Drawing upon historical accounts and the surviving documentary record, Barry reconstructs the circumstances surrounding the Armada's attempted invasion of England under Philip II of Spain, its encounters with the English fleet, and the subsequent decision to return to Spain by sailing north around Scotland and south along the western coast of Ireland. Severe Atlantic weather, navigational difficulties and the condition of the Spanish vessels contributed to the destruction of numerous ships, with substantial losses of life among their crews and soldiers. Particular attention is given to the wrecks along the Irish coast, the experiences of Spanish survivors, and their encounters with the local Irish population and the English authorities governing Ireland during the Elizabethan period. The narrative places these events within the wider circumstances of Anglo-Spanish rivalry, the Tudor conquest of Ireland and the political and religious divisions of late sixteenth-century Europe. The book also considers the geographical distribution of the wrecks and the subsequent historical interest in identifying their locations, including the contribution of maritime archaeology and underwater investigations to understanding the Armada's fate.
