Under the British Raj the Khasi and Jaintia Hills was divided into two parts Khasi and Jaintia Hills District and Khasi states. The Khasi states one of the Indian states that acceded to the dominion of India are not parts of British India. Insofar as the administration of justice is concerned the administration for the Khasi and Jaintia Hills district was governed by the rules of the administration of justice and police prescribed by the Governor. The administration of justice in Khasi Hills for a long time was carried on according to customary law. Insurgency in Northeast India is expected to be useful to all those who are involved in the peace processes in Northeast India because a problem of its magnitude cannot be solved without understanding the root causes. The book brings into focus that there is nothing like a north eastern insurgency and that there are several autonomous or isolated insurgencies militancies and other movements in different parts and ethnic areas of the region which have created an atmosphere of turmoil or an insurgent situation for the entire region. The roots of the problem vary from secessionism to demands for state or sub state within India or regional autonomy for ethnic areas within the states or protection of ethnic areas within the states or protection of ethnic and cultural identities. The economic and infrastructural backwardness unemployment and lack of opportunities seemed to be common causes in almost all cases. The single common cause that is emphasized most is the indifferent attitude of the central government which failed tackle the problem of insurgency at its initial stage and allowed the dominant majority to threaten the cultural identity of the ethnic and linguistic minorities and is responsible for economic and infrastructural backwardness of the region unemployment and lack of opportunities frustration and disappointment of the youths a sense of deprivation in the masses ethnic discrimination insecurity and threatened identity among the minorities and many other related problems. The study recommends that each insurgency or militancy or movement should be taken up separately and its root causes identified to uproot those and to dawn peace in the region. 136 pp.

Fifty years ago in October 1956 the mighty Soviet Union invaded Hungary to crush a massive anti Soviet rebellion that rocked Budapest. Twelve years later Moscow repeated the same coercive and surgical measure in another country in Eastern Europe Czechoslovakia a member of Warsaw Treaty Organization living in the Soviet sphere of influence. This book is a full scale assessment based on original documents and secondary source materials of the US response to the two invasions to determine the efficacy of its policy of liberation of Eastern Europe. A great power despite its pronounced policy of waging a psychological warfare against its powerful adversary proved to be too weak to respond to the need of the hour to stall the Soviet invasions and to translate its policy of liberation into a reality when the opportune moment had appeared. It seeks to establish that tall but vague and false election promises during the 1952 Presidential election acted as an inducement to unarmed populace of Hungary to revolt against a mighty power that crushed the rebellion while the United States remained a silent spectator from a safe distance. Industrialization urbanization equation can hardly explain the growth of the urban spaces in most of the developing regions of the world in general and the underdeveloped areas within them in particular. The process of urbanization in such cases can best be explained in terms of social political and demographic forces rather than the forces of economics. Contributions in this volume have made an attempt to understand the nature of growth of the urban areas in relatively underdeveloped north eastern region of India where urban spaces being grafted primarily due to the spread of the administrative centers are devoid of any strong economic raison d'etre and hence informal sector has become the predominant source of urban livelihood. Women's Rights in India A Feminist Perspective is a… philosophically argued feminist critique on the rights of women in India. The book argues that while the Indian woman of the Vedic times was not an absolutely liberated woman she still enjoyed considerable freedom dignity and opportunities. Unfortunately in the later times woman's position in India progressively deteriorated and when the British came to rule the country she was considered to be a weak and frail creature who lived in the shadow of her husband and who had no identity except as the faithful enduring meek wife of a man. The author looks at this progressive deterioration of woman's status in India as a deliberate male agenda drawn from the socio political arrangement of patriarchy which used culture and religion as its finest ploy to subjugate women. This feminist perspective is not complete without showing the path ahead. The author argues the preferential treatment of women and protective discrimination in order to bridge the gap created by centuries of systematic inequality and for a rights based approach to the problem of women's equality in India besides pleading for a radical change in mindset both of men and women about women's rights and the protection of these rights through carefully planned laws and their enforcement through a functionally accessible and equitable judicial system. 204 pp.
