The First Fagin: The True Story of Ikey Solomon is a compelling docudrama and book that reexamines the life of Isaac "Ikey" Solomon, a notorious 19th-century criminal who is widely believed to have inspired the character of Fagin in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. About the Story: Origin: Based on Judith Sackville-O'Donnell's 2002 book The First Fagin: The True Story of Ikey Solomon. Narrative Arc: It traces Solomon's journey from petty thievery in London to his dramatic escapes, eventual exile in New York, and reunion with his family in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). Themes: Crime, punishment, family loyalty, injustice, and the harsh realities of 19th-century penal systems. Characters & Portrayal. Ikey Solomon: Depicted not as a grotesque villain, but as a devoted husband and father who turned to fencing (dealing in stolen goods) to support his family. Ann Solomon: His wife, portrayed as stoic and loyal, enduring harsh treatment after being wrongfully convicted and transported to Tasmania. Film Adaptation Highlights: Title: The First Fagin. Directors: Alan Rosenthal & Helen Gaynor. Cast: Ryk Goddard as Ikey Solomon, Carrie McLean as Ann Solomon. Narration: Miriam Margolyes. Style: A mix of dramatic reenactments, historical commentary, and visual art. Message: Challenges Dickens' antisemitic portrayal of Fagin, offering a more nuanced and humanized view of Solomon. Historical Significance: Dickens Connection: Scholars argue Dickens borrowed heavily from Solomon's life for Fagin, though the literary portrayal is far more sinister and stereotyped. Cultural Impact: The story has been retold in various forms, including Bryce Courtenay's The Potato Factory, but The First Fagin aims to reclaim Solomon's legacy from caricature and prejudice.
