in severe poverty but had the energy and vision to become a highly creative artist. Lye's text is accompanied by many of his unique drawings, or "doodles" as he called them, and also by personal photographs. Happy Moments is a lively, down-to-earth record of early experiences and a rich introduction to Lye's original approach to art. Her mother's family moved in the upper echelons of Auckland society until they lost their fortune in the Great Depression, while her working-class father was a direct descendant of a Chickasaw Native American sentenced to penal time in Australia. In the tension-filled house in rural New Zealand, prey to the advances of adult men and oppressed by the conservative Presbyterian church of her upbringing, Jenny fought to make sense of her surroundings and follow her passion for art.Venus Has No Arms, God Has No Clothes is a moving and detailed portrait of the childhood of a prolific New Zealand artist, evoking the conservatism of the era she grew up in and the obstacles she had to battle to realise her vocation. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Pill-Rolling Fingers is a series of poems by Marsden-funded researcher Tara Coleman. It brings together personal poems from her own experience of early-onset Parkinson's and research poems crafted from the stories of 48 other New Zealanders living with the condition. It expresses what it is like to be diagnosed with and to live with Parkinson's - the sense of isolation a person can feel as they face changes to friendships, jobs, and the opportunities to participate in social occasions. It also captures the moments of humour, intimacy, and joy that are experienced despite, and sometimes because of, the challenges of chronic illness. With honesty, the collection speaks to the complexity of living with an often-misrepresented progressive illness. It celebrates the creativity and resilience of those with Parkinson's and invites all readers - whether familiar with the condition or not - to listen more closely, and more compassionately. This book tells the story of the Redoubt, and the buildup of military power along the Waikato border, which led directly to the most significant campaign of the New Zealand Wars, the invasion of the Waikato'--Back cover. Heavy; DJ. 314 pages.…
