In the aftermath of September 11, statesman, laymen and scholars and would be researchers have struggled to explain and understand why Muslims would be willing to participate in jihad. Is there some form of logic behind the decision? To what extent does rational instrumentalism determine the variation in the level of willingness to participate? Can socioeconomic status indicators tell us something about the profiles of the jihad participants and its prospective doers? Does identity politics have any significant bearing on the Muslims' level of participation? Based on empirical survey on Islamic religiosity in Indonesia and Iran, this study sets out to examine these pertinent issues. It delves into the various dimensions of religiosity, while explaining to what extent and how religious affection affects Muslim participation in jihad. "Indonesia, no doubt, is a multi-religious country. Despite centuries of peaceful co-existence among the faithful, Indonesia in the late 1990s and early 2000s was rocked by supposedly religious conflicts in such places as Ambon, Maluku, and Poso, Central Sulawesi. In retrospect of the conflicts that had been settled peacefully, this book is an initial attempt to explore some models of religious dialogues based on framework of Gadamer and Knitter. The work is undoubtedly a significant contribution to the conceptual and practical strengthening of religious dialogues in order for Indonesia to be able to prevent religious conflict in the future (Azyumardi Azra, Professor of History; Director, Graduate School, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University, Jakarta, Indonesia; member of Council on Faith, World Economic Forum, Davos)." Any shortcomings of Barth's view of the relationship between God and creation should not obscure the fact that the Church Dogmatics establishes the doctrine of the Trinity as central to the church's theological agenda. Dr. Watson proposes that the Trinity, as a basic hermeneutical key, needs to be understood as expressing the language and the structure of the church's liturgical experience. In this context, the relationship between God and creation takes into full account both God's free condescension as Creator and Reconciler and the created integrity of the creature. The Eastern Church's Trinitarian vision clarifies and resolves the theological inadequacies of Barth's presentation. No other religion professes its faith with the image of a capital punishment. It was a gruesome form of torture and death in the ancient Roman Empire, and yet women and men wear this symbol on chains around their necks, on commitment rings or badges; they sign themselves with a Cross before prayers and even sports people are seen making this sign before an event. In his years of teaching and writing, Tony Kelly has continuously explored they 'why' of this symbol. Apart from the historical, political reasons that led to Jesus' death in this brutal way, why this form of death; where was God on Golgotha; what was the purpose or meaning of this death; could it have been avoided? These are just some of the questions raised on the cross of Jesus. Such questions were first asked by Jesus' friends and followers who seem to have had such high expectation of him. But these 'had hopes' (Lk 24:21) were shattered on Golgotha. The shock of his death was compounded by the further shock of his return to them - they named their experience as resurrection - a word only associated with the 'last days'. Death was one thing. Resurrection compounded the questions. As Jews, these friends and followers puzzled their experience in the light of their Jewish scriptures and traditions. First Paul, then the Gospel writers, and then John, the visionary, mined their scriptures and theology to find ways to communicate the inexpressible. From the Foreword by Mary Coloe, PBVM Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

It is no surprise then to find a wide range of theological reflection upon the human body, from those that affirm the human body as something very good, through to other more negative views where the body is something to be marginalised or escaped from. The body and theology also meet in conversations over body, mind and soul; gender; disability; eschatology; race and culture; sexuality; Christology; and medicine and technology to name but a few. Each of the authors in this volume pick up the theme of embodiment as the lens through which they look at an aspect of theology and body, providing an engaging window onto some of these discussions. They arrived in the mining towns of Boksburg, Brakpan and Springs. Coming from a different milieu in England, they found it difficult to fit in. They chose not to get involved with the racial and social animosities, the labour unrest and even the socio-economic factors that led eventually to an apartheid government. Instead they focused on the task of building up parishes. The social situation they encountered led to frustration. Personal relationships between them deteriorated and most of the first group returned overseas unhappy or ill. It was only after 1925 with the arrival of more friars, that the work of building not just churches, but of living communities of priest and people, could begin. It was due to the persistence of two men, Bede Jarrett and Lawrence Shapcote, that the mission survived at all. This is a reprint of the 2017 book and is the first in a newly established Southern African Dominican Series published in the ATF Africa imprint of ATF Press Publishing Group. The book includes a Foreword by the Vice-Provincial of the Dominican Friars of Southern Africa in 2017, Stanslaus Muyebe OP Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

I resonate with that comment. In this work Norm takes us into the realms of the scholar and scientist God and invites us to explore the laws and ways of Wisdom that are inherent in the cosmos, nature, and all living creatures We are challenged to discern the way of all things; and, like all worth-while learning, that task is not easy as any decent student will know. But as Norm leads us into the way of Norm who has written this work, he like Wisdom takes us beyond the science itself and beckons us into the realms of the spiritual and divine which permeate everything, and suddenly we feel ourselves touched to our centre by the mystery and wonder of that which is beyond us, and yet deeply within. "I am located, therefore I am." -- Dr Mary Graham (Kombumerri person)Context is profoundly significant for shaping our understanding of God and what it means to be human. In this volume three scholars from South Australia explore the gifts of and challenges to theologies shaped by their locations. In "Reimagining God and the Church in Australia through an Adnyamathanha Lens", Rev Dr Aunty Denise Champion from the Flinders Ranges argues for attending to ancient wisdom gifted by ancestors in Country as our primary resource for understanding the new thing that is Christ. She explores some of her peoples experiences of, and the ongoing implications therefore for, church and Christology in this place. 'Jesus Walking on Aboriginal Countries', by Dr Labhaoise Upton, a Catholic woman, charts the surprising wisdom she encountered listening to Elders along the Dingo Songline as she took up Pope John Paul IIs 1986 charge to joyfully receive the contribution to the Church of Aboriginal peoples. It has been banished from most modern universities and relegated to the fringe of intellectual life in many societies. But the secular humanism that sought to provide a replacement unifying narrative has failed to satisfy the yearnings of the human heart. The recent resurgence of interest in spirituality is fundamentally a quest for the numinous, the transcendent and the divine. This collection of essays was produced to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the opening of St Mark's National Theological Centre in Canberra. Written by systematic theologians, biblical scholars, pastoral carers and church historians, they demonstrate that God can be encountered readily in everyday life. These essays showcase the abilities of a diverse range of Australian Christian thinkers and the depth of the contributions they can make to popular understanding of human identity and destiny. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This is a collection of articles that focus on the broad theme of Ethics and Religion in Public and Political Life. The articles are diverse reflections on this theme, and in some cases present rather differing views which, when placed next to one another provide the ingredients for good ethical debate and dare I say itthe possibility of progress in ethical thinking. I trust that readers will relish in the quality of the authors who have contributed to this issue and the contributions they have made.Leading the issue is John Milbank's remarkable piece entitled Theologising Brexit, in which he puts forward an argument for interpreting one of 2016s most surprising events in theological terms, and proceeds to do this, extending on previous work published in ABC Religion and Ethics Online. Next, Thandeka and Darcia Narvaez draw together Thandekas own Contemporary Affect Theology and Narvaezs theory of moral development and reasoning to propose an argument for the effectiveness of certain religious dispositions in prompting healing from destructive tendencies, including with a special focus on race. Their article is entitled Neurobiology, Emotions and Faith: From White Self-Destruction to Healing through Contemporary Affect Theology. Sturla Sagbergs article takes the lead of its name from Samuel Becketts famous quote, oft-cited by Cornel West, 'Try Again, Fail Again, Fail Better: An Essay on the Moral Power of Religious Language in Contemporary Society. Sagbergs argument is that religious language, and the worldviews underpinning it, have enduring relevance in public discourse in a manner that is qualitatively different to the kind of discourse offered without a religious basis. Derek Sankeys article Religion and Values in a World that is Coming of Age takes a different position, extending on Bonhoeffers comment that the world has come of age to posit an argument for a different kind of relationship between religion and ethics, one which sees historically contextualised theologies and religious interests de-coupled from contemporary ethical debates with a view to establishing a sense of sacredness which he sees as far better placed to underpin ethical discussion today. Nicholas Aroneys article is the last in the main section of this issue and also draws from previous work in ABC Religion and Ethics Online. Faith in Public Office: The Meaning, Persistence and Importance of Oaths is an extensive reflection on the topic of the journal, tracing the specifically religious history of oaths and analysing what this means for our understanding of this practice today, particularly when it comes to our having faith in public office. This issue also sees a new section added to the journal. In my own doctoral thesis, I claimed that the worth of the work (which focused on theological and philosophical ethics) was closely tied to its capacity for application. Ethics is ultimately an applied discipline and, whilst academic discussions surrounding it are eminently interesting and important, at some point the rubber has to hit the road. As such, in each issue I will attempt to include a contribution from practitioners those involved in the practice of ethics in one way or another. The contribution for this issue comes from Neil and Jane Hawkes, and focuses on their extensive study of values education and work in implementing it in the UK.I would like to thank all of the authors for their contributions to this issue. As ever with starting something new, there have been some unexpected delays and mistakes along the way, and each has shown great patience throughout this process. I would also like to thank the editorial board for their wisdom and efforts in bringing this work together. Edited by Daniel J Fleming Ethics: Contemporary Perspectives Vol 4/2017. The Colonial God: YHWHProgressive Revelation of the Character of YHWH in the Book of Exodus Volume Three in the De-colonising the Biblical Narrative Series is dedicated to those First Nations Australia peoples who were encouraged by colonists, especially the early missionaries, to believe in the Lord God.Early settlers were unaware that the term 'Lord' is not a title for God in the Bible. It is the name of the colonial God YHWH.This volume reflects the de-colonising approach developed by Anne Pattel-Gray, Norman Habel, and other First Nations Australia. including Ken Sumner, Denise Champion, Rose Rigney and Sean Weeta. In recent times many First Nations theologians and others have begun to comprehend what some have designated as the 'colonial curse' as a factor that has persisted in various forms since the arrival of the first Europeans. The 'colonial curse' refers to all negative effects of the colonial invasion of Australia: everything from stealing the Land to poisoning waters and massacres of men, women and children. This book outlines four stages in the evolution of a 'colonial consciousness' in an awareness of what the 'colonial curse' has meant for First Nations Australia. Anyone reading the Abraham narratives of Genesis 12-25 who dares to identify with the worldview of First nations Australia - interpreters, First Nations Australia leaders, empathetic readers with de-colonised minds - will expect and discern three colonial factors influencing previous readings and interpretations of the narrative: language, interpreters, and narrators.A de-colonising hermeneutic is not only to become aware of past colonial translations of the narrative, but also to focus on the specific colonial dimensions of the narrative itself-reflected in the language, the idioms, the content or the theology of the narrative. The goal: to use this process of deep listening to discern and 'untangle' the precolonial narrative. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

The Clergy Club as the title suggests, looks at the disconnection that exists between the clergy and the laity in the Catholic Church, and the "club" mentality on the part of the Church hierarchy that underpins it. Many examples are cited that reveal an attitude among priests and bishops of elitism and aloofness, as well as the clergy's inability to see the world from the perspective of the laity, even with the best of intentions. Many questions are asked, such as "Where does this "club" attitude come from? How does it express itself? How is it reinforced by Church structures and theology? What was Jesus' approach to both clergy and laity? Why is Pope Francis so vehement in his criticism of clericalism? Some practical initiatives are also suggested as a way of bringing about change in the clerical culture, a change that would help to rid the Church of clericalism, and in the process bring the clergy and laity closer together.John Crothers was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Sydney in 1985 and has worked in numerous Sydney parishes including Penshurst and Peakhurst, where he was Parish Priest from 2000 to 2016. John is now retired from full-time parish ministry and lives on the NSW south coast, helping out with Sunday masses and other sacramental celebrations both in the Sydney and Wollongong dioceses."This book is equally important for Catholic laity and clergy. Crothers argues that the future lies in clergy and laity collaborating in shaping the future of the church with mutual respect, dialogue and deep listening. Clericalism continues to separate the clergy and laity as it denies the problem, closes off discussion and refuses to dialogue and learn with the whole people of God. Crothers offers many examples of this problem and a marvellous section on how the gospel can inform us on what is wrong, and how we can move forward to a better future. Written in an easy style, it is challenging for all who seek to look honestly at what is happening today in the Catholic church."(Peter Maher, Sydney priest and editor of The Swag, The National Council of Priests quarterly magazine)"Just like John's homilies, this book is engaging, challenging and affirming. Every thinking Catholic - laity and clergy - should read it."(Sarah Minns, Co-author of Kath's Miracle and parishioner of St Declan's Penshurst)The best quote I've ever heard about John Crothers came from a fellow parishioner who was in his late 90's when he said Fr John was put on this earth to be my Parish Priest. A thought shared by many and the ultimate compliment.(Kevin Greene, Mayor of Georges River Council)When John Crothers gives a homily the congregation are engaged. In this thought provoking book he has managed to address a series of complex issues in an easy to read format that will not only strike a cord with the laity but hopefully make the "Clergy Club" listen.(Kevin Greene, Mayor of Georges River Council) Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Within its boundaries, there is an incomparable diversity of cultures, socio-economic standards and political structures. And all the world's major religions-Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Christianity-have their origins in Asia. Little wonder that religion is always involved in the flash points that occur across the region. Religious freedom and religious persecution knows no boundaries and are alive and well in all their complexions from Korea in the north to Indonesia in the south, from the Philippines in the east to Pakistan in the west. And UCAN has reporters and analysts across Asia's full extent. We have brought our unique network to the task of examining and the evaluating the prospects for religious freedom and the causes of religious persecution in Asia. As rational beings, we humans actualize our highest capacity when we make choices. For that exercise we need freedom. At the heart of all freedoms-political, economic and cultural especially-is the freedom to believe. Religious freedom is the fundamental freedom. Belief and its restriction attack the heart of freedom. But the circumstances and conditions of religious freedom and the persecution of believers vary greatly across the continent. The range and reach of those circumstances and conditions across Asia are what this volume offers. Asia as a continent accounts for half the world's population. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This book proposes a methodology for the conception of Jesus by a human mother and a divine father. The method makes use of scientific genetic processes which operate in the conception of any human being, but with a divine contribution. Various currently held theories of methods by which Jesus appeared on earth are shown to lack evidence. Arising from this method, Jesus sonship from God is proposed to have been literal and not metaphorical as is suggested by current theology. Therefore, Jesus is presented in this writing as the literal son of God, being both human and divine. As such, he was the unique and suitable offering to God to make atonement for the obvious wrong-doing of human beings. If this methodology is correct, the way a trinity of divine persons may be perceived is suggested. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

They reach their clearest expression and celebration for the Church's life in the Eucharist-the 'source and summit of the Church's life' as Vatican 2 puts it. Father William J Grimm is a Maryknoll Missioner of 40 years experience in Asia-mostly Japan, but Hong Kong and Cambodia as well. In that time he has come to deepen his understanding of the distinctiveness of the message and person of Jesus Christ even in circumstances and among people that Jesus could never have known or imagined. It is not enough to understand what the readings mean as those who composed them intended us to grasp. The critical thing is to find what that meaning might be in the context of our times and contexts. Speaking the Word in our time and for our places is the challenge of preaching and it is to that challenge that Fr Grimm devotes his learning, experience and imagination. Every week for the Church's three year liturgical cycle, Fr Grimm gives visitors to -UCAN-the benefit of his learning, prayer, wisdom and experience. Each week, his homilies for Sundays and special feasts are seen by some 3,000 visitors to the main UCAN site and with subtitles on UCAN's Vietnamese and Chinese sites. Now the text of those homilies is published not only to assist preachers in the preparation of their homilies but for anyone wanting to deepen their under- standing of the text and find material for fruitful prayer on the Sunday readings.
