"The Space Shuttle was a partially reusable human spaceflight vehicle capable of reaching low Earth orbit, commissioned and operated by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from 1981 to 2011. It resulted from shuttle design studies conducted by NASA and the US Air Force in the 1960s and was first proposed for development as part of an ambitious second-generation Space Transportation System (STS) of space vehicles to follow the Apollo program in a September 1969 report of a Space Task Group headed by Vice President Spiro Agnew to President Richard Nixon. Nixon's post-Apollo NASA budgeting withdrew support of all system components except the Shuttle, to which NASA applied the STS name. The vehicle consisted of a spaceplane for orbit and re-entry, fueled by expendable liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen tanks, with reusable strap-on solid booster rockets. Aerofax Inc.'s Datagraph format was one of three aircraft monographic history series produced by the company to meet the needs of the aviation enthusiast. These works were created to accommodate aircraft histories and related subject areas were were either too large for the smaller minigraph series or too small for the larger, definitive Aerograph series. Each work reference have been created for the enthusiast and profession and was designed to provide unparalleled textual and pictorial detail not usually found in other works. Jenkins worked as a contractor to NASA for 33 years, mostly on the Space Shuttle Program in engineering and management roles. The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is an American long-range, subsonic, jet-powered strategic bomber. The B-52 was designed and built by Boeing, which has continued to provide support and upgrades. It has been operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) since the 1950s, and NASA for over 40 years. The bomber can carry up to 70,000 pounds of weapons, and has a typical combat range of around 8,800 miles without aerial refueling. Beginning with the successful contract bid in June 1946, the B-52 design evolved from a straight wing aircraft powered by six turboprop engines to the final prototype YB-52 with eight turbojet engines and swept wings. The B-52 took its maiden flight in April 1952. The B-52 has been in service with the USAF since 1955, and NASA from 1959 to 2007. Superior performance at high subsonic speeds and relatively low operating costs have kept them in service despite more advanced strategic bombers. The B-52 has dropped only conventional munitions in combat.
