Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. For fifteen centuries, were two of the most important women in the Gospel story mistaken for one another?Mary Magdalene and Mary of Bethany have stood at the centre of Christian tradition for almost two thousand years. Yet their identities, their actions and even their reputations became entangled in ways that profoundly shaped how generations understood them.In 1922, Scottish author A. W. Kerr took up that question in a remarkable little book carrying an extraordinary accusation: Wronged for Fifteen Centuries.Kerr believed that Mary Magdalene and Mary of Bethany had been wrongly identified with one another, and that centuries of interpretation had obscured the distinct women preserved in the Gospel accounts. Drawing closely upon Scripture, Christian tradition and historical argument, he set out to separate their stories and challenge an identification deeply embedded in Western Christianity. But there is another remarkable story behind The Two Marys.Published quietly in Edinburgh in 1922, Kerr's small book appears to have left surprisingly little visible trace in Britain. Yet hundreds of miles away, in Catholic Poland, his argument was being read, cited and debated. By 1925, the Polish Catholic priest and biblical scholar Wladyslaw Hozakowski was engaging directly with Kerr. He reviewed The Two Marys in a theological journal.Hozakowski did not simply accept Kerr's conclusions - he challenged some and credited others. But that is precisely what makes the evidence so compelling. Kerr's little English book had crossed borders and languages and entered serious Catholic theological debate within only a few years of appearing. Why did a book that attracted such attention abroad become so difficult to find at home? And then, for more than a century, The Two Marys largely disappeared from view. Now Ancestral Living Press returns A. W. Kerr's complete work to print in this Restored 1922 Edition. This is not a modern rewriting of Kerr's argument. His text has been newly transcribed and carefully prepared from the original publication, preserving his language, quotations, references, dedication and characteristic use of capitalisation. The wording of Kerr's notes has not been altered; only the footnote numbering has been regularised to accommodate modern print and digital formats. At the heart of the book remains the question Kerr posed more than one hundred years ago: Who were the two Marys? Was Mary Magdalene the woman later tradition made her? Was Mary of Bethany someone entirely distinct? How did the Gospel accounts of anointing become entangled? And how could an identification challenged by the evidence endure for century after century?Kerr approaches those questions with the confidence of a writer convinced that an old historical wrong could still be corrected. For readers interested in Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany, the women of the Gospels, biblical history, early Christianity and the development of Christian tradition, The Two Marys offers something increasingly rare: a forgotten voice from the early twentieth century, preserved in its own words and allowed once again to make its case.A forgotten 1922 investigation. An argument that crossed Europe. Two women whose identities became intertwined. One challenge to fifteen centuries of tradition. The Two Marys is A. W. Kerr's remarkable attempt to set them apart a Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Four pages are missing from the centre of the Gospel of Mary. They disappear at the most tantalising moment in the surviving text. Mary is recounting a private revelation given to her by the Saviour. She asks how a vision is perceived. His answer turns on the nous, the mind between soul and spirit, and then the manuscript breaks off in mid-sentence.Four pages later, the Gospel returns with the soul already ascending through the Powers. For more than a century, everything between those two points has been silent. But the silence is no longer empty. In 2023, the Greek Christian papyrus P.Oxy. 5577 was formally published. It preserves a teaching addressed directly to Mary: water, fire and spirit; flesh and incorruptible light; intertwined elements and their dissolution; the good Father; and a striking reference to Mind manifested in flesh. The Missing Pages shows how this fragment belongs within the lost section of Mary's Gospel.Duncan Smart follows the evidence from the manuscript itself. The surviving Berlin Codex fixes both boundaries of the four-page loss. P.Oxy. 5577 supplies ancient material that fits the conceptual movement required between them. The Gospel constrains the passage from vision and nous to transformation, liberation and the ascent of the soul. Related early Christian traditions, including Pistis Sophia, preserve the same wider pattern: Mary as visionary, questioner, interpreter and the woman who understands. The investigation begins with the extraordinary modern history of Berlin Codex 8502: its appearance in Cairo in 1896, the scholars who struggled to publish it, a destroyed print run, two world wars, forgotten scholarship and the long delay before the Gospel of Mary became widely available. From there, the trail leads through the Greek witnesses to the Gospel, the publication of P.Oxy. 5577, the work of Sarah Parkhouse and Elizabeth Schrader Polczer, and the textual, theological and codicological evidence that places the fragment within the missing centre of Mary's revelation. At every stage, the argument is tested against what actually survives. Similarity alone is not enough. The fragment is measured against the physical boundaries of the lacuna, the order of its surviving sides, the Gospel's theology of dissolution and restoration, the sequence of the Powers and the wider early Christian memory of Mary. The book culminates in a continuous recovered English reading of BG 11-14-the four missing pages-followed by a clear evidential chain showing what is physically preserved, what modern scholarship has established and where reconstruction is required. The recovery is disciplined by the evidence. Where ancient wording survives, it governs the reading. Where the Berlin Codex fixes the narrative boundaries, those boundaries govern it. Connective language is supplied only where the physical loss requires it.What begins with Mary's question about vision develops into a revelation about mind, flesh, transformation, incorruptible light and the soul's freedom from the Powers. At its centre stands Mary Magdalene: witness, visionary, interpreter and bearer of a revelation that has been silent for more than a century. For readers of early Christianity, Mary Magdalene, lost gospels, ancient manuscripts and the history of ideas, The Missing Pages is both an investigation and a recovery: a demonstration of how scattered evidence can restore meaning to one of the most compelling absences in early Christian literature. The pages remain lost. The silence between them does n Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
