In 1975 he was recruited, with other firemen, by the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve to implement pollution control in the Port of New York as a result of the Federal 1973 Clean Water Act. This entailed the inspection of oil storage facilities and tank ships to prevent sloppy transfer of oil. In 1951 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served one year in Korea, receiving the Combat Infantry Badge with two Battle Stars for Action on "Pork Chop Hill" and "Old Baldy". - from the rear outer cover.
